Mathieu van der Poel overcomes bottle in the face and Tadej Pogacar threat to win dramatic Paris-Roubaix

Independent13-04-2025

Mathieu van der Poel overcame a fierce challenge by world champion and Paris-Roubaix debutant Tadej Pogacar, as well as being hit in the face by a bottle thrown by an idiotic spectator, to claim his third straight victory in the Queen of the Classics.
Pogacar, who was looking to become the first Tour de France winner to also prevail in the 'Hell of the North' since Bernard Hinault in 1981, overcooked a turn with 38km to go and lost his balance on a cobbled section, heading into the crash barriers to leave his rival clear one week after taming the Dutchman at the Tour of Flanders.
Van der Poel did not look back and, although Pogacar threatened to close the 20-second gap, ultimately increased his lead despite a late puncture that required a quick tyre change to snatch his eighth title in a Monument classic after also winning Milan-San Remo (2023 and 2025) and the Tour of Flanders (2020, 2022 and 2024).
The former world champion, who had a bottle thrown at his face by a spectator, is the first rider to win Paris-Roubaix three times in a row since the Italian Francesco Moser (1978-80).
'It means a lot. It is such a hard race and I was really suffering,' Van der Poel said after his victory. 'Too bad Tadej had his mistake in the corner.
'I just had to go for it but it was still quite hard until the finish line. It was really hard, especially with the last two sectors with the headwind, I was really struggling. I am happy to make it to the finish line.'
And despite being beaten by Pogacar a week ago, the Dutchman insisted revenge wasn't on his mind during the race.
'No, not really,' smiled Van der Poel. 'I'm just happy I found my good legs again. But we all know what an incredible champion Tadej is. What he does here in his first Roubaix, it does not surprise me but it is also not normal. He is just an exceptional talent.
'Probably, it would have been the two of us going to the velodrome if he does not make a mistake. So, I guess we will see him back next year to take his revenge.'
Despite his light weight – a big disadvantage on cobbled roads – and a scare on Van der Poel's first offensive move, Pogacar dealt several blows until making a fatal mistake.
Van der Poel's brutal attack 87km from the finish left Pogacar gasping for air and prompted the Slovenian to request his team's assistance for glucose gels.
After recovering, Pogacar accelerated with 71km left as Denmark's Mads Pedersen, another pre-race favourite, suffered an untimely puncture.
Van der Poel again attacked in the cobbled section of Mons-en-Pevele and his own teammate Jasper Philipsen could not follow, leaving the Dutchman and Pogacar in a tight battle.
It fizzled out, however, when Pogacar made his costly mistake on a sharp bend and after a change of bike for the Slovenian in the finale, there was no reason to panic for Van der Poel when he punctured.
Pogacar, however, still became the first Tour champion since Eddy Merckx in 1975 to end up on the Paris-Roubaix podium. Pedersen took third place, completing a podium of road race world champions, with Fred Wright the best Brit in ninth.

Pep Lijnders breaks Jurgen Klopp promise to join Pep Guardiola at Man City

Pep Lijnders left Liverpool back in 2024 following Jurgen Klopp's decision to exit Anfield and he has now reappeared somewhere very surprising after a false start in his first managerial job Former Liverpool coach Pep Lijnders has gone against his word by completing a sensational move to Manchester City. The Dutchman left Anfield last summer as he followed the outgoing boss Jurgen Klopp out of the door. Lijnders had enjoyed two spells on Merseyside having initially joined under Brendan Rodgers, while he was a trusted ally of Klopp. Following his exit, the 42-year-old very quickly found a new job having been appointed as Red Bull Salzburg manager. ‌ But that move did not go according to plan as he was sacked after just 29 games. Lijnders has now found another new role after being appointed as one of Pep Guardiola's assistants at Man City. ‌ He is one of two new coaches appointed at the Etihad, with James French being confirmed as a set-piece coach. Director of Football Hugo Viana said: 'We are all delighted that Pepijn and James have joined our senior coaching set-up. 'Pepijn and James have each amassed huge experience working in their individual roles over the past few years. Their talent, application, work ethic and all-round commitment are totally aligned with the values that underpin how Pep wants football to be played. 'And I have no doubt at all that both will prove to be very important assets for Pep and his coaching team as we prepare for the Club World Cup and then the 2025/26 season.' Lijnders new job sees him go against the promise that he made to his ex-Liverpool boss Klopp. Upon leaving Anfield, he claimed that he would never be an assistant to anyone else and was solely focusing on his own managerial career. He said: '10 years of the club and my boys don't know anything else, they are Scousers. I owe this club everything. They don't owe me anything, to be honest. ‌ Who will win the Premier League next season? Share your predictions in the comments below 'It's 10 years full of dedication. I always said I will finish with Jurgen (Klopp); the moment I will not assist anyone else, that's the moment I will go and I will manage. That was always the case. So when we spoke, it was clear for me: OK, then I go and manage, and we end this project together [that] we started. 'It's not easy. My boys, my wife; my boys are two proper Scousers and their whole life they will be. Maybe posh ones! But still! I cannot say thank you enough to everybody involved.' While Lijnders has bounced from the hotseat back to the assistant's chair, Klopp has also changed career direction. He is currently the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull and has hinted that he may never return to management. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. What Benjamin Sesko has said about transfer as Arsenal saga heads into defining hours

Benjamin Sesko is one of two potential striker signings for Arsenal this summer and the RB Leipzig striker has regularly clarified his future with the German side amid plenty of speculation Benjamin Sesko could finally get a Premier League move this summer. Arsenal are pushing hard for the RB Leipzig hitman as they aim to bolster their frontline ahead of next season. It would be quite the coup for the Gunners given the Slovenian striker has also been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea in the past. He is one of two forwards that Mikel Arteta has his eyes on, the other being Viktor Gyokeres. ‌ And while the North London side are firmly in the race, they could be met with one issue: competition from elsewhere. Saudi sides are also making their interest known having tabled a £30m-per-year deal to Gyokeres. ‌ Al-Hilal are ready to make a move after losing out on Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen which could leave Arsenal's plans in tatters. They want a deal struck TODAY, ahead of the first phase of the summer window closing. That would allow them to register the forward for the inaugural - and money spinning - Club World Cup. It means that June 10, could be the defining day in the Sesko to Arsenal transfer saga, with a resolution potentially just hours away. So, what exactly has Sesko said about his future and could he have dropped a clue about where his future lies? Mirror Football takes a look… Leipzig 'better' This summer's window is far from the first time that Sesko has been linked with a sensational Premier League switch. In 2023, Manchester United were very keen on him during a prolific spell at Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg. Unsurprisingly, Sesko eventually stayed within the Red Bull system as he moved to Leipzig for around £20m. And he explained exactly why he chose to snub a move to England. "The thing is, I wasn't really involved in these kinds of conversations, but I think it was better to come here,' he said. "It was very important for me to go to a place that plays a similar style of football. I already knew what I had to do and didn't have to go through a whole learning process again." ‌ 'Happy to stay' Following a debut season in which he scored 18 goals in all competitions, Sesko's stock was high once again, with Arsenal earmarking as their top summer target. But he surprisingly decided to sign a new deal in Germany until 2029. ‌ Explaining why he was happy to commit his future to Leipzig, Sesko said: "I had a good first year at RB Leipzig and am incredibly happy to be here. Team, club, city, fans - the overall package is simply outstanding for me. The early contract extension was therefore the logical next step for me. 'Even though I didn't play or score as much in the first half of the season, this phase was very important for me and my development. I feel a lot of trust and appreciation throughout the club and that is crucial for being able to perform to my full potential. In the second half of the season in particular, I was able to give something back with my goals. 'We have a team with great potential and a balanced mix of young and experienced players. I'm really looking forward to taking the next steps with this team. We've already achieved a lot in my first season and often shown the amount of quality and outstanding football we can bring to the pitch. But there's still a lot more to be done and that's now our common goal." ‌ 'Anything can happen' Sesko continued his development with Leipzig during his second campaign at the club and scored a further 21 goals. And even more transfer interest was anticipated heading into the summer. Sesko however was unfazed and was determined to just control his performances on the pitch. He said: "I'm now focusing on the final games until the end of the season, and then we'll see what happens. ‌ 'Anything can happen. But, for now, I'm 100 percent focused on Leipzig, especially on these last two games." 'A club that suits me' Intriguingly, Sesko then hinted at the type of club that he would want to sign for should he depart Leipzig in the near future. And in a positive update for those of an Arsenal persuasion, he suggested that money wouldn't be the driving factor behind his next move, but instead a club that would maximise his considerable ability. Sesko said: 'Leipzig has given me a lot and continues to give me a lot every day. It's a great club to develop at. In the future, I want to play for a club that suits me, that brings out the best in me. That's the most important thing for me.' Man Utd 'world class genius' was teacher's pet but he took no s***

Fergie didn't suffer fools during his managerial career but had a soft spot for this player Former Man Utd No. 2 Rene Meulensteen has revealed how Paul Scholes was Sir Alex Ferguson 's 'teacher's pet'. And the Dutchman said it's simply because the England icon was 'a genius'. Scholes spent two trophy-laden decades at Old Trafford and even came out of retirement during a time of need for Ferguson. ‌ And asked who the biggest teacher's pet was during his time as assistant to Sir Alex, Meulensteen told Action Network: 'Paul Scholes because of the footballer he was, he was a genius, and I would rate him as one of the best world class midfielders ever. ‌ 'He was a genius and in training, if the bus was there and wasn't moving, he could hit it with a ball from 60 yards. 'I remember once, I was standing next to the manager with a cup of tea and Scholes wacked the ball from 40 yards. "I saw the ball coming and Scholes ran past me and said why did you move? 'We had a soft spot for him because everyone knew how important he was. "He was a no-nonsense player who took no s*** and was a really good trainer but also was at his best. 'He wasn't loud but when he said something, people would listen. Everyone respected him for how good of a player he was.' ‌ And despite Ferguson's reputation for giving players the famous "hairdryer" treatment, Meulensteen said he didn't see the legendary Scot lose the rag much. He said: "In all of my time as a first team coach, I can only remember when he raised his voice after West Ham when Nani got sent off towards the end of the season and basically, he did it to fire up all of the other players to say, you have to work double as hard to get us over the line. "He didn't want anyone to feel hard done by, but he was direct and tough with Nani but with a hidden message to all of the other players. ‌ "Other than that, I always felt he was spot on and never spoke for too long. He addressed things in two or three minutes at half time and that was it. "I was lucky to be there at a time when we won more than we lost so most of the time it was great. "If he did run into a defeat we didn't expect, even with a 6-1 defeat to Man City, you would think here we go. But the biggest thing that I took away from it was he was disappointed by the lack of players listening. "We got 1-0 down and Jonny Evans gets sent off and then go 3-0 down and we started going forward and Darren Fletcher scores to make it 3-1. It would've still been a hard struggle. Sir Alex was big on goal difference and losing 6-1, he said it cost us the league and it did by one goal."
