Dangerous Animals review – shark-bait thriller boasts a gnarly Jai Courtney
Sean Byrne's gonzo horror thriller premiered in the Directors' Fortnight section of this year's Cannes film festival, in the sidebar where Cannes traditionally finds a place in its heart for genre or offbeat fare. Yet despite this stamp of authority – and a lead turn from Jai Courtney that could best be described as 'gnarly' – I couldn't get behind this movie, which has a bargain-basement straight-to-streaming feel to it.
The scene is the Australian Gold Coast where surfers come to catch gigantic waves. Hassie Harrison (from TV's Yellowstone) plays a badass surfer named Zephyr, who travels around in her van as free as the wind sampling the most outrageous swells. She meets-cute with Moses (Josh Heuston), a nerdy guy who is very sweet and yet also kind of hot. When they part, Zephyr is to come fatefully into contact with the film's horrible villain, a beefy, bullish guy called Tucker, played by Courtney, who has a business taking attractive twentysomething tourists wearing only swimming costumes out on his boat, promising them an intimate encounter with sharks. But the unspeakable Tucker, a great shark enthusiast himself, has some pretty unusual ideas about the food he wants to offer to bring these creatures up to his boat.
It would be pure pedantry to start quibbling about the fact that Tucker's long-term interests would surely have attracted the attention of local police before now. And in the real world, stabbing a bad guy in the neck with an improvised knife will not generally cause him to just lie down as if asleep for 10 seconds, just long enough for you to get a head start with your final-girl escape-run away from him. This film has an audience, certainly, but it feels very derivative.
Dangerous Animals is in UK and Irish cinemas from 6 June and Australian cinemas from 12 June.

She shared a clip to her 52,000 followers showing off her newly purchased pair of Hermès Chypre sandals. The luxury footwear from the French fashion house features beige-coloured crocodile leather and a comfortable shearling lining. Elle, who has three young children, went on to admit there was some confusion over the price tag for the high end sandals, with the content creator revealing she was forced to fork out the pulse-raising sum after making a fatal error. Excited to show off her new purchase on the street, Elle said she immediately put the shoes on after making the decision to buy them and thinking they were about $10,000 less than the price tag. 'I definitely got very confused about the price,' she admitted. 'Which is my bad. 'I had heard, like, one number... so embarrassing. I went up to the checkout and I already had them on my feet because I was wearing them out of the store. 'She [the cashier] had packed up my other shoes and I was like "It's fine".' Elle has already shrugged off her fashion 'faux pas' admitting that she was 100 per cent behind her high end purchase. 'So, we're committing to the shoe, we're committing to the croc,' she said. 'I should've known... Hermès. But, aren't they gorge?' Elle repeated. Many of Elle's followers jumped in to the comments to empathise over her shopping error. 'The price. I'm dead,' one offered, to which Elle replied: 'I'm dead too.' Another, offered: 'I just looked them up and the price omg!!!!' Elle jumped in on that comment too, replying simply with five skull emojis. Others were quick to offer their low-key jealousy over Elle being able to afford such high-end footwear. 'May this life find me asap,' one follower pined. Elle recently made headlines after falling out with bestie and fellow TikTok star Cindy Killan, who goes by Regarding Cindy. The feud supposedly began a few months back when one of the women made serious allegations about being the victim of an assault, and then objected to her friend's reaction. While there's no way of confirming exactly what went down in this case of she-said-she-said, the fact the pair no longer follow each other on Instagram says it all. The story from our spies was that Elle shared a personal story over dinner at a restaurant and was disappointed with the response from Cindy. This was apparently the final straw for their friendship. At the time, Elle told her side of the story in an episode of her podcast 'Ellefluential'. She made reference to the row, but did not mention Cindy by name. She claimed she'd been assaulted at a restaurant and, as a result, her friends refused to dine there anymore.

Former AFL star Joel Macdonald has revealed why he turned to magic mushrooms after losing $200million following the dramatic collapse of his global tech business. MacDonald, 40, previously turned out for the Brisbane Lions and Melbourne Demons before turning his attention to the ill-fated GetSwift start-up in 2017. A luxurious lifestyle followed, before it all came crashing down, with a Federal Court judge stating the defender turned entrepreneur was focused on his bank balance, not 'his legal obligations as a director.' 'A few years ago I lost 200 was f---ing brutal,' Macdonald said in a recent YouTube interview. 'I was 30, I was on top of the world, I was one of Australia's youngest public company CEO's, first class (flights), best restaurants, young rich list and then BOOM! everything vanished.' Macdonald was ultimately was out of his depth, and in 2018 Get Swift's swift demise began. The Australian Securities Exchange suspended the company's trade over allegations Macdonald misled the market by overstating forecasts and failing to disclose the loss of major contracts. A record penalty of $15million followed in court, and Macdonald was also ordered to pay $1million in damages. Additionally, he was disqualified from managing corporations for 12 years. At the time, the court described GetSwift as a company that 'became a market darling because it adopted an unlawful public-relations-driven approach to corporate disclosure instigated and driven by those wielding power within the company.' Justice Michael Lee - who presided over the Brittany Higgins defamation trial - said Macdonald was trying to make money with 'little understanding or regard for his legal obligations as a director'. Macdonald admits his professional reputation was destroyed, and he turned to alcohol and anti-anxiety drugs as coping mechanisms. 'The rage I felt inside of me that it was all over was insane,' he said in the YouTube clip. 'There were dark moments when I just wanted to end it all. That was the only way I could see that the pain could go away....I don't wish that darkness on anyone.' A magic mushroom retreat, daily journaling, meditation and therapy followed, with Macdonald determined to become the best version of himself. And despite his wealth, Macdonald has conceded he wasn't happy at the height of his financial success - and now his focus is a freshly launched YouTube channel. 'If you're someone who's been beaten down, in a dark spot, rebuilding or just wants to have a massive crack on a global scale, then this channel is for you,' he says.

Since buying the property, Keith and Nicole installed an 18m swimming pool, new gym, full-sized tennis court and 250m grass mounds around the perimeter to block out prying eyes.
