Russian attacks kill five in Zaporizhzhia, injure several in Kharkiv, regional officials say

Russian shelling and air attacks killed five people outside the southeastern Ukraine city of Zaporizhzhia, while a drone attack on the northeast region of Sumy injured at least six early on Monday (June 2, 2025), including two children, regional officials said. Ivan Fedorov, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said three women died in a series of Russian shelling incidents targeting the village of Ternuvate, east of Zaporizhzhia late on Sunday (June 1, 2025). A shop and several homes were badly damaged. A man died in a nearby district in a Russian strike by a guided aerial bomb, Mr. Fedorov said. A total of nine people were injured in the Russian attacks and a private home was destroyed. Two children were among those injured in a Russian drone attack on the Sumy region, Oleh Sinehubov, the Governor of the region, said on Monday (June 2, 2025) on Telegram. "A 7-year-old boy is among the victims," Mr. Sinehubov said. He added that several buildings throughout the regions were damaged. The attacks come as both Russia and Ukraine are about to meet for a round of peace talks, trying to find a way to end the war that Russia launched with a full-scale invasion on its smaller neighbour more than three years ago.

Ukraine destroys 40 aircraft deep inside Russia ahead of peace talks in Istanbul

KYIV: A Ukrainian drone attack has destroyed more than 40 Russian planes deep in Russia's territory, Ukraine's Security Service said on Sunday, while Moscow pounded Ukraine with missiles and drones just hours before a new round of direct peace talks in Istanbul. A military official, who spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to disclose operational details, said the far-reaching attack took more than a year and a half to execute and was personally supervised by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In his evening address, Zelenskyy said that 117 drones had been used in the operation. He claimed the operation had been headquartered out of an office next to the local FSB headquarters. The FSB is the Russian intelligence and security service. The military source said it was an "extremely complex" operation, involving the smuggling of first-person view, or FPV, drones to Russia, where they were then placed in mobile wooden houses. "Later, drones were hidden under the roofs of these houses while already placed on trucks. At the right moment, the roofs of the houses were remotely opened, and the drones flew to hit Russian bombers," the source said.

Russia Says Shot Down 162 Ukrainian Drones Overnight

Last Updated: Russia intercepted 162 Ukrainian drones overnight, hours before Kyiv and Moscow were to start a second round of talks in Turkey. A day after Kyiv said it launched a massive aerial attack on Moscow, 162 drones were intercepted by Russia overnight, the Russian health ministry said on Monday. The tensions escalated a day before both the sides were expected to sit for direct talks to de-escalate the conflict which has entered into its third year. 'Air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 162 Ukrainian drones" between 1710 GMT and 2300 GMT on Sunday, news agency AFP quoted the Russia's health ministry's statement. The Ukrainian and Russian delegations were to restart the talks in Turkey's capital city Istanbul. This would be the second round of direct talks between the two neighbouring nations since the weeks after Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022. The statement mentioned that majority of the drones were brought down over regions bordering Ukraine, with 57 intercepted over the Kursk region and 31 over the Belgorod region. Earlier on Sunday, Kyiv said it carried out one of its most brazen and successful attacks on Russian soil, targetting dozens of strategic bombers parked at airbases deep inside Russia, thousands of kilometres behind the frontline.
