Father of boy sexually assaulted in tent saw suspect walk away, police say
Detective Superintendent Calum Smith said the eight-year-old had been left 'traumatised and upset' by the incident, which took place at the Loch Ness Bay campsite near Drumnadrochit before 1am on Thursday.
Police Scotland have launched a significant investigation and are working 'every day' to find the suspect, who is described as a bald man aged 35-50 and about 5ft 10in.
The child was in a tent when a man approached him and carried out the attack. The boy's family were in a tent next to him.
Mr Smith spoke to journalists about the ongoing investigation on Friday.
He told the PA news agency: 'At the time, the father has overheard the incident, has come out, and has seen the man walking away from the tent.'
The detective said the suspect spoke back to the boy's father, who had asked what he was doing, before walking off.
Officers are keeping an open mind as to whether the suspect was staying at campsite, south of Inverness, he said.
Mr Smith said: 'I fully understand that the public will be upset with what's happened and distressed with this incident happening in the local area.
'What I would like to do is reassure the public that we have got dedicated resources working every day towards resolving it, and identifying the person involved and bringing them to justice.'
Police have appealed for information, asking anyone who was in the area at the time to get in touch.
While there is CCTV at the campsite, the incident itself was not caught on camera.
Mr Smith said the public had been 'excellent' in helping so far.
He said the boy and his family is being supported by specialist officers.
The detective added: 'This is reassuringly very, very rare.
'However, that doesn't take away from the fact that this is a very distressing, horrible incident that we need to resolve.'
Anyone with information has been asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0167 of July 31.

Persistent store manager helps police arrest armed robbery suspect in Worcester
A Worcester man has been arrested for armed robbery after allegedly threatening a liquor store clerk with a handgun. A persistent store manager is being credited for leading police to him. "I saw someone that looked a little rough walking and wandering," said Mohamed Abdel-Mawla, manager of a Worcester Price Chopper, who had just given an employee a ride to work when he saw suspicious activity at Boston Liquor store next door. "When he was walking into the liquor store, he had that bag in his right hand, and he pulled a gun and he opened the door with his left hand slowly," said Abdel-Mawla. Worcester police said 36-year-old Liam Chagnon was getting nips and cigarettes when he suddenly threatened the liquor store clerk with a handgun. A store manager who did not want to be identified spoke with WBZ-TV. "It was really bad because it was his first time he had ever saw a gun," the manager said. "He was scared, very scared." The clerk can be heard on surveillance saying, "I got you", and is seen nervously bagging the items while facing the gun. Mohamed Abdel-Mawla called 911 and then followed Chagnon as he made his way down the shopping plaza with a police dispatcher on the line. "He was walking by the stores, kind of walking fast, sweating, shaking a little bit here and there," Abdel-Mawla said. He was worried Chagnon would even go into Price Chopper armed, but the suspect, he says, made his way to Ted's Pizza where he was seen trying to open a locked door. Abdel-Mawla was still watching from a distance as the suspect walked a few minutes to an apartment complex where police arrived and made the arrest thanks to Abdel-Mawla's persistence. "I felt that I had to follow him to make sure that people are safe from this guy," he said. The liquor store manager says Chagnon is a regular customer who sometimes needs help, but this was different. She's grateful to Abdel-Mawla for taking such quick action. "He's very brave. It seems like he's helping everyone out here too, but I hope people will not be afraid," she said. Abdel-Mawla says he hopes he prevented something from happening. Fortunately, no one was injured, and Chagnon has been charged with armed robbery.

Saskatoon Police investigate recent suspicious death as a homicide
A suspicious death last week is now being investigated as a homicide. At about 12:40 a.m. on July 31, Saskatoon police got a report of an injured person. They were called to an address in the 300 block of Avenue J South, near Optimist Park in Saskatoon. There, responders found a 27-year-old woman dead, and it was listed as suspicious at the time. The death marks Saskatoon's 7th homicide of the year. The Saskatoon Police Service's Major Crime Section is continuing the investigation, and urge the public to come forward with information and call 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Rash of car thefts under investigation in Arlington Heights, police say
Arlington Heights police are investigating a rash of car thefts targeting Hyundais over the last week. Police said last Tuesday, July 28, a man told police his silver Hyundai was stolen from a paring lot in the 300 block of North Salem Avenue during the overnight hours. The next night someone stole a blue Hyundai from a parking lot in the 200 block of North Kasper Avenue sometime between 8 p.m. and 2:20 a.m. the next day. Then, early Wednesday morning, someone stole a black Hyundai from a driveway in the 900 block of East Olive Street. Over the weekend a man also reported to Arlington Heights police that someone broke into his blue Mazda in the 3400 block of West Payton Place and stole his wallet. The thefts are under investigation. Arlington Police have not released any further information.
