Rory McIlroy has long been one of the most dependable names when it comes to Ryder Cup contention. And this week, he finally got what many believed he deserved.
Despite a frustrating U.S. Open run where he had to face consequences for breaking the tee box at Oakmont, McIlroy's season has been anything but dull.
He kicked off 2025 with a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, followed by a dramatic playoff victory at THE PLAYERS Championship, where he edged out none other than J.J. Spaun, who would go on to win the U.S. Open.

But the real breakthrough came at Augusta, where McIlroy ended an 11-year major drought and completed his long-awaited career Grand Slam by winning the Masters.
That win, combined with his consistent form, catapulted him to the top of the European Ryder Cup standings. And on Monday, European captain Luke Donald made it official: Rory McIlroy became the first automatic qualifier for Team Europe at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
McIlroy acknowledged the news with a bold five-word message on Instagram: "I'll see you at Bethpage."

For a player who's been under multiple microscopes lately, it was the kind of validation he needed.
Since the PGA Championship, McIlroy has faced criticism for skipping media duties—something he repeated during the first two days at the U.S. Open.
He also withdrew from the Memorial Tournament, a signature event hosted by Jack Nicklaus, who has mentored McIlroy over the years.
Still, his Ryder Cup legacy remains untarnished. Since debuting in 2010, McIlroy has played in seven consecutive Ryder Cups, helping Europe to five wins.
Now, as he prepares for his eighth straight appearance, McIlroy's message is clear: he's ready to lead again.
"Winning a Ryder Cup away from home is one of the biggest challenges there is in golf," he said.
"We know it's going to be tough in New York, but we're all looking forward to that challenge."
Luke Donald reacts to Rory McIlroy's Ryder Cup achievement
As soon as the news went viral, European team captain, Luke Donald cheered up Rory posting: "Let's go! 👏"
Shane Lowry, who is one of the closest PGA Tour pros to Rory, couldn't stop himself and chimed in, commenting, "😍🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺"
Justin Rose also expressed his love and respect for McIlroy as he took to X posting: "Strong first player in team@RyderCupEurope!!! 💙💛"
A few days ago, Scottie Scheffler was announced as the first lock for the US Ryder Cup team captained by Keegan Bradley.
With Rory and Scottie sitting at OWGR No. 2 and No. 1, respectively, the Ryder Cup storyline is writing itself.
These two have set the tone for the 2025 season, and now they'll carry the weight of national colors at Bethpage Black, arguably one of golf's most intense cauldrons.

Bears' Cole Kmet using own experience to mentor Colston Loveland
The Chicago Bears made a splash in the 2025 NFL draft with the selection of tight end Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick. The selection came as a surprise to some because the Bears already had a talented veteran at the tight end position in Cole Kmet, and there was belief that the team would target a running back early but instead opted for Loveland, who was a target of plenty other teams in the first round. Adding Loveland to the mix is not only an added weapon to Ben Johnson's offense but provides more depth alongside Kmet. The former second-round pick, who has been through plenty of ups and downs in his Bears tenure, is now tasked with mentoring his rookie teammate, although he wasn't asked to do so; it's just happening naturally. Advertisement Kmet recently discussed mentoring Loveland, where he harkened back to his time as a rookie when Jimmy Graham was in that leadership role. "I don't know if I've been asked to like mentor per se. I've still got things that I've got to work on and I've got to achieve," Kmet said. "When I was a rookie, we had Jimmy (Graham) here and Jimmy was like 32 or 33 at the time. I don't know if I should say this publicly –he probably wouldn't have said it then – but he was probably on the back end of his career at that point. I don't necessarily feel like I'm at that stage in my career yet. So, a little different in that regard. "That being said, getting to know Colston has been great so far and I want to give him as much knowledge as I can. Give him all the things that I've learned and get him up to pace as soon and as quickly as possible so that he can go out there and be the best football player that he can be this year and going forward. I'm excited about that and it's been awesome to get to know him here these past few weeks since he's been drafted. I think he's going to fit just fine in our room and in the offense as well." The duo of Kmet and Loveland will give Johnson an opportunity for more 12 personnel, adding another wrinkle to their new offense, but the chemistry between the two will be as equally important. Both tight ends should be considered real pass-catching threats and will make it tough for opposing defenses to pick their poison between the two of them. David Coote was sacked from his job as a Premier League referee in December and was banned by Uefa from the same post a couple of months later. Photograph: Andrew Boyers/Action Images/Reuters Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association in regards to comments he made about Jürgen Klopp. Coote was suspended from his role by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) in November after a video leaked online showing him making foul-mouthed comments about Klopp. The 42-year-old was sacked the following month after a second video, published by the Sun, allegedly showed him sniffing what appeared to be white powder. Advertisement 'David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jürgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1,' read a FA statement. 'It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality. Coote has, however, been cleared of any gambling misconduct following claims he discussed issuing a yellow card to a player before the match in question. Coote denied the allegations, describing them as 'false and defamatory'. Coote was banned by Uefa in February from officiating in European competition until 30 June 2026. The previous month he said struggles with his sexuality contributed to the 'really poor choices' that cost him his job.

Disgraced referee Coote charged by FA over Klopp remarks
Disgraced former Premier League referee David Coote was Tuesday charged by the Football Association over disparaging comments he made about ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. Coote, 42, was sacked in December by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) after a video circulated on social media the previous month of him making derogatory remarks about Klopp and Liverpool in 2020. Advertisement One of those remarks referenced Klopp's German nationality, and the FA said that constituted an alleged "aggravated breach" under its rules. The FA said Coote would face no further action in regard to separate allegations of gambling misconduct, which he had strenuously denied. The FA said those allegations had been fully investigated. A video showing Coote snorting white powder, reportedly during Euro 2024, emerged in November. Earlier this year European football's governing body UEFA banned Coote from any officiating activity until June 2026. In a January interview Coote came out as gay and said his struggle to hide his sexuality had contributed to bad choices. He said he was "truly sorry for any offence caused". jw/lp
