‘Never seen anything quite like this': Chicago pastor shaken after visit to mass shooting scene where 4 were killed
Pastor Donovan Price thought he had seen it all, and had visited other mass killing sites in the past. However, the scene outside the Artis Restaurant and Lounge in the city's River North neighborhood, following a record release party for local rapper Mello Buckzz, continues to haunt him, he said Thursday morning.
'I didn't expect that many people to be shot, police calling for six more ambulances, and everybody just going crazy, trying to find the people they were with, find their cell phones, find the keys to their cars, just madness,' Price told The Independent. 'And then, the amount of blood in the street. Stepping in blood, the mayhem, people laying in the street… I just really was overwhelmed by the number of people who were actually involved, and not bystanders – just, everybody had a stake in what had just happened.'
As unsuspecting attendees streamed out of the club shortly after 11pm, a dark-colored SUV pulled up and a person – or persons – inside the vehicle started shooting into the crowd, leaving four dead and 14 wounded, according to cops. The SUV immediately fled, and no arrests have yet been made.
Price arrived 20 to 25 minutes after the bullets began flying, he said.
'I work with homicides and shootings here in Chicago, I've been doing it since 2016, I had never seen anything quite like this,' he went on. 'And so it was a big shock.'
Price said he immediately 'ran in and helped folks and did what I could,' assisting victims, helping family members find loved ones and trying to reassure traumatized witnesses. And while he was totally focused on the task at hand, Price said, 'it was still very taxing, more taxing than it had perhaps been before.'
'Afterwards, I went to three of the hospitals and there were a lot of people to calm down outside,' Price explained, voice breaking with emotion. 'Once it was over, I was able to just kind of take a breather, and it was very sad.'
He found himself sobbing over what he had witnessed, Price said.
In the aftermath, Price took to X to express what he was feeling.
'2 hours ago my life changed,' Price posted at 3:01 a.m.
'pray for these… every time I try to talk tears run down my face,' he posted a half-hour later.
'just sitting in my car crying for some of the people I held tonight,' Price posted at 3:53 a.m.
Of the 18 people shot, five were men and 13 were women, police said. All but two of the victims were between the ages of 21 and 32.
A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old man were among the four dead; two women were also killed, but no further details on them were provided by authorities. Mello Buckzz later posted on Instagram that her boyfriend and best friend had died in the shooting.
'Prayers up for all my sisters, God please wrap your arms around every last one of them,' Buckzz said in a subsequent statement. 'We need you, I need you…'
As of early Thursday, three of the 14 people injured were listed in critical condition, nine were listed in good condition, one was listed in fair condition and one was listed in stable condition.
By the numbers, shootings and homicides in Chicago have dropped sharply, with declines of 39 percent and 33 percent, respectively. At the same time, Price told The Independent that 'things seem more intense, the dynamic has changed.'
As far as gun violence goes, Price said, 'There may always be a problem there. There has always been a problem.'
'I do know that many people are doing great work to battle this, and I hope they get the strength [to keep going] despite cuts in budgets and that type of thing, but all we can do is continue to [try],' Price went on.
He said he hopes that 'we, as people, as a nation, as cities, as a world,' can recognize our individual roles in helping create a less violent existence for all.
'Maybe all you can do is sit in your chair and pray,' Price said. 'Make sure you do that. If you know young people out there, speak to them. Speak to the people you know, the people in your circle, and if the next person does the same thing, and the next person does the same thing, then the whole community will be safe.'

Kelsey Fitzsimmons, 28, was shot once on Monday evening after three fellow officers arrived at her home to serve a protection order on behalf of her fiance. The off-duty North Andover Police Department officer had allegedly voiced suicidal ideation both while she was pregnant and after she gave birth. Her firefighter fiance had expressed concerns that it would escalate to physical violence against their four-month-old son, according to The Boston Globe. 'I fear she will kill the baby at any moment,' he wrote in the restraining order application. 'Kelsey is threatening to take the baby 'far, far, far away for a long, long time.' This is how she has spoken about killing herself in the past. 'She punched her stomach repeatedly while pregnant, saying she would kill herself and the baby.' He claimed that during a June 28 outing, Fitzsimmons allegedly punched him in the face three times while intoxicated. He added that during that altercation, she chased after him and their child, prompting him to seek shelter at a motel as their friends called four different police departments for help. The firefighter said the baby boy was staying with his parents at the time, but Fitzsimmons' parents came to collect him. 'I fear if she doesn't have me she will kill the baby because she has said she has nothing besides me,' he wrote. 'Fitzsimmons is a danger to myself, her son and herself.' He is now seeking full custody of their son, and that matter is still being heard by the courts. As per Fitzsimmons' restraining order, she must surrender all weapons and stay away from both the North Andover Fire Department and his current home. The order will effect until at least July 14. The new dad had warned officers in his initial report that Fitzsimmons may respond poorly to being served the order. When officers came to knock on her door, an 'armed confrontation' took place. 'As a result of that armed confrontation, one of the responding officers discharged their weapon, which struck Ms. Fitzsimmons once,' Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker said. The wounded officer had to be airlifted by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital, where she remains in a stable condition. Fitzsimmons, who had been with the department about 18 months, was already on administrative leave and had filed to have her service weapon returned during her leave, according to police. Her leave will now be extended. In March, police and emergency medical responders were called to Fitzsimmons's home for what was described as a 'female having a mental health episode,' records show. She was hospitalized for 12 hours and diagnosed with postpartum depression. At that time, she turned in her service weapon. After being medically cleared in June, Fitzsimmons was reinstated to active duty, along with her license to carry a firearm. A note in the court paperwork had warned officers that serving Fitzsimmons could carry additional risk. 'Defendant is an officer with a license to carry. Plaintiff expressed concerns regarding Defendant's reaction to being served.' 'Pursuant to the court order, one of the standard boxes to check is retrieval of any firearms in the home,' Tucker said. He added that the restraining order process can be 'some of the most dangerous duties that police officers can cover, no matter who the object of that order is.' The officer who fired the shot is a veteran with more than 20 years of experience, Tucker added. The department does not use body cameras, so there is no video of the shooting, according to Chief Gray. The incident is under investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to Tucker's office, while Fitzsimmons recovers in the hospital.

A man who recently claimed a $167.3 million Powerball jackpot has been unmasked as a career criminal with a lengthy rap sheet spanning more than three decades. James Shannon Farthing, 50, of Georgetown, Kentucky, made headlines in April after splitting the historic jackpot with his mother, Linda Grizzle, but his past soon came back into focus following his arrest just two days after the win, prompting scrutiny of his criminal history. Farthing has spent a cumulative 30 years behind bars for a wide range of offenses, including domestic violence involving strangulation, attempted bribery of correctional officers while incarcerated, and the distribution of cocaine to an undercover law enforcement agent, according to a report. His decades-long criminal record dates back to his teen years, as he was only able to complete 10 years of formal schooling, ultimately earning his GED in prison, The Smoking Gun reported. In his later years, Farthing escalated his criminal activities by becoming involved in drug trafficking, reportedly enlisting his mother in a plot to smuggle marijuana into a maximum-security correctional facility. He ultimately accepted a plea agreement that exonerated Grizzle of involvement, resulting in a 10-year prison sentence, according to the report. However, Farthing's incarceration did little to curb his misconduct. He was repeatedly placed in administrative segregation for infractions that included smuggling various forms of contraband - such as drugs and alcohol-related items - into the prison. Additionally, he was known to extort fellow inmates by charging them for the return of personal belongings he had stolen, according to the report. The heavily tattooed career criminal was also repeatedly denied parole, in part due to his extensive and ongoing pattern of criminal behavior, which showed little indication of abating. Farthing's physical transformation has been extensively documented through numerous mug shots over the years. But, even his recent acquisition of enormous wealth has not curtailed his criminal tendencies. Earlier this year, on April 30, while vacationing in Florida with his girlfriend, Farthing was arrested at the TradeWinds Island Resort in St. Pete Beach after allegedly punching a fellow guest and kicking a responding deputy in the face - just days after his record-breaking lottery win. Police were called to the resort's bar around 11:10 p.m. after reports of a physical altercation between Farthing and another guest. Authorities said Farthing was intoxicated, uncooperative and aggressive, ultimately lashing out violently at law enforcement. The deputy was reported to have swelling and redness on the right side of his face under his eye, according to an affidavit. The jackpot winner now faces charges of battery on a law enforcement officer - a felony - and a pair of misdemeanors, resisting an officer without violence and battery. In addition, officials in Kentucky have issued a warrant for violating his parole, which stems from prior convictions for theft and drug offenses. The winning $2 ticket was purchased at a Clark's Pump-N-Shop in Georgetown, where Farthing and his mother were faced with the choice of receiving 30 annual payments or take the cash option of $77.3 million.

'Predator' teacher, 30, makes jaw-dropping claim as she is accused of 'raping boy 50 times and sent damning text messages'
An ousted special education teacher who allegedly raped a former student has blamed the accusation on being 'good looking' and now claims she is the victim of misogyny. Christina Formella, 30, has long denied allegations that she engaged in an inappropriate relationship with the unidentified teenage student, whom prosecutors say she sent explicit text messages and raped more than 50 times. She is now facing a total of 55 criminal charges, including criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, indecent solicitation of a child and grooming. But Formella's family is now claiming she is just the victim of 'sexist scrutiny,' the New York Post reports. 'It's a spectacle - a public ritual that publishes women not for what they've done, but for how they're perceived,' a representative for the family told the outlet. 'When men face accusations, we discuss evidence and procedure. When women face accusations, we attack their character, their choices and their worth as human beings,' the family rep continued. 'This isn't justice - it's gender-based persecution disguised as accountability.' The representative for the family went on to explain that the 'public discourse' around Formella's case focuses on her 'appearance, her private life [and] even her lipstick - as if those details bear on guilt or innocence.' He also hit out at 'Internet caricatures' that call Formella a '"predator," "unfaithful wife" [and] "hypocrite,"' and claimed the coverage of the former teacher and soccer coach's alleged crimes have turned into 'real-world stalking' by 'so-called content creators.' Formella was even once followed to church, 'violating the sanctity of worship and terrorizing her family,' the representative said. 'Christina's case isn't being "covered" - she's being hunted,' he continued in a statement, adding that Formella has become the victim of 'bullying.' 'Reckless speculation, misinformation and theatrical coverage do nothing to serve justice and set hard-won respect for women back decades,' the representative concluded. Prosecutors have said Formella began an illicit relationship with the boy when he was just 14 years old and a member of the soccer team she coached at Downers Grove South High School. Formella had taken it upon herself to privately tutor the teen before class after an injury sidelined him. But prosecutors say the arrangement became more sinister when the special education teacher started sending the teenager flirtatious messages using the school's messaging system. Their exchanges eventually moved to text, with the alleged pedophile at one point telling the teen she 'loved' him and that he was 'perfect,' according to messages previously revealed in court. The relationship then allegedly turned physical inside her classroom in December 2023, when she was 28 and the boy was 15. The allegations first came to light in March, after the boy's mother stumbled upon the text messages on his phone, including one in which Formella allegedly wrote: 'I love having sex with you'. DuPage County prosecutors had initially believed the sordid affair culminated in a single sexual encounter following months of their inappropriate messages. But they say further evidence revealed the pair had sex more than 50 times, most of the time in her classroom but also multiple times at the home she shared with her unsuspecting husband, Michael. Formella even allegedly kept a 'memoir' on her phone during the relationship. 'I warned you that we should never have started dating a long long long fking time ago and you gas lit me and convinced me it was fine,' she allegedly said of the teen boy. 'We WILL be in each other's lives forever. We will be able to love each other while also living our own lives,' the diary added. Formella later claimed the writings were part of a therapeutic journaling exercise, and insisted that any sexual references in the entries were about her husband. Yet in a message to the boy, prosecutors say, Formella said she planned to dump her husband and abscond with his family's vast fortune. The couple had tied the knot last year, just weeks before her alleged sordid affair with the teen reportedly fizzled out in September. When the allegations of Formella's relationship then emerged earlier this year, Michael said he was left 'completely blindsided' by the allegations and swore he had no clue his wife was allegedly abusing an underage boy - despite their sexual activities at his house and his wife allegedly texting the teen while they were vacationing in Italy. Still, Michael has been by his wife's side at court hearings, as has his father, Randy Formella. They were even pictured supporting Formella when she appeared in court earlier this week to brazenly ask a judge to slash the distance she must keep from the alleged victim. She has been required to keep a 5,000-foot buffer zone from the boy since her charges were upgraded last month. That meant that she had to leave her marital home, and Christina has been holed up at her parents' $560,000 home on a golf course ever since. But in a bold request on Wednesday, she asked the court to slash that distance in half to just 2,500 feet, arguing the boy often hangs out with friends near her house and even has a job in the area. Judge Mia McPherson ultimately rejected her argument and denied the motion.
