With the threat of global warming increasing, research around greenhouse gases (GHG) and in particular methane, is becoming increasingly important.
According to Sharon Huws, professor in animal science and microbiology at Queens University Belfast there are 'huge gaps' in ruminant bacteria available for methane emission research.
Speaking at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine's (DAFM) Agriculture and Climate conference this week at Dublin Castle, Huws highlighted the challenges associated with the 'complexity' of the ruminant microbiome.
Huws said: 'The rumen is one of the most complex microbiomes that you will find in nature.
'And with this complexity brings quite a lot of challenges, but ultimately what we're trying to do with our methane mitigation strategies is manipulate the processes in the rumen.
'If we do not have these microbes available, it means that we cannot understand them.'

Reducing methane emissions
Huws told Agriland how the Rumen Gateway Project, taking place at Queen's University Belfast, aims to 'fill in' the understanding around how methane is produced.
She detailed that the purpose of the project is to gather methane-producing bacteria from ruminant animals across the world and combat them with methane mitigation strategies.
Huws also added that 'practical' solutions can be implemented on farms such as introducing multi-species swards and willows to reduce methane emissions.
Feed additives such as Bovaer are now gaining interest among farmers, with Huws emphasising that 'we [researchers] would never put anything on farms unless we know it does not affect animal health and welfare and that the products produced won't affect human health'.
'Those are the number one things, ensuring that farmers and the general public have confidence in what we're [researchers] doing'.
Huws also highlighted that the acceleration of research on methane vaccines will require a team effort by immunologists and microbiologists.
'I think probably, three or four years down the line we'll hear a lot more about methane vaccines,' Huws added.

DAFM: First round of AMS notifications due later this month

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has confirmed that the first round of Area Monitoring System (AMS) notifications will be sent to farmers later this month. The AMS is the observation and assessment of agricultural activities and practices on agricultural areas. The system uses Copernicus Sentinel satellite data which is gathered automatically every five days and stored to provide up-to-date information as required. AMS Under the current Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the AMS is mandatory across all EU member states to monitor compliance with farm scheme criteria. The AMS interprets satellite imagery to provide decisions on agricultural activity on all declared land parcels of which there are approximately 1.1 million in Ireland. The department is monitoring all area-based schemes with data gathered by the system. DAFM spokesperson told Agriland:'The first round of AMS notifications will focus on the presence of potential artificial surfaces and will issue end of June with a deadline for receipt of responses of July 8, 2025.' 'The second round of notifications will issue mid-July and will notify on potential non-compliance detected for incorrect crops, potential ineligible areas, and no evidence of agricultural activity. 'The third round of notifications will issue mid-August and will notify on potential non-compliance detected for incorrect crops, potential ineligible areas, no evidence of agricultural activity and no evidence of ACRES winter bird food. 'The deadline for receipt of completed responses for both rounds 2 and 3 will be 2nd September 2025,' the spokesperson added. DAFM issued over 5,800 notifications to landowners this year due to potential scheme issues being detected through the AMS.

Climate scientists gather in Dublin to discuss agriculture

Climate scientists are attending the meeting of the Council of the Global Research Alliance for Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) which opened today, Tuesday June 3, 2025, at Dublin Castle. The GRA brings together climate scientists from across the world to enhance collaboration and progress climate research in agriculture. Ireland, through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), officially assumed the chair of the GRA from January 1, 2025, for a period of 18 months. This is the first time that Ireland has chaired the GRA since joining in 2009. Climate scientists Established in 2009, the GRA aims to provide a framework for voluntary action to increase international cooperation and investment in research activities for mitigating agricultural GHG and improving carbon sequestration, as well as improving the measurement of emissions in different agricultural systems. The GRA also helps scientists to gain expertise in mitigation through developing new partnerships and exchanges. A total of 68 countries and 29 partners are now members. The council meeting in Dublin sees delegates from a large number of these countries and partners in attendance. Over the course of the two-day meeting, they will consider among other things, a new Strategic Plan to 2030, as well as hearing updates from the activities of the four research groups. These groups are: livestock; croplands; paddy rice; and integrative cross cutting areas. They will also consider proposals for new flagship projects in areas such as the biological nitrification inhibition of pasture swards to reduce nitrous oxide emissions. They will additionally consider the outcomes of completed flagship projects such as the 'Feed Additives' project that has developed practical tools, protocols and guidelines for the testing and implementation of feed additives. The council meeting will be chaired by officials from DAFM. Many of the delegates will attend the 'Agriculture and Climate Change: Science into Action' conference also taking place in Dublin Castle on Thursday (June 5). They will also visit Teagasc Grange Research Centre and a farm on Friday (June 6), to see first-hand the research taking place on agricultural GHGs in Ireland and how the outputs of this research are being implemented on an Irish farm. Along with Ireland as the chair, the GRA special representative, who is the ambassador for the GRA, is Dr. Harry Clark, chief scientist of the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre. Prof. Tommy Boland, University College Dublin (UCD) School of Agriculture and Food Science, is a co-chair of the livestock research group (one of four research groups) of the GRA.
