NCC cadets gets disaster relief & military training
The camp brought together 592 NCC cadets for an overview of military training, camp life, physical training, firing and obstacle course training.
Selected cadets were also incorporated into Disaster Relief Management Training conducted by representatives of the District Disaster Management Authority as part of the Yuva Aapda Mitra Cadre.
Cadets were also exposed to 'Riot Control Drills' and experienced a live firing demonstration of stun and smoke grenades conducted on June 5 by the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner's office at Nakre Firing Range.
The CATC was conducted under the aegis of NCC Group Headquarters Mangaluru, and Colonel Viraj Kamath, group commander, Mangalore Group, interacted with the NCC cadets and oversaw the training.
Addressing the cadets on the first day of the CATC, Col Kamath said NCC offers good learning opportunities at an early age and NCC cadets should make good use of it. He called upon cadets to hone their skills during the camps and training programme.
He said discipline and moral courage are the two gifts that NCC offers to the cadets. Further guiding the NCC cadets, he told them to get the NCC 'C' certificate so they can directly go for the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview.

NCC cadets to undertake fresh expedition soon, peaks shortlisted: DG
New Delhi, Aug 17 (PTI) A newly constituted NCC expedition team consisting of 20 cadets, is set to embark on a mountaineering adventure post monsoon when they will attempt to scale a peak in northern India, the Corps' director general said. Two peaks have been shortlisted by the NCC — Mt Yunam (6,111 m) in Himachal Pradesh and Mt Shalang Dhura (5,678 m) in Uttarakhand. 'One of the two peaks will be selected based on weather conditions. The team has equal number of male and females cadets, and the planned mission is in line with promoting a spirit of adventure among the youth," DG of NCC, Lieutenant General Gurbirpal Singh told PTI. Both are basic or beginners' peak, he said. The National Cadet Corps (NCC), the largest uniformed youth organisation in the world, was raised in 1948. Earlier in May this year, an expedition team of the NCC summited Mt Everest — the world's highest peak. 'We are now looking for the next expedition. We are still to decide on a peak, but it will be either Mt Yunam located in Lahaul in Himachal Pradesh or Mt Shalang Dhura, located in Uttarakhand," Singh said. An NCC team has earlier scaled Mt Yunam but, it will be the 'first attempt" by cadets to summit Mt Shalang Dhura, he added. This will be a post-monsoon expedition, so depending on rainfall and other weather conditions, it is likely to begin around either end-September or October, he added. The NCC DG said the Corps has already put together a team for this upcoming expedition. Around fifteen days ago, nearly 150 cadets had come to Delhi after being shortlisted by their respective directorates, and from that pool, the 20 cadets were finalised, he said. The NCC has 17 directorates spread across the country, with a total sanctioned strength of 20 lakh. It has two divisions — Junior Division and Senior Division. After they join, in the first year of Senior Division, the caders are made to train at various training academies as part of different courses, and mountaineering is also part of their training. After selection for a mountaineering expedition, they get trained for 7-10 days in Uttarkashi generally, but due to natural disaster there recently, 'we are trying to do this at another place in Uttarakhand", the DG said. Lieutenant General Singh expressed pride that 2,000 NCC cadets along with 500 My Bharat volunteers were part of the team that sat in front of the Red Fort ramparts here during the 79th Independence Day celebrations, in a formation of the 'Naya Bharat' logo. The NCC DG also attended the celebrations at Red Fort on August 15, where the defining spirit was the success of Operation Sindoor — India's decisive four-day military action in May in the wake of Pahalgam attack. '75,000 NCC cadets participated in civil defence and other related activities across the country, during the four-day period when Operation Sindoor was underway," he said. The cadets helped in traffic management and crowd control. As also in hosting blood donation camps, thus contributing to nation-building which they are trained for, the DG said, adding, that they also took part in mock drills that took place around that period. On the upcoming expedition, Lt Gen Singh said, besides the 20 cadets (average age 20-21 years), at least three officers and 10-15 support staff will be part of the team. He said every year, two expeditions are planned, one pre-monsoon and another post-monsoon. For putting together an NCC expedition team for scaling Mt Everest (8,848 m), 'we take 1.5-2 years", the DG added. Mt Everest was first conquered by New Zealand's Edmund Hillary and his sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay in 1953, and has ever since fascinated climbers and mountaineers to scale the famed peak in the mighty Himalayas. NCC cadets in the past, have successfully climbed other peaks too, including Mt Kang Yatse II (6,250 m) and Mt Abi Gamin (7,335 m). Madurai Collector honours freedom fighters on Independence Day
Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar on Friday hoisted the national flag and handed over welfare measures worth ₹42.21 lakh to 42 beneficiaries at the 79th Independence Day celebrations held at the Armed Reserve Police Grounds here. The Collector inspected the guard of honour and took the salute at a parade presented by the police, the fire and rescue services personnel, the home guards and the NCC cadets. Mr. Praveen Kumar honoured freedom fighters and their family members at the event. The Collector also honoured 314 government employees of various departments for their meritorious service. Pulmonologist M. Palaniappan was honoured for his contribution in the field of medicine. A total of 1,021 students from various schools in Madurai district presented cultural performances. Traditional and cultural events were held as part of the Independence Day celebrations. The audience were captivated by the performances of the children. Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Prem Anand Sinha, Madurai City Commissioner of Police J. Loganathan, Superintendent of Police B.K. Arvind, District Revenue Officer K. Anbalagan and other officials were present at the Independence Day celebrations. Earlier, the Collector visited the Gandhi Memorial Museum. He garlanded and paid floral tributes to the Gandhi statue at the Gandhi Memorial Museum.

Freedom fighters honoured and welfare assistance distributed to beneficiaries on Independence Day
RAMANATHAPURAM The 79th Independence Day celebrations were marked by honouring freedom fighters and distribution of benefits to the needy people in Ramanathapuram district on Friday. Unfurling the national flag, District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon took the salute and inspected a guard of honour. He distributed welfare assistance to the tune of ₹84.29 lakh to 80 people on the occasion. He also gave away appreciation certiifcates to 304 personnel from various government departments and public for rendering yeomen services during the year. The I-Day also witnessed a colourful presentation of dance and among other events organised by the government schools and children from the NCC, NSS and other units in schools and colleges. Ramanathapuram Range DIG of Police Pa Moorthy, SP G Chandeesh, District Forest Officer Hemalatha, Additional Collector Divyan Shenegan, District Revenue Officer R Govindarajulu, RDO Raja Manoharan and others participated. Sivaganga Sivaganga Collector K. Porkodi hoisted the national flag and inspected the guard of honour accompanied by SP Shiva Prasad. The Collector gave away benefits to the tune of ₹4.22 lakh to 10 beneficiaries on the occasion and honoured freedom fighters and their legal heirs marking the I-day celebrations. A total of 300 employees from different departments were recognised with an appreciation certificate each for their commendable service. Around 300 children from government and private schools displayed a variety entertainment programme. The Theni district administration presented meritorious certificates to 238 persons from various government departments for their yeomen services during the year. A colorful display of cultural events was presented by over 370 children from schools in the district. The public applauded the participants. Dindigul Dindigul District Collector S Saravanan unfurled the national flag from the district playground campus on Friday amidst applause and releasing of tri-colour balloons on the occasion. The Collector presented appreciation certificates to the government employees and those from the community for meritorious services. The TNSTC managers honoured crew members Eswaran, Satyamurthi and Gopinath for their honesty in handing over the valuables to the rightful owners, who had travelled in the buses. The GM gave away cash awards to the tune of ₹51,500 to 42 children who had successfully passed and scored higher marks in the 10th and plus two exams, a press release said. Virudhunagar Virudhunagar District Collector N. O. Sukhaputhra hoisted the national flag and took the salute from a special vehicle at the 79th Independence Day celebrations in Virudhunagar. The Collector inspected the guard of honour flanked by Superintendent of Police Kannan. The district administration honoured employees for their skills and services which ranged from accident-free driving from the police department, rendering assistance to pilgrims in Saduragiri hills and among others. The Collector presented certificates to 258 personnel on the occasion. District Revenue Officer R. Rajendran, Deputy Director (Megamalai Tiger Reserve) Devaraj, Project Director V.
