Chandigarh: Once celebrated for its serene boulevards and lush greenery, Chandigarh now finds itself grappling with a chilling transformation. Beneath the surface of its peaceful reputation, a surge in armed crime is shaking the city's foundations — and the numbers paint a grim picture.
Between Jan 2022 and May 2025, the city's 16 police stations, crime branch units, and operation cells have been locked in a relentless battle against a growing tide of violence.
In total, 463 individuals have been arrested under the Arms Act, including 24 operatives linked to notorious gangs such as Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar's syndicate and the Bambiha gang. The haul? A staggering 196 country-made and sophisticated firearms, 647 live cartridges, and 392 long-handled knives — all recovered from the possession of the anti-social elements.
The trend is not just alarming — it's escalating. Arrests under the Arms Act rose from 110 in 2022 to 126 in 2023, and 157 in 2024. In just the first five months of 2025, 70 individuals have already been apprehended with weapons.
Street brawls have turned bloody, with dozens of stabbing incidents reported annually. In response, the police have intensified late-night patrols and nakas, intercepting hundreds of suspects armed with knives.
One of the most chilling incidents unfolded last year, when the district crime cell, in a joint operation with Punjab Police, nabbed six gang members in Gorakhpur, UP, recovering four pistols and 51 bullets. The accused had allegedly fired shots at a businessman's residence in a VVIP area, demanding Rs 2 crore in extortion — a move orchestrated by gangster Goldy Brar.
Another dramatic bust saw three shooters from Lawrence Bishnoi's gang arrested with three pistols and seven bullets, allegedly plotting to assassinate rival gangster Bhupi Rana inside a courtroom, disguised as lawyers.
In Dadumajra, three men were caught with two pistols and five cartridges, accused of attempting a hit on a local resident under orders from Anmol Bishnoi, Lawrence's cousin, operating from the US.
Despite the grim statistics, there is a silver lining. SSP Kanwardeep Kaur emphasized that constant surveillance and swift action have thwarted multiple assassination plots and gang wars. "Our teams have been vigilant, and their timely interventions have saved lives and preserved peace," she said.

Kidney trafficking: Madras HC seeks status report from Tamil Nadu government

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday sought a status report from the state health secretary and director of medical and rural health services on the action taken by them against kidney trafficking in Tamil Nadu. A bench of justices SM Subramaniam and G Arul Murugan gave the direction on a PIL plea by advocate SN Sathishwaran of Ramanathapuram, seeking CBI probe into the racket. The litigant alleged that several labourers from Pallipalayam and nearby areas in Namakkal were lured into selling their kidneys for Rs 5-Rs 10 lakh. Though two hospitals were found to be involved in the said racket, the authorities failed to take action due to political pressure from ruling government, he claimed.

Racket involving Sri Lankan passengers-Chennai airport staff busted; customs seizes Rs 2.5 cr gold

CHENNAI: After a brief hiatus, Chennai Customs on Monday busted another gold smuggling racket involving Sri Lankan transit passengers and a contract staff of the Chennai International Airport leading to the seizure of 2.57 kg gold worth Rs 2.5 crore and the arrest of five persons. The seizure comes after many smugglers started opting for other smuggling modes, following action against the aforesaid modus operandi in 2024, sources said. In a release, Customs said that they mounted surveillance on the transit area of the airport in the intervening night of August 17 and 18. The team found two SL passengers, who landed at 2 am by an Indigo flight, to be suspicious based on their 'weird' travel route of Dubai-Chennai-Singapore-Colombo with longer layovers at Chennai. On Monday, a contract ground handling staff was found loitering near the washroom in the transit area, which incidentally had been used by one of the SL passengers. Customs team intercepted the staff and seized three black-taped, unusually heavy cylindrical balls. On inquiry, the staff confessed that they were balls of gold paste, which were slipped to him by an SL passenger inside the washroom. Officers immediately rounded up three SL transit passengers and two of them admitted to concealing gold paste in their rectum and delivering it to the staff. Three cylindrical balls of gold were also seized after search, taking the total seizure to 2,576 gm of gold worth Rs 2.5 crore. In a follow-up action, the investigators used the contract staff as bait and sent him outside the airport, which resulted in the arrest of two Indians, one of whom was a handler and another a receiver at different locations outside the airport.
