Pep Lijnders breaks Jurgen Klopp promise to join Pep Guardiola at Man City
Pep Lijnders left Liverpool back in 2024 following Jurgen Klopp's decision to exit Anfield and he has now reappeared somewhere very surprising after a false start in his first managerial job
Former Liverpool coach Pep Lijnders has gone against his word by completing a sensational move to Manchester City. The Dutchman left Anfield last summer as he followed the outgoing boss Jurgen Klopp out of the door.
Lijnders had enjoyed two spells on Merseyside having initially joined under Brendan Rodgers, while he was a trusted ally of Klopp. Following his exit, the 42-year-old very quickly found a new job having been appointed as Red Bull Salzburg manager.
But that move did not go according to plan as he was sacked after just 29 games. Lijnders has now found another new role after being appointed as one of Pep Guardiola's assistants at Man City.
He is one of two new coaches appointed at the Etihad, with James French being confirmed as a set-piece coach. Director of Football Hugo Viana said: 'We are all delighted that Pepijn and James have joined our senior coaching set-up.
'Pepijn and James have each amassed huge experience working in their individual roles over the past few years. Their talent, application, work ethic and all-round commitment are totally aligned with the values that underpin how Pep wants football to be played.
'And I have no doubt at all that both will prove to be very important assets for Pep and his coaching team as we prepare for the Club World Cup and then the 2025/26 season.'
Lijnders new job sees him go against the promise that he made to his ex-Liverpool boss Klopp. Upon leaving Anfield, he claimed that he would never be an assistant to anyone else and was solely focusing on his own managerial career.
He said: '10 years of the club and my boys don't know anything else, they are Scousers. I owe this club everything. They don't owe me anything, to be honest.

'It's 10 years full of dedication. I always said I will finish with Jurgen (Klopp); the moment I will not assist anyone else, that's the moment I will go and I will manage. That was always the case. So when we spoke, it was clear for me: OK, then I go and manage, and we end this project together [that] we started.
'It's not easy. My boys, my wife; my boys are two proper Scousers and their whole life they will be. Maybe posh ones! But still! I cannot say thank you enough to everybody involved.'
While Lijnders has bounced from the hotseat back to the assistant's chair, Klopp has also changed career direction. He is currently the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull and has hinted that he may never return to management.

‘We don't have much influence' – Tottenham star breaks ranks as he labels Ange Postecoglou sacking ‘strange'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MICKY VAN DE VEN has branded Tottenham's brutal axing of Ange Postecoglou as a 'strange decision'. Postecoglou was shown the door just 16 days after ending the club's 17-year trophy drought with Europa League glory in Bilbao. Yet the decision to axe the Aussie is understood to have left many of the players disappointed given the success they enjoyed in Europe. And while on international duty with the Netherlands, centre-back Van de Ven, 24, said: 'As players, we don't have much to say about that. 'Of course, he was the first coach in a long time to win a trophy and have success at Spurs. READ MORE ON TOTTENHAM SPUR-N THE CHANCE Spurs qualify for competition no Prem team has won - but may not play it 'So, if you look at it that way, it's definitely a strange decision. 'But it's a decision made by the club, and we don't have much say in that, so we'll see what happens next. 'We're of course seeing some rumpus about the Brentford manager likely becoming the next one. 'So yes, it's a decision by the club that we don't have much influence over.' BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Daniel Levy decided to wield the axe after an awful Premier League campaign which saw Spurs finish 17th. They lost a club-record 22 league games, which was the first time ever a Prem team has managed that and NOT been relegated. BBC star shares shock theory as to why Tottenham waited exactly 16 days after Europa League win to sack Ange Postecoglou And yet Postecoglou ended the club's silverware curse with their Europa win, which also got them back into the Champions League. Most of the Spurs squad have been effusive in their praise of Postecoglou on social media following his sacking and what he did for them as players and as people. Van de Ven, who missed much of the league campaign through injury, added: 'I think a lot of players had a good relationship with him. Ange Breaks Silence On Tottenham Sacking ANGE Postecoglou issued a statement just moments after being axed. It read: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. "The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. "Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. "That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. "There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. "We have also laid the foundations that means this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. "I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. "I know there were some difficult times, but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. "It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. "And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. "A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. 'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere.' 'And of course, like I said, he was the first coach in a long time to bring success to Spurs. 'That also shows he has a certain quality. It also means he has a winning mentality - one hundred per cent. 'So from that point of view, you'd naturally say it's strange that he was sacked. 'But of course, what we showed in the league was unacceptable. 'That, however, could have been due to several factors… it wouldn't have just been the coach.'

Can Bamford still lead the line in the Premier League?
Will Patrick Bamford still be an asset in the Premier League? The 31-year-old struggled for fitness last season and did not start a game in the Championship, coming off the bench 17 times without he boasts more top-flight experience than most in the Leeds squad and did score 17 Premier League goals in the 2021-22 season, the last time the Whites went week's Don't Go To Bed Just Yet podcast episode discusses whether he can still be useful for Daniel Farke."Most people listening would probably agree that a nine needs to be bought," said BBC Radio Leeds sports editor Jonny Buchan. "But if [Bamford] plays every pre-season game, has a decent one, plays in Dublin against AC Milan - he does have Premier League pedigree, something the club need and want," . "He's already got that and he scored 17 in the top flight before."Co-host and Kaiser Chiefs bassist Simon Rix can also see the value of keeping Bamford around."We've seen Bamford trying to get fit," added Rix. "He never gave me any hint he wants to leave Leeds. He knows he needs to get to the first day of pre-season ready to go because last season was a bit of a washout."He's back in credit with the fans. There is an argument that if you get Pat fit for 28 games in a Premier League season, he's very worth having. If someone else had him, you'd think he's a good striker for them to have."I just don't know if you can go into a very important season again relying on Bamford to be fit. It feels like a stretch."Listen to the full episode on BBC SoundsWhere do you stand on Bamford's future? Would you use him in the Premier League and, if so, what should his role be?Lets us know here.

Kyle Walker on verge of completing perfect England centurion XI – but Trent and Man City limbo put 100th cap at threat
Scroll down to see the full XI WALKING AMONG ICONS Kyle Walker on verge of completing perfect England centurion XI – but Trent and Man City limbo put 100th cap at threat Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) KYLE WALKER may have had a shocker against Senegal - but he is now just four caps away from completing England's perfect centurion XI. The Manchester City veteran struggled badly on his 96th cap in Tuesday's 3-1 friendly defeat at the City Ground, which was our first-ever loss to an African nation. And should he manage to dust himself down and convince the German of giving him the quartet needed to reach a century, he will be the eleventh player in Three Lions history to make it to triple figures. And in a coincidental twist of fate, if Walker does hit 100 then he would be the final piece in the jigsaw to complete a tonne-up team. In goal is our nation's record appearance-maker Peter Shilton on 125 games. In central defence, World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore (108) lines up alongside Billy Wright. The latter was a one-club man for Wolves just after the war and became the first player in world football to reach 100 caps for his country, ending on 105 in 1959. Playing out wide left in a 4-4-2 formation is the late Sir Bobby Charlton, who netted a stunning 49 goals in 106 caps, winning our only World Cup in 1966. 8 Bobby Moore would play centre-back after leading England to World Cup glory in 1966 Credit: Getty 8 Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard would partner each other in central midfield Credit: Getty 8 Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane lead the line Credit: Getty CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS On the right wing is ex-captain David Beckham, who The Sun exclusively revealed will be knighted in the King's upcoming Birthday Honours List, on 115. In the middle is Steven Gerrard (114) and Frank Lampard (106), trying to ignore the old debate of whether they could actually play together as a midfield pairing. Roy Keane slams 'LAZY' Kyle Walker for role in Senegal goal vs England as ITV star says 'can't make mistakes like that' Up top are our two greatest goalscorers - and arguably two best strikers, though Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker and Jimmy Greaves may have something to say about that. Harry Kane leads the line, having blasted an astonishing 73 goals in 107 caps, with his latest of each coming against the Senegalese. Wayne Rooney, whose goals record Kane surpassed two years ago, completes the awesome line-up thanks to 53 goals in 120 caps. Only three England bosses made it to 100 games in charge, including the first two, Walter Winterbottom (139), Sir Alf Ramsey (113) and, years later, Sir Gareth Southgate (102). Walker, 35, is desperate to make it to 100 caps. After winning his 80th in a 2-0 win over Malta in November 2023, he said: 'That's one of my big objectives. 'There are very few players that are in that bracket and have made it to the 100 club. 'If I can do that I'll be over the moon and delighted from when I first started in 2011 when I got my first call-up under (Fabio) Capello.' 8 Walker could complete his century before the year is out, with England having six World Cup qualifiers between September and October. But given the level of competition at full-back, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James and Tino Livramento, and Walker seemingly having no future at City, it is by no means a given he will do it. Walker also seems in limbo club-wise, with City not taking him to the Club World Cup and a return to AC Milan, where he spent the second half of the season on loan, looking off the cards. Tuchel feels the treble-winner's lack of recent action contributed to his dire display against the Senegalese where his touch was rusty and he looked uncharacteristically slow. But the former Chelsea boss remains a huge fan of Walker, which will give the full-back confidence his century dream can be realised. Asked why Walker deserved to play against Senegal in his post-match press conference, Tuchel said: 'Because it counts also what he did in the first camp. "His first two matches were good. He was a regular player at Milan and then broke his elbow. 'Once we saw him in camp, he trained at the highest level, I felt him very composed, very proud to be in the camp. "He took responsibility, he helped everyone out and pushed the standards and levels. I think he deserved to play. 'I see the lack of rhythm, clearly, the lack of rhythm in misjudgements and duels and anticipation, of course. 'That is also maybe the nature of a June camp and a player who does not have every minute in his legs lately and has struggled to come back because of injury and the contract situation when he was just on loan.' 8 Thomas Tuchel has backed Kyle Walker despite his poor performance against Senegal Credit: Alamy
