Venice Film Festival lineup features Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Emma Stone and Dwayne Johnson
Two years after launching 'Poor Things' at Venice, Yorgos Lanthimos and Stone are returning with 'Bugonia,' an English language remake of the South Korean sci-fi comedy 'Save the Green Planet!' that is among the 21 films playing in the main competition. Clooney will also be back as star of Noah Baumbach's 'Jay Kelly,' in which he plays a famous actor on a trip through Europe with his longtime manager (Sandler).
Some of the other high-profile titles competing for the Golden Lion include: Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein,' with Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the monster; Benny Safdie's sports drama 'The Smashing Machine,' starring Johnson as MMA fighter Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife; and Olivier Assayas's 'The Wizard of the Kremlin,' in which Jude Law plays Vladimir Putin and Paul Dano plays his spin doctor.
Also in competition are Kathryn Bigelow's 'A House of Dynamite,' a political thriller about an imminent missile strike on the U.S., starring Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, and Jim Jarmusch's anthology film 'Father Mother Sister Brother,' with Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver. Many master filmmakers are also in the section: Park Chan-wook will debut 'No Other Choice'; László Nemes has his most personal film yet in 'Orphan'; and François Ozon takes on an Albert Camus adaptation with 'L'étranger.'
One of the titles bound to make waves is Kaouther Ben Hania's 'The Voice of Hind Rajab," about the young girl who was killed along with six other relatives when they were trapped in their car under Israeli fire in northern Gaza.
Luca Guadagnino's 'After the Hunt,' a psychological thriller for the #MeToo era about a complaint of sexual violence at an American university, is debuting out of competition — a joint decision between the filmmaker and Amazon MGM. It will mark Roberts' first time at the festival. She co-stars in the film with Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri.
Julian Schnabel's 'In the Hand of Dante,' based on the cult novel, with Isaac, Gal Gadot, Al Pacino and Martin Scorsese, is also showing out of competition, as is Gus Van Sant's 'Dead Man's Wire,' with Bill Skarsgård, Colman Domingo and an appearance by Pacino.
The festival held on the Lido, a barrier island in the Venetian Lagoon, will open with Paolo Sorrentino's 'La Grazia,' starring Toni Servillo and Anna Ferzetti, on Aug. 27 and run through Sept. 6. Alexander Payne is presiding over the main competition jury, which also includes actor Fernanda Torres and directors Cristian Mungiu, Mohammad Rasoulof and Maura Delpero.
Venice has established itself as a solid launching pad for Oscar hopefuls, with a handful of best picture winners, including 'The Shape of Water,' 'Spotlight,' 'Nomadland' and 'Birdman,' and many more nominees to its name. Last year's edition had several eventual Oscar winning films in the lineup, including Brady Corbet's 'The Brutalist,' which won three including best actor for Adrien Brody, Walter Salles' best international feature winner 'I'm Still Here,' and the animated short 'In the Shadow of the Cypress.'
Corbet co-wrote another competition entry with his partner Mona Fastvold, who directed, 'The Testament of Ann Lee' with Amanda Seyfried. Like 'The Brutalist,' it was also shot on 70 mm, but is quite a bit shorter.
Venice will be just the first stop for several films, including 'Frankenstein' and 'The Smashing Machine,' which will all go on to play at the Toronto Film Festival shortly after.
The festival has programmed 15 documentaries out of competition including Golden Lion winner Laura Poitras, and Mark Obenhaus's, 'Cover-Up,' about investigative journalist Seymour Hersh; Sofia Coppola's documentary 'Marc by Sofia' about her longtime friendship with fashion designer Marc Jacobs; Werner Herzog's doc 'Ghost Elephants,' described as being as exciting as a thriller; and 'Kim Novak's Vertigo."

‘I used nearly 80 000 beads for a Thabo Mbeki portrait – and got to meet him'
When Lindiwe Hlatswayo (30) recently walked onto the stage at Joburg Theatre carrying a portrait made from almost 80 000 beads, she wasn't just presenting artwork to former president Thabo Mbeki – she was proving that childhood dreams, no matter how humble, can come true. After 700 hours of meticulous work over three months, handing the beaded portrait to Mbeki represented the culmination of a journey that began with plastic bottles and loose beads in her Pretoria home. I would collect plastic bottles while my parents bought me beads. I'd paste the beads around the bottles to create decorative pieces or make beaded rings. And when I wasn't beading, I was drawing. Throughout primary school, I honed my drawing skills and beading techniques. In Grade 10, I made a bold decision – with my former teacher as my guide, I secretly went to enquire about enrolling at Pro Arte Alphen Park Performing and Creative Arts High School in Menlyn. I'll never forget walking through the front door at home, application form in hand and watching my parents' surprised faces. While they seemed sceptical and had hoped I would follow a traditional academic route, they supported my artistic dreams. In 2015, I started working at a packaging company and soon after began teaching English online for various Chinese companies. But then Covid hit and we were in lockdown. It was a dark time – I was no longer working, I was pregnant with my first child and we couldn't go anywhere. I started using my beading as an outlet, not knowing it would change everything. The first piece I created was of military officer and former prime minister of Burkina Faso, Thomas Sankara. It took me two months to produce an A5 portrait. At the time, I was testing my limits and discovering what was possible. At the end of 2020, I received my first commissioned work from a client who wanted a portrait of a loved one – and that was the official launch of my company, Beads by Lindiwe. Since then, I've woven portraits that celebrate our heritage and identity. I've created singer Nomcebo Zikode using 18 000 beads, [actress] Nandi Madida's beaded portrait with 16 000 beads and former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi's piece took 14 444 beads, which I use to showcase at my various exhibitions. I also create portraits of historical leaders because I believe this is my way of keeping our heroes alive. My portraits celebrate heritage, identity and resilience – creating a link between the past and present. When I create a portrait, I use Excel to outline my drawing and calculate how many beads I'll need. I then buy the beads at Marabastad, string them and weave the picture together. One of the most challenging aspects is that beads aren't always the same size, which affects the shape of the portrait. Because it was the December holidays, I didn't work on it immediately. I started the piece in March this year. A week before I finished the artwork, I spoke with Lesego about my progress. He then said he had a better idea – with the former president having a birthday celebration in June, it would be best if I gave it to him personally. He connected me with the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, who sent me an official invitation just a day before the event. It took me three months, 700 hours and 77 558 individual beads to create the portrait. Being able to present it to him in person felt surreal. When I went on stage, I felt so honoured to be chosen. During my handover speech, I told him that I hoped the portrait would serve as a lasting reminder of the impact he's made in our country. Punk musician Jock McDonald dies in ‘freak swimming accident'
Singer Jock McDonald of the punk band The Bollock Brothers has died 'in a freak swimming accident' in Bundoran, Ireland. He was 69. News of his death was confirmed by his bandmate, drummer Pat Pattyn, on social media. 'It is with great sadness in my heart, I have to bring you this terrible news… sadly, our singer Jock McDonald died last night in Ireland, apparently a freak swimming accident,' he wrote on Facebook. 'His children asked me to tell you all via this way… his family and all the Bollock Brothers are in shock… we are going to try and give this a place, but that won't be easy.' He asked for privacy for himself and McDonald's family. 'Rest in peace, my friend… I will miss you,' he said. Donegal Live reported that McDonald was taken from the water near the diving boards at Bundoran beach by volunteers for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) on Saturday evening (26 July). He was rushed to Sligo University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A promoter, DJ, manager and musician, McDonald was born Patrick Joseph O'Donnell and grew up between Donegal and Clydebank, Scotland. Formed in 1979 by McDonald, The Bollock Brothers rose to fame with their English-language cover of French musician Serge Gainsbourg's song 'Harley David (Son of a Bitch)'. Other notable releases included their original song 'The Slow Removal of the Left Ear of Vincent van Gogh', which featured Martin Glover from the band Killing Joke. In 1983, they released a cover version of the Sex Pistols' album Never Mind the Bollocks featuring Michael Fagan, the man who twice broke into Buckingham Palace the previous year. Over the years they released nine albums, including their debut The Last Summer and 1987's The Prophecies of Nostradamus. Their latest studio album, Last Will and Testament, was released in 2009 and dedicated to their longtime keyboard player, 'Big Mark' Humphries, who died on 31 March 2008. McDonald was reportedly working on new music prior to his death. Tributes have been paid to him on social media. Independent record label Charly Records posted: 'Charly Records are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jock McDonald, founding member of The Bollock Brothers. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Jock.' "He was more than a brother to me.
