Host committee blames Tourism Calgary for loss of 2027 Indigenous Games

CTV News2 days ago
The Calgary host committee for the North American Indigenous Games is speaking out after the right to host the games in 2027 was taken waway.
It's blaming Tourism Calgary, in part, for the failure.
Last week, the games' council announced it was retracting Calgary's hosting rights, saying critical benchmarks were not met.
The celebration of sport and culture was supposed to bring 5,000 athletes from across the continent to Calgary.
Today, the local host society issued a statement, saying it faced shifting requirements and unreasonable demands.
It said Tourism Calgary withheld operational funding from the City of Calgary, leaving the society without needed resources.
The society called the actions a step backward for reconciliation in sport and culture.
Tourism Calgary said the society did not meet key milestones and conditions, but wouldn't give any specifics -- and a spokesperson for the host committee, CEO Lowa Beebe, told CTV News they wouldn't give them any specifics either.
The society says it's moving on and will rebrand, to try to organize another type of sporting event for Indigenous youth in Calgary.

Westlake Corporation Advances Sustainability Goals Toward 2030 Carbon-Reduction Target

Westlake Corporation (NYSE: WLK) today announced an advance in the company's sustainability objectives to further reduce its carbon emissions intensity by 20% by 2030, from a 2016 baseline, which is one of the company's sustainability goals. Westlake recently entered into an agreement with a solar renewable-energy three-farm project that generates approximately 160,000 megawatt-hours per year of renewable energy and purchased the associated renewable energy certificates (RECs). The RECs are utilized as part of this multi-year purchase agreement to offset Westlake's electricity consumption attributed to powering its operations. Westlake is evaluating the best use of REC's to enhance its downstream product offerings. 'The incorporation of purchased RECs into our broader sustainability strategy is an important step in our ongoing efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions,' said Tim Hunt, Vice President, Corporate Development and Sustainability. 'This initiative not only advances our own sustainability objectives but also supports our customers' goals of decreasing emissions across their value chains while helping to drive the growth of renewable energy.' About Westlake Westlake Corporation is a global manufacturer and supplier of materials and innovative products that enhance life every day. Headquartered in Houston, with operations in Asia, Europe and North America, we provide the building blocks for vital solutions — from housing and construction, to packaging and healthcare, to automotive and consumer. Voters head to the polls in Battle River—Crowfoot as Poilievre seeks return to House

A campaign sign for independent candidate Bonnie Critchley next to signs for Pierre Poilievre and Darcy Spady in the riding of Battle River-Crowfoot in Camrose, Alta., on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Amber Bracken CAMROSE — Voters head to the polls today in a rural Alberta byelection that's getting an unusual level of national attention. Battle River—Crowfoot was left vacant when Conservative Damien Kurek stepped down shortly after the spring election to make way for his party's leader, Pierre Poilievre, to run for a seat. Poilievre lost in the April election after being elected in the Ottawa-area riding of Carleton seven straight times. The byelection is in one of the safest Conservative seats in the country, and the Tory leader is widely expected to win by a large margin. More than 200 people are running against Poilievre, most of whom are part of a protest movement called the Longest Ballot Committee. As a result of the record number of people in the running, Elections Canada says voters will need to write in the name of their preferred candidate on a modified ballot. Polls will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. MT. Elections Canada says it expects the vote count will take longer than usual, given the unique blank ballot. More than 14,000 people already cast a vote in advance polls. There are more than 86,000 eligible voters in the riding. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 18, 2025.
