A leading dentist has warned a common misunderstanding is stopping people from booking appointments.
Figures released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare showed 32.1 per cent of people were avoiding the dentist due to the cost, but many are also falling into the mistake of thinking they do not need to.
Dr Mikaela Chinotti has been a Sydney-based dentist for 13 years and told Daily Mail Australia that many people were unaware that they had festering oral health problems simply because it had not hit a nerve yet and they were not in pain.
'We need people to understand that just because you're not feeling pain, doesn't mean there's nothing wrong with your mouth,' Dr Chinotti said.
'People are delaying dental visits due to costs but also because they can't see or feel anything wrong, so they think everything is okay.
'Even a dentist might not see anything wrong by looking in the mouth which is why we take x-rays which detect things hiding under the surface in the early stages.'
Dr Chinotti said most patients 'typically won't have pain unless it's really bad', yet they have issues that need to be nipped in the bud.
'Once you've started to experience dental pain it's probably something that's quite advanced in your mouth because in the early stages you don't typically have discomfort,' she said.
Dr Chinotti explained her daily oral routine to ensure her teeth and gums were constantly in good shape and it was not complicated.
She said simply brushing in the morning and before bed, along with flossing and using interdental brushes once a day, was sufficient.
'I only clean between my teeth once a day, but some people may need to do it twice a day if they have gum disease,' she said.
'Flossing between your teeth before you brush can help to break up the stuff between the teeth then you brush and move it away from between your teeth.
'People should be flossing every day. We know that only about one in four do it. Flossing really helps with the state of the gums between the teeth.'
She said her toothpaste of choice was Colgate Total.
Dr Chinotti also said another part of good oral health was diet-related.
'There's only so much you can do to protect your teeth though the actual cleaning process,' Dr Chinotti said.
'Brushing your teeth twice a day is possibly not going to save you if you choose to drink sugary drinks throughout the day.
'It's not just sugary drinks but acidic drinks like juices and ice teas that can lead your teeth to be worn away.'
Dr Chinotti also warned against brushing shortly after consuming soft drinks because the acids in them can soften tooth enamel, and brushing immediately afterward can cause further damage.
A person's saliva naturally helps neutralise acids and remineralise enamel, so waiting at least 30 minutes after a sugary drink allowed that process to work effectively.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare revealed Australians were spending $11billion a year on dental services; an average of $4,321 per person.
Dr Chinotti, who also represents the Australian Dental Association, said most people would not need to spend anywhere near that amount if they took greater care of their teeth and gums on a daily basis.
'You could go through your life and not have any major dental treatments because you've had your regular check-ups, clean and floss every day and have paid attention to your diet,' she said.

A couple are taking legal action against a health board after their daughter died hours after her birth. Liliwen Iris Thomas died in October 2022 just 20 hours after she was born at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff due to complications during labour. Her parents, Emily Brazier and Rhodri Thomas, have launched a civil action against Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. The couple, from Cardiff, who are also parents to daughter Carys and son Ellis, have spoken of the devastation at the loss of Liliwen. They said Ms Brazier's pregnancy had been classed as high-risk and had been monitored accordingly during the antenatal period. But when she went into labour she was left alone to give birth, they claim. 'I have very hazy memories of my labour but then I vividly remember peeling back the covers and seeing Liliwen there, completely still and lifeless,' she said. 'That image will be with me forever. I still have flashbacks and nightmares and have been in counselling since it happened.' Mr Thomas said he was not present when Ms Brazier went into labour due to the maternity unit not allowing partners on the ward overnight, unless their partner was in active labour, which at the point of him leaving she was not. 'I should have been there, I could have been Emily's advocate,' he said. 'I would have pressed the call bell and alerted midwives that she was clearly in active labour and needed extra monitoring and help.' Shortly before midnight on October 9, Ms Brazier said she was given pain relief and left with gas and air before stirring from her drowsiness after 2am to discover her daughter had been born. 'It was absolute panic from that point, they took Liliwen away and rushed me up to the delivery suite, I had lost a lot of blood and needed stitches, IV fluids and a blood transfusion,' she said. 'All this happened while I was still on the induction ward, with only curtains around my bed separating me from four other women. It must have been horrendous for them too.' Liliwen was treated in the neonatal intensive care unit but died later that day. Since her death Ms Brazier, who at the time was studying to be a nurse, has opted against a career in the profession and has been diagnosed with PTSD. 'So many happy memories and special family moments are tinged with sadness,' she said. 'I dread family events and Christmas as Liliwen will never be there, she will always be the missing piece. 'I look at the faces of my living children and long to know what Liliwen would look like now at two-and-a-half years old. I will never get over her death, I feel stuck in time. 'I will never be the same person again. Holding your child as they take their last breath, leaving them behind after their last ever cuddle, walking out of the hospital with an empty car seat, there are so many painful memories seared into my brain. 'I have lost my child; it's every parent's worst nightmare and we live the nightmare every single day.' The couple are being supported in their case by lawyers Slater and Gordon. Lara Bennett, a senior associate at the firm, said: 'We are supporting Emily and Rhodri in every way we can to secure justice for their daughter after the most unimaginable and traumatic ordeal.' A spokeswoman for the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: 'Our sincere thoughts and heartfelt condolences remain with Liliwen's family during this incredibly difficult time. 'The health board is fully engaged with the inquest process and it would be inappropriate to comment further until the inquest concludes.'

A British backpacker allegedly killed a father after ploughing into him while riding drunk on an e-scooter, an Australian court has heard. Alicia Kemp, 24, potentially faces up to 20 years in prison after she was arrested and charged for allegedly riding the hired e-scooter on a footpath and knocking down 51-year-old engineer Thanh Phan, 51, who died of brain injuries following the May 31 tragedy in Perth, Western Australia. Kemp was told by Perth Magistrates Court that she could not be bailed out as she posed too great a flight risk. The court was told that she was in Australia with her partner on a four-month tourist visa and that she had been working at Durty Nelly's Irish pub in Perth since arriving. She had been out drinking on Saturday afternoon from 2.30pm with a friend, who was kicked out of a bar for being too drunk. Later that evening, she hired an e-scooter at around 8.30pm. Police told the court that she was the main driver, while her friend was a passenger. Prosecutors said that Kemp was driving in an 'inexplicably dangerous' manner, which as caught on CCTV, and that pedestrians were forced to 'take evasive action' as she rode down Murray Street in Perth's Central Business District. She had a blood alcohol level of 0.158 as she was riding. Western Australian law states that electric vehicle drivers must have a level lower than 0.05 to legally drive. She was also travelling at 15mph as 'she careered into his back', prosecutors said, adding that this caused Phan to fall forward and hit his head. Tragically, he suffered 'a significant brain bleed', while Kemp's friend, a 26-year-old who had not yet been identified, was thrown from the scooter and suffered a fractured skull and broken nose. Phan was taken to the Royal Perth Hospital for surgery, where he died on Tuesday. His family said in a statement following his death: 'On Saturday night, Thanh Phan – a beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend – was struck by an electric scooter and critically injured. 'We received the heartbreaking news that Thanh passed away as a result of his injuries. 'We ask that the media respect the privacy of Thanh's family as they grieve their loss. 'The family has no other comment to make on the issue at this time.' The magistrate in charge of Alicia's case said that remanding the British backpacker in custody was a 'very difficult decision for the court to make. He said that the prosecution's strong case and the prospect of a long prison sentence if convicted meant that there was a risk of '[Kemp] not returning to court to answer the charges', adding: 'The temptation might be that [she] won't return. I can't manage that risk.' Kemp remains in custody and will appear before the court again on July 15.
