During his visit to the town of Dahra in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL Sector West Commander Brigadier General Nicola Mandolesi affirmed "UNIFIL's full support for the local population," emphasizing "strong and ongoing coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces, which continues to carry out mine clearance operations in the area, a prerequisite for the safe return of civilians."
The situation is more stable than a few months ago, but it's still fragile. @UNIFIL_ peacekeepers remain committed to peace and stability in south Lebanon and continue supporting conditions for a political solution. — Aroldo Lázaro (@aroldo_lazaro) May 5, 2025
He added, "We continue to urge the Israeli army to fully withdraw from Lebanese territory, as its presence north of the Blue Line constitutes a violation of Resolution 1701."
Mandolesi further mentioned, "At the same time, our coordination with the Lebanese army remains strong, and we continue to support the army in deploying its forces to help restore security and stability and work with the government to re-establish state authority in the south."

Egypt to start training 5,000 Palestinian officers for postwar Gaza

Ammon News - Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Wednesday that lists had been finalised for about 5,000 Palestinian officers to begin training in the country to help fill the security vacuum in a postwar Gaza Strip. Mr Abdelatty told local broadcaster DMC TV that Egypt was working with Jordan to prepare Palestinian police to manage and administer the war-ravaged enclave after Israel's war. Cairo will host an international conference for Gaza's reconstruction, during which Egypt's vision for administering the strip will be announced, he said. Despite no major breakthrough in ceasefire talks, there has been increasing speculation on postwar Gaza, with different plans and names circulated in Arab and Israeli media. Mr Abdelatty said an agreement had been reached on 15 prominent figures from Gaza to administer the enclave in the first six months. The Palestinian Authority was the only legitimate body to do so, he added. The broader plan for Gaza, adopted by the Arab League during a summit in Cairo in March, is for Hamas to step aside and a technocratic committee to take over for six months. Samir Hulileh, a US nominee to lead postwar-Gaza, told The National that the civilian transitional rule could last up to a year. 'This is a transitional phase which might last for six months or a year and it's not going to be long,' he said. Conditions for Mr Hulileh to implement his rule include a comprehensive ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces. The matter, currently being discussed in Egypt in co-operation with Qatar and the US, is being complicated by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterating plans to reoccupy the enclave and 'allow' Palestinians to leave. On Monday, Mr Netanyahu announced that the strip would be governed by a 'non-Israeli civilian administration' following the occupation of Gaza city.

'Israeli' reservist, served in Gaza found dead in apparent suicide

Captain Yosef Haim Ashraf, a 28-year-old Israeli Occupation Forces commando unit reservist, was found dead Thursday in Switzerland Forest near Tiberias in an apparent suicide, local media reported. The IOF Military Police believes he took his own life by detonating a grenade. Ashraf had recently served with the 99th Division in the Gaza Strip and was part of a newly formed unit involved in recent military operations. The IOF said the Military Police Investigation unit has opened an inquiry into the circumstances of his death. According to official IOF data, suicides among soldiers on active duty, both regular and reservists, have increased since the start of the war. From October 7, 2023, to the end of that year, seven soldiers committed suicide, and in 2024, 21 soldiers took their own lives. This year, 18 soldiers on active duty have died by suicide, including Ashraf, marking the 17th confirmed case within the IOF this year. The 'Israeli' army has continued its operations in Gaza since October 2023, amid international calls for a ceasefire. The conflict has resulted in over 61,700 Palestinian deaths, described by some as the second year of genocide in the enclave.

'Israeli' army allegedly seals 7 km Hamas tunnel in northern Gaza

The 'Israeli' army said Friday its forces had allegedly sealed a 7-kilometer underground tunnel used by Hamas in northern Gaza. In a statement posted on its website, the army said the operation in the Beit Hanoun area involved pumping more than 20,000 cubic meters of insulating materials through the tunnel's path. Hamas, which has controlled Gaza since 2006, is reported to have built an extensive underground network across the coastal enclave, which is just 45 kilometers long and between 6 and 14 kilometers wide. The total length of the tunnels was believed to be at least 500 kilometers before the outbreak of the current war.
