BofA Maintains Hold Rating on Franco-Nevada (FNV) Stock

On May 28, analyst Lawson Winder from Bank of America Securities reiterated a Hold rating on Franco-Nevada Corporation (NYSE:FNV) with a price target of C$266. The reiteration comes after the company acquired a stake in Cote Gold Mine in Canada.

Franco-Nevada Corporation (NYSE:FNV) is a Canadian company focused on gold royalties and streaming. Rather than operating mines or conducting exploration, the company provides financing to mining companies in exchange for royalties or streams.
The company recently acquired a 7.5% gross margin royalty on the Cote Gold mine in Canada for $1.05 billion. Analyst Winder noted that this opportunity offers a royalty on a long mine life, with a modest immediate internal rate of return, considering the current gold prices. However, this step has led Franco-Nevada Corporation's (NYSE:FNV) net asset value to decline by 2% to C$266 per share.
Regardless of the company's diversified portfolio and its long-term exposure to precious metals, it is trading at a premium to its peers in the industry. Winder believes that the company's long-term growth prospects do not justify the premium price despite the potential of its newly acquired stake in Cote Gold Mine, therefore, he reiterated a Hold rating.

Canada will impose new counter-tariffs against U.S. if it can't make a trade deal in 30 days, Mark Carney says

OTTAWA — Canada will impose a new wave of counter-tariffs if it cannot reach a deal within 30 days to resolve the trade dispute with the Trump administration, says Prime Minister Mark Carney. Speaking in Ottawa on the eve of a key meeting tomorrow between the negotiating teams, Carney announced a suite of new countermeasures, including adjusting existing counter tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum products on July 21, at the end of that 30-day period. 'In other words, we're going to adjust them to levels consistent with the progress that's made at that point on the broader trading arrangements with the United States,' he said. Carney also announced a Buy Canadian policy for steel and aluminum used in federal procurement. 'Only Canadian producers and producers from trading partners that provide Canada with tariff free reciprocal access through trade agreements, can compete for federal government procurement of steel and aluminum,' he said. Carney wants an immediate end to the so-called 'border emergency' tariffs and the sectoral tariffs on autos, steel and aluminum that U.S. President Donald Trump has hit Canada with. But he said, 'it's a negotiation,' acknowledging there may not be an immediate lift to all of them. 'There is still some room to travel, so to speak, before we get to that point. But we have a deadline in order to achieve that, and if it's in Canada's interest, we'll sign it,' Carney said. With the move, the Carney government is putting more pressure on Canadian and U.S. negotiators to outline the path to a more predictable trade relationship. Carney also announced new tariffs of 100 per cent on foreign imports of steel from 'non-free trade agreement partners to stabilize the domestic market and prevent harmful trade diversion as the result of the U.S. actions that are destabilizing markets.' He said Trump did not ask him to institute the anti-dumping measure, but it has been a call made by steel producers in Canada. Ottawa also signalled that its digital services tax, which Trump calls an unfair trade practice and wants to eliminate, will apply even as Carney's team is in pitched negotiations to reach a deal. Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne told reporters, 'This was voted by Parliament so we're going ahead with the DST. 'But obviously, you know, all of that is something that we're considering as part of broader discussions that you may have, but the DST is in force and it's going to be applied.' Champagne said he and other G7 finance ministers have discussed different regimes of taxation that affect Big Tech at length with the Americans. 'This is not the big thing. The big thing is all the (value-added taxes) and other type of taxes you have around the world,' he said. 'And we had a discussion at the G7 about a few weeks ago, and even in Washington last time, to explain to our American colleagues that, a lot like the VAT they have in Europe and the GST we have in Canada, is neutral, so that it applies to goods … there's no distinction in terms of imports and exports. So we're going to continue to have these discussion and make our case.' Asked if retaining the digital services tax is a red line for Canada in the current trade dispute with the U.S., Champagne said, 'Listen, the tax is in Canada, the tax applies and will apply.' Carney's surprise scheduling of a news conference Thursday afternoon set back a planned news conference by the Canadian Steel Producers Association and the United Steel Workers, who were set to outline their urgent call for immediate action as the 50 per cent steel tariffs Trump imposed are squeezing domestic producers. They have previously called for the full imposition of tit-for-tat counter-tariffs against U.S. steel without any exemptions. During the election campaign, the Carney government authorized exemptions for Canadian imports of U.S. steel and aluminum products — called remissions — that amount to about $8 billion. But most of those exemptions favour importers of American steel, which Canadian steel producers say has given their competitors an advantage.

"Basket size continues to improve": Empire CEO sees disconnect between consumer sentiment and in-store spending

Consumer reports say Canadians are cautious on spending, but customer behaviour tells a different story, says grocery chain Empire's ( president and CEO Michael Medline. 'There is no doubt that our customers' behaviour continues to improve,' said Medline on a conference call with analysts on Thursday following the release of fourth-quarter results. Empire operates Safeway, Sobeys, FreshCo, Farm Boy and Longo's, among other grocery retail brands. 'In Q4, we continued to see sales growth in our fresh department, which indicates customers are trading up from non-fresh to fresh products,' he said. 'Basket size continues to improve,' he added. Customers are also shopping at fewer stores than last year, and there's a continued decline in sales made through promotions. When people shop at fewer banner stores, it means the promotional penetration goes down, says Pierre St-Laurent, executive vice-president and chief operating officer. The company is also 'unable to reconcile' what the media says about inflation compared to what Empire's stores are experiencing, Medline adds. 'Let me be crystal clear,' he said, adding: 'We are not seeing inflation in our business outside of historical norms, and Empire's price inflation has remained very stable.' Empire's strategy to manage tariffs and protect its customers from price increases has included turning to more local, Canadian suppliers, tapping into non-U.S. alternative supply sources and working with suppliers to ensure that 'reactionary or unjustified costs' are not passed down to customers, Medline says. Much of the 'Buy Canada' sentiment, especially the preference for Canadian retailers, appears to have some staying power. 'It doesn't take a lot of people changing behaviour to make a real difference in retail, especially in the grocery business, and there are people who have changed their behaviours [and] will not go back,' Medline said. Empire plans to open 26 new stores in fiscal 2026, in hopes of gaining greater market share in pockets where the retailer doesn't have significant exposure compared to its competitors. In a release, the company notes its expansion efforts include Farm Boy, FreshCo and Voilà. 'Empire's underrepresentation in the discount channel is a relative disadvantage versus peers,' said RBC Dominion Securities analyst Irene Nattel and associate analyst Martin Gravel in a research note published June 10. For example, Loblaw has converted many of its conventional stores into discount banners. 'In our view, consumer spending is likely to continue to favour discount banners, and potentially reignite promotional intensity at a time when inflation remains elevated.' Over time, converting more stores to FreshCo should help reduce Empire's structural disadvantage in the discount segment, the note says. Empire raised its quarterly dividend to 22 cents per share, up from 20 cents. The dividend hike follows net earnings of $173 million ($0.74 per share) compared to $149 million ($0.61 per share) last year. As at 11:45 a.m. ET on Thursday, Empire's stock was trading at $54.56, compared to yesterday's close of $51.90.
