Connections: Sports Edition is out of beta now, making its debut on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 9. That's a sign that the game has earned enough loyal players that The Athletic, the subscription-based sports journalism site owned by the Times, will continue to publish it. It doesn't show up in the NYT Games app but now appears in The Athletic's own app. Or you can continue to play it free online.

Police shut down Cluely's party, the ‘cheat at everything' startup
The latest San Francisco startup culture drama happened on Monday night. And it centered around 'the most legendary party that never happened,' Cluely founder and CEO Roy Lee tells TechCrunch. Cluely had hoped to throw an after-party for a Y Combinator event occurring on Monday and Tuesday called AI Startup School. The event drew crowds thanks to scheduled speakers like Sam Altman, Satya Nadella, and Elon Musk. Cluely is an AI startup born of controversy and rage-bait comedy marketing. True to form, Lee posted a satirical video on X advertising his after-party. It shows him camped out by the famed Y Combinator sign — the one all the YC founders take selfies with. (Cluely is not a YC startup.) The tweet advertised the party to his more than 100,000 followers and said to DM for an invite. Lee tells TechCrunch that he didn't actually send invites out to the hordes. 'We only invited friends and friends of friends,' he said. But it became the party, and people shared the details. When it was set to begin, so many people were standing outside the venue that the lines wrapped around blocks. 'It just blew up way out of proportion,' Lee says. What looked like 2,000 people showed up, he added. A party that big might have gotten out of control, but it didn't get the chance. The lines were blocking traffic, so the cops showed up and shut it down. 'Cluely's aura is just too strong!' Lee was heard shouting outside as the cops busted it up. 'It would have been the most legendary party in tech history. And I would argue that the reputation of this story might just make it the most legendary party that never happened,' Lee tells TechCrunch, simultaneously proud and bummed. Lee became known in San Francisco when he posted a viral tweet on X saying he was suspended by Columbia University after he and his co-founder developed an AI tool to cheat on job interviews for software engineers. They turned that tool into a startup that offers a hidden in-browser window that can't be viewed by an interviewer or proctor. The startup also went viral for its marketing that promised to help people 'cheat on everything.' In April, Cluely raised a $5.3 million seed round, and its marketing is now a little less in-your-face: 'Everything you need. Before you ask.' The party and its demise by law enforcement naturally became the subject of jokes, memes, and inventive rumors. Lee's explanation of the crowds outside is perhaps more dull than what some people imagined. After the cops showed, 'We did some cleanup, but the drinks are all there waiting for the next party,' he promises. As a franchise steeped in continuity, there's an uneasy feeling whenever a Pittsburgh Steelers stalwart puts that status in doubt. Advertisement Ahead of the 2024 season, it was defensive tackle Cameron Heyward's turn to test the waters. Coming off an injury-plagued season, Heyward was in search of a new deal that ensured he'd be paid handsomely to spend the twilight of his career in Western Pennsylvania. At first, the Steelers didn't budge. Ultimately, a deal got done, and Heyward put forth an incredible bounce-back season, logging eight sacks on the way to All-Pro honors. A year later, edge rusher T.J. Watt is due for an extension. Cleveland Browns superstar Myles Garrett's recent four-year, $160 million deal has raised the stakes, and Watt is holding out in hopes of approaching (if not surpassing) that number. Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger gave an update on Watt's contract negotiations now that he held himself out of minicamp. Advertisement "It's interesting because this is now a mandatory minicamp," Roethlisberger said. "So he can be fined. It'll be interesting to see if the Steelers decide to fine him or not because they don't have to ... Last time this happened was four years ago when T.J. was looking for a new contract. The difference is, he's holding out, which means he is not there. Last time, he held in, which means, 'I'm going to come, I'll be here, but I'm not participating.'" Like Heyward, Watt is coming to the table after an underwhelming year with some level of concerns attached to his age. Heyward, well into his 30s with two sacks in 2023, managed to come to an agreement. Watt still posted 11.5 sacks in 2024 and is only entering his age-31 season. Watt would like to be the highest-paid defensive player in football. Pittsburgh, presumably on the hook for ~$20 million more than it anticipated entering the offseason, is understandably taking its time. "This year, he's not there," Roethlisberger said. "You asked the question of what's the difference? I don't know, only T.J. knows the difference. My only speculation and guess is like, they must not be close. If you were close, I would think that T.J. would do what he did last time." Advertisement For now, the two seem far apart. But the Steelers are incentivized to keep Watt around, and his run defense should keep him among the best edge rushers in the sport, even if his pass-rushing decline proves to be more than a blip on the radar. Until then, the Pittsburgh faithful will continue to hold their breath, hoping that gap is addressed before his absence becomes meaningful. But on it, he's an upgrade over Mason Rudolph, and his teammates know it. Advertisement Rodgers' peers, understudies, and coaches have expressed excitement about his arrival. He makes them more potent in January (with a better chance of getting there) and adds Hall of Fame pedigree to a quarterback room that badly needs a steady hand. He's said all the right things, given the organization a glimpse at practice, and seems to have the respect of his teammates. Just as important as those relationships will be the ones he forges with the coaching staff, namely head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. So far, so good. Tomlin welcomed Rodgers to the Steelers with the help of Archibald's BBQ, who the coach hired to cater the team-wide event at his home. 'Woodrow Washington, the owner of Archibald's BBQ and Archibald and Woodrow's, developed a relationship with coaches for the Pittsburgh Steelers,' Kelvin Reynolds wrote for WBRC. 'Washington says Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin hired him to come to Pittsburgh and cook for his assistants for a special event. Advertisement 'He shared pictures of him and his staff posing for pictures with Tomlin and some Steeler coaches. Quarterback Aaron Rogers, who just signed with the Steelers, also took pictures with the guys from Woodrow's.' Both throughout his elongated journey through free agency and after he put pen to paper, Rodgers has been enthusiastic about the opportunity to play under Tomlin. He's been adamant in how much he respects the head coach. Tomlin, as one of the most well-respected players' coaches in the league, has the reputation and the resume to earn the Canton-bound quarterback's admiration. 'It's just humbling knowing people think highly of your food and the taste that you bring and ask you come,' Washington told Reynolds. 'And I know my grandparents, George and Betty, my mom, Paulette, and George, they workerd their butt off, years and years and years and years. And I know they're happy to know that we're stretching out a little further than Northport and Tuscaloosa.'
