After Strike Threat, Video Game Workers and Microsoft-Owned ZeniMax Media Reach Tentative Agreement

Microsoft-owned ZeniMax Media and a union representing hundreds of its workers have reached a tentative agreement on a first labor contract. The process to get there was long and wasn't without drama, given that just one month before, union members aligned with the Communications Workers of America overwhelmingly authorized a strike in a bid to push through some additional gains at a turbulent time in the video game industry. More from The Hollywood Reporter Terrence Howard Movie Shoot Hit With IATSE Strike AI's Napster Moment May Be Next New Report Portrays California's Film and TV Production Environment as Uniquely Burdensome and Expensive 'Going toe-to-toe with one of the largest corporations in the world isn't a small feat,' said union bargaining committee member and QA tester Page Branson in a statement. Branson called the agreement a 'monumental victory' for current and future video game workers. A Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement that the deal represents a 'meaningful step forward' and 'a shared commitment to constructive dialogue and a common goal of fostering a positive workplace.' The provisional deal, which won't go into effect unless members ratify the agreement in a vote that ends on June 20, would apply to more than 300 quality assurance workers represented by three separate CWA Locals. The staffers work at company sites in Hunt Valley and Rockville, Maryland and Austin and Dallas, Texas. Said the vice president of one of the CWA Locals representing the workers, Local 6215's vice president Alex Doblado, 'Even amidst a rapidly evolving industry with significant volatility and job insecurity, video game workers never lost sight of what they deserved.' Reached after two years of negotiations, the deal raises minimum salaries for workers and provides for other wage increases, said the union, which didn't offer further details as of press time. It institutes a new credit policy that the union says will acknowledge QA testers' roles in the games they help produce, creates grievance procedures and 'includes protections against arbitrary dismissal.' It also enshrines a deal, reached in 2023 between the union and the studio, that requires the employer to provide advance notice of any uses of AI that could affect union members and to negotiate those impacts at the labor group's request. The agreement also established particular 'guiding principals' to the use of AI in the workplace. When they went public in 2022, the ZeniMax workers became the first group to attempt to organize a union at Microsoft. As part of a labor neutrality agreement Microsoft made with the CWA earlier that year, the tech giant agreed to voluntarily recognize the group if enough workers signaled their support for joining. In a statement, CWA District 2-13 vice president Mike Davis said he looked forward to negotiating contracts for other video game workers in the near future. 'This is just the beginning,' he said. United Airlines flight attendants are set for pay rises of up to 45%

United Airlines flight attendants are set for big pay increases under the terms of a tentative agreement. The United branch of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA reached a tentative deal with the airline on May 23. The first details of the deal were published on Tuesday. It states that cabin crew members would receive pay increases up to 45.6% over the contract's five-year timeframe. The immediate raise would be as much as 27.8%, meaning a rise in hourly pay for those in their first year from $28.88 to $36.92. By the end of the contract, the starting pay would be $42.06 an hour. The proposed increases for longer-serving flight attendants would be between 26% to almost 28%. It means pay for the longest-serving staff would jump from $67.11 an hour to $84.78. By the end of the contract, the hourly rate would be $96.58. Flight attendants are typically only paid for the time of the flight, but the tentative agreement also includes half-pay during boarding. Delta Air Lines was the first in the US to introduce this back in 2022. There is also a one-off payment for retroactive pay. The union said it was an "industry-leading" formula worth $595 million, which compensates for the lack of a cost-of-living raise for United flight attendants since 2020. Contract negotiations have dragged on while competitors have ratified their own agreements. On May 13, about a dozen flight attendants gatecrashed a press event unveiling United's new Polaris business class to highlight the lack of a deal. American Airlines flight attendants ratified a deal last September that gave them an immediate pay increase of up to 20.5%. Five months earlier, Southwest Airlines flight attendants won a 22.3% pay increase. Delta flight attendants, who aren't unionized, have received annual pay increases. The latest put the starting wage at $36.92 — the same as United's tentative contract. The United AFA is set to hold a road show, both virtually and at airports nationwide, before voting opens on July 7. Voting closes on July 29. If the contract is approved by union members, it will take effect the following day.

United Airlines Makes 'Record' Announcement With New Flights

Just a few days before Memorial Day, United Airlines announced it reached an agreement with the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA "that will provide industry-leading wages and many other improvements for United's 28,000 flight attendants if ratified." The contract language is still being finalized and the agreement is then subject to approval by the AFA's Master Executive Council, including all Local Presidents. "If they approve, the tentative agreement will be put out for ratification by our flight attendants," United Airlines said. While the airline prepares to finalize its new deal, it made another major announcement. Over the weekend United announced a record travel schedule coming this fall from its Chicago O'Hare hub. In October, the airline is scheduled to fly up to 592 flights a day from O'Hare, more than any other time this year — surpassing the summer's schedule. But that's not all. The airline also plans to add 50 additional flights in November from Chicago with service to warm-weather destinations like Phoenix, Austin and Orlando. This fall, United will also expand and extend its service to several Latin and Caribbean destinations, including: Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR): Extended weekend service in October Cozumel, Mexico (CZM): Extended weekend service in November Saint Martin (SXM): Extended weekend service in November Guatemala City, Guatemala (GUA): Additional weekend service in October Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (PUJ): Additional weekend service in October San José del Cabo, Mexico (SJD): Additional weekend service in October 'Building on the momentum of an anticipated-record-breaking summer, we're taking things further this fall with our busiest flight schedule of the year — adding more flights and extending service to warm-weather destinations in the U.S. and around the world,' Omar Idris, United's Vice President of O'Hare said in a statement. 'This is truly a historic time for our hometown hub of O'Hare as we're not only offering our customers the largest network from Chicago, but also new industry-leading amenities both at the airport and in the air.' The fall growth follows a record trend for United at Chicago O'Hare as the airline prepares to fly more seats than they have in the past two decades. In July, United will fly a peak of 71,000 seats a Airlines Makes 'Record' Announcement With New Flights first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 2, 2025
