Atlanta Dream off to hot start under new coach Karl Smesko and play of Allisha Gray

NBC Sports3 hours ago

NEW YORK — The Atlanta Dream made a lot of moves in the offseason, hiring Karl Smesko from Florida Gulf Coast and bringing in Brittney Griner and Brionna Jones to complement Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray.
So far the moves have paid off as the Dream have the third best record in the league behind Minnesota and New York. Atlanta (8-3) is off to one of the franchise's best marks through 11 games since coming into the league as an expansion team in 2008. The 2016 team also won eight of its first 11 games but then went on to drop its next six games.
Gray has flourished in Smesko's system, shooting a career-high 51% from the field including 42% from behind the 3-point line. She earned the league's Eastern Conference Player of the Month for May.
'I think it's the offense and just finding my shots,' Gray said. 'I feel like Karl puts in an offense and the way he pays attention to the details and really helps me. Tells me if I'm open shoot the ball. Instills that confidence in me, that's been a big part of my success.'
Griner came to the team as a free agent after spending the first 11 seasons with Phoenix after the Mercury drafted her No. 1 in 2013. With so much talent around her she doesn't feel like she has to shoulder the load every night for the Dream to win. In a 33-point victory over Washington, she took just four shots. The game before, a rout of Chicago, the 6-foot-8 star took only three shot attempts.
'Before you know if I only took three shots in the game it's a loss. Here you look up and we're beating a team by 25,' she said at practice. 'It just takes so much pressure off of me.'
Power poll rankings
New York and Minnesota both suffered their first losses of the season and the Lynx passed the Liberty for the top spot in the poll. Atlanta moved up to third with Phoenix and Seattle the next two. Indiana was sixth with Golden State behind them. Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Washington were next. Chicago, Connecticut and Dallas rounded out the poll.
Paint the line orange
The WNBA launched a new initiative aiming to bring the women's professional game closer to communities by painting the official WNBA 3-point line on park basketball courts across the country. It was debuted in New York at a park in Brooklyn.
'I'm excited about what this initiative means in terms of access and representation,' said WNBA Head of League Operations Bethany Donaphin, who grew up in New York. 'I think it's just further evidence of the way that we want to be able to connect with young girls who are inspired by the WNBA.'
Player of the week
Gray earned Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. The Dream wing averaged 23.3 points, six rebounds and 4.3 assists to help the team go 3-0 on the week. Other players receiving consideration were Napheesa Collier of Minnesota, Sabrina Ionescu of New York, Caitlin Clark of Indiana and Satou Sabally of Phoenix.
Game of the week
Indiana at Las Vegas. With Clark back in the lineup, the Fever continue a western trip in Las Vegas. It's unclear if A'ja Wilson will be back for the game as the Aces' star is in concussion protocol.

Team USA coach Cheryl Reeve's Caitlin Clark posts were ‘stunningly bad behavior': author

Christine Brennan seemingly has a bone to pick with Cheryl Reeve. The USA Today columnist and author ripped the coach of Team USA and the WNBA's Lynx for her 'stunningly bad behavior' heading into the selection process for the 2024 Paris Olympics — specifically her treatment of then-Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark. 'How on earth is that OK with the US Olympic and Paralympic community and the USA basketball team that its coach is actively tweeting and going on social media about someone who is in the selection pool?' Brennan asked on 'The Adam Gold Show' on Monday. Advertisement 3 USA Today sports columnist Christine Brennan asks a question during an IOC press conference. Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports Brennan, on the show to discuss her new book, 'On Her Game,' which examines Clark and her impact on women's sports, referenced Reeve's May 2024 post on X, which seemed to take a shot at the WNBA putting Clark on TV as a rookie while other teams didn't get nearly the same treatment. 'ALSO in action tonight – @minnesotalynx vs @chicagosky. 7 pm CST,' Reeve wrote, 'Though fans won't be able to watch, #Lynx fans can go to the Lynx app to follow along via play by play.' Advertisement Reeve's missive was hard to miss. 'Just stunningly bad behavior by Cheryl Reeve, tweeting at and about Caitlin Clark, kind of blaming her for not having Minnesota Lynx games on TV, but only Caitlin games on TV,' Brennan said. A month later, when the 12-woman Team USA roster was revealed, Clark was not on it and Reeve was at the center of questions regarding the selection process. Advertisement The coach stated at the time that she did not have a role in the selection process and selection committee chair Jen Rizzotti explained the decision came down to basketball criteria. The goal was to create the best team and not weigh in the extra viewers Clark would bring. 'When you base your decision on criteria, there were other players that were harder to cut because they checked a lot more boxes,' Rizzoitti told the AP last summer. 'Then sometimes it comes down to position, style of play for [coach] Cheryl [Reeve] and then sometimes a vote.' 3 Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve looks on against the Connecticut Sun. Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images Advertisement Brennan tried asking Reeve about her omission of Clark at the time, but she would not respond. Brennan herself is now without controversy, either. During the WNBA playoffs last year, Clark was hit in the eye by the Suns' DiJonai Carrington. As the incident gained national attention, Brennan asked if Carrington had intentionally hit her — which swiftly drew the ire of the WNBA players union, which sought to ban her.

The Los Angeles Sparks host the Seattle Storm tonight as each team looks to cement themselves in the WNBA playoff race. The Sparks started off their season a dreadful 2-6, but have since won two of their following four games, including a victory over the 5-5 Las Vegas Aces, sitting just ahead of them in the Western Conference standings. That alone is enough to prove the Sparks could put up a solid fight against the 6-5 Storm. However, the Sparks do have one glaring disadvantage. This time, they are playing at home. Advertisement The Sparks are an abysmal 1-5 when playing at Arena in Los Angeles, with a net rating of -5.2 when playing at home, the fourth-worst mark in the WNBA. The Storm, meanwhile, are just two games removed from handing the Minnesota Lynx their first and only loss of the season. Sure, they may have dropped a game to the Golden State Valkyries immediately after, but a win over Minnesota proves that they can hang with the best of the best. So, are we going to see that version of the Storm tonight, or will we see the version that was trailing by 13 at the end of the first half against Golden State? Here's how to watch tonight's Storm vs. Sparks contest. MILESTONE: Angel Reese records first triple-double of career What time is Seattle Storm vs. Los Angeles Sparks?
