This World Bicycle Day, Ludhiana's bicycle industry pedals for global upgrades

Time of India2 days ago

Ludhiana: As World Bicycle Day is observed today, Ludhianvis take pride in their city's legacy as a pioneer and leader in the bicycle industry in India. However, this pride is tempered by the stark reality that the industry is struggling to make a mark on the international stage.
Despite its dominance in the domestic market, Ludhiana's bicycle industry lags behind in exports, particularly in Western and developed countries.
The growing dominance of China in the global bicycle market has only widened the gap, exposing the limitations of local manufacturers in meeting international quality standards and advanced design expectations.
Industry representatives believe that govt intervention is now crucial to help the sector evolve and compete globally.
The president of the United Cycle Parts Manufacturers Association (UCPMA), Harsimran Singh Lucky, said: "It is time the central and state govts step in and facilitate collaboration between major players like Hero and Avon, along with industry bodies like UCPMA, to form a dedicated organisation for advanced R&D. This would enable the creation and implementation of sophisticated designs demanded by developed markets.
"
A big market is waiting to be tapped, where China has gradually made inroads, he said, adding: "China exports 23 crore bicycles world over including West, whereas India exports about 75-80 lakh bicycles. You can see the huge difference. China's bicycle products sell for $250 whereas India goods are sold for only a fifth of the price. The gap is due to China's superior quality of the bicycles," he said.
In Europe, there are 1.4 bicycles per person and they seek quality, safety and comfort, but the export market mostly for India is Bangladesh, African countries, and a few others, he said.
The govt must facilitate formation of bicycle bodies to spearhead R&D, ease investment in this area, involve big players like Hero, Avon and TI to bring technology to India, innovate and excel and help democratise the technology to tap the international market, especially the European and other first-world countries.
The govt must also regulate the pricing of steel and raw material, Lucky added.
Despite being the manufacturing hub, Ludhiana is devoid of dedicated bicycle tracks.
"Infrastructure for riding bicycles must be developed in all cities," he said.
The govt, municipalities, and corporations must ensure the development of dedicated bicycle tracks in every city and town. Despite a growing willingness among people to adopt cycling for daily commuting, safety concerns continue to be a major deterrent.
Even factory workers in the last decade have gradually shifted to two-wheelers from bicycles, he added.
"It is being claimed that tracks have been created in Ladhowal, however, there is only for leisure. We need dedicated bicycle tracks for commuting as well," Raman, a resident said.
On the other hand, cycling not only helps reduce pollution but also promotes fitness, health, and overall well-being. This, in turn, contributes to economic growth by reducing the burden of illness, healthcare costs, loss of productivity, and income. It ultimately benefits both the community and the nation as a whole, said Amandeep, a cyclist.

Microsoft is offering European governments this service for free

Microsoft is offering a free cybersecurity program to European governments to enhance their defences against cyber threats. The program, which was launched recently, includes safety against cyberattacks that are amplified by artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative comes after a recent increase in cyberattacks across Europe, many of which have been linked to state-sponsored actors from countries such as China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia. The program's objective is to boost intelligence-sharing specifically concerning AI-based threats. It also aims to help these countries with the prevention and disruption of these attacks. In an interview with the news agency Reuters, Microsoft President Brad Smith revealed how the company is planning to offer its services to these European governments to safeguard against cyberattacks. What Microsoft President Brad Smith said about this cybersecurity project In the Reuters interview, Smith said: 'If we can bring more to Europe of what we have developed in the United States, that will strengthen cybersecurity protection for more European institutions. You're going to see other things we are doing later in the month.' He noted that attackers are increasingly using generative AI to expand the scale and impact of their operations, from disrupting critical infrastructure to spreading disinformation. However, Smith added that while AI has been weaponised by malicious actors, it also offers valuable defensive capabilities. Our goal needs to be to keep AI advancing as a defensive tool faster than it advances as an offensive weapon,' he highlighted. Smith continued, saying audio has, so far, been easier to fake than video. He also confirmed that Microsoft monitors the use of its AI models for any malicious activity and restricts access to known cybercriminals. Notable examples of AI-driven deepfakes include a 2022 video falsely showing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy surrendering to Russia, and a fake audio clip in 2023 that influenced the Slovakian election. Israel arms exports hit all time high in 2024: ministry

Israel's defence ministry said Wednesday that its arms exports hit an all-time high of more than $14.7 billion in 2024, with a sharp rise in deals with Arab Gulf states, despite international criticism of Israel's ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza. "Israel again reached an all-time peak in defence exports in 2024, marking the fourth consecutive record-breaking year in the scope of defence agreements," the ministry, which oversees and approves the exports of Israel's defence industries, said in a statement. A majority -- 56.8 percent -- of the deals signed were "mega-deals" valued at at least $100 million each, the ministry said, adding that "operational achievements" in the Gaza war had driven the demand. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Knee pain prices might surprise you Knee pain | search ads Find Now Undo Since the outbreak of the war, sparked by militant group Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023, the ministry said it had been operating on "emergency mode, mobilising for the war effort with round-the-clock IDF production while maintaining foreign client manufacturing." "The war's operational achievements and the proven battlefield performance of Israeli systems have driven strong international demand for Israeli defense technology, concluding 2024 on a remarkably high note with record-breaking export deals," it said. Live Events The ministry said that demand for its missiles, rockets, and air defence systems had "reached a new significant milestone" and accounted for some 48 percent of the total number of exports, up from 36 percent in 2023. Additionally, "satellite and space systems exports saw substantial growth, representing 8 percent of deals in 2024 compared to 2 percent in 2023," the ministry said. A breakdown of the regions to which the arms were exported showed that European countries made up more than half. Sales to countries considered part of the Abraham Accords -- the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco who signed groundbreaking normalisation agreements with Israel in 2020 -- appeared to have sharply risen from 3 percent in 2023 to 12 percent. "Precisely during a difficult and complex year of war, Israel has broken an all-time record in defence exports," Defence Minister Israel Katz said in the statement. "The world sees Israeli strength and seeks to be a partner in it," he added.

Hyderabad cardiologist gets US patent for multi-functional cardiac occluder

File photo: Dr Nageswara Rao Koneti HYDERABAD: An innovative device that can fix various types of cardiac defects, designed by Hyderabad-based Dr Nageswara Rao Koneti, who heads the Cardiology Division at Rainbow Children's Heart Institute, has been granted a US patent. Called KONAR-MF Occluder, the multi-functional device can close septal defects in children and adults. It is a double umbrella disc device made of nitinol, a biocompatible nickel and titanium alloy, and is stretchable up to 15 mm. It can treat various conditions, including ventricular septal defects, coronary arteriovenous fistulas, and paravalvular leaks. The device has already been patented in India, Europe (European Commission), Euro-African countries, and South Korea. The multifunctional device not only fixes multiple types of cardiac lesions but also makes advanced cardiac care more affordable for patients in India, as it costs just Rs 50,000 in India compared to Rs 1.2 lakh in Pakistan and Rs 2.5–6 lakhs in other parts of Asia and Europe, said Dr Koneti. Terming this as a proud moment for Indian science, Dr Koneti said: "This US patent validates that innovations from India can meet global standards. It took us over six years to develop the device, and we applied for CE approval in 2018.' He said the US patent now paves the way for a US FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) approval for the device, which has already been implanted in about 10-15 patients in the US on compassionate grounds. "But we can also do clinical trials in the US if required," said Dr Koneti, who is a paediatric interventional cardiologist. He pointed out that the device has already demonstrated its safety and efficacy through over 20 peer-reviewed studies, and over 10,000 of these devices have already been implanted in patients in over 90 countries across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Africa since the device got CE approval in 2018. The device is manufactured by LifeTech Scientific of China. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . AI Masterclass for Students.
