Fraudsters posing as Jagannath Temple servitors extorted money from Puri visitors, arrested: Odisha Police
Twelve people were arrested in Odisha's Puri for allegedly extorting money from devotees visiting the Jagannath Temple by impersonating servitors of the 12th-century shrine. Police sources said they launched a special drive after receiving credible information about such extortion, and constituted a special team to arrest the culprits. 'These individuals were found to be regularly congregating on Badadanda (Grand Road) and Parikrama road (surrounding the temple), targeting devotees, particularly those from outside Odisha. They were impersonating sevayats (servitors) of the temple by donning traditional attire,' said a senior police officer in Puri. The police also seized 14 mobile phones and cash worth Rs 20,000 from the 12 accused. Puri, one of the four dhams according to Hinduism, draws thousands of devotees from across the country to the Jagannath Temple. The special police team observed these individuals engaging in the crime, including extortion, intimidation and violence, against pilgrims and devotees visiting the temple, police said. The accused would offer to guide devotees during their visit to the temple in exchange for money, and upon refusal, would resort to abusive language and threats, said a statement issued by the police. The accused were found to be posing as servitors and cheating devotees also by making false promises of performing puja and providing free darshan, while also collecting money forcibly without any authority to do so or providing a receipt, police said. 'The police team successfully apprehended these individuals after a chase, following which it was established that they had no affiliation with the rituals or traditions of Shri Jagannath Temple,' police said. The accused were arrested under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 111 (organised crime), 308 (extortion) and 61 (criminal conspiracy). The police also said they were committed to maintaining the sanctity and integrity of the Jagannath Temple and its traditions, and warned strict action would be taken against those who indulge in such nefarious activities.

Supreme Court Confirms Medha Patkar's Conviction In Defamation Case
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to interfere with the conviction of activist Medha Patkar in the 2021 criminal defamation case filed against her by VK Saxena -- the now Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. A Bench of Justices MM Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh was dealing with a special leave petition (SLP) filed by Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar, challenging a Delhi High Court order that had maintained her conviction in the matter. However, in a bit of relief to Ms Patkar, the Justice Sundresh-led Bench set aside the penalty imposed and directed that the supervision order would not be enforced. Earlier, on July 29, the Delhi High Court upheld Medha Patkar's conviction, rejecting her revision plea against a Saket court order that had dismissed her criminal appeal. A single-judge Bench of Justice Shalinder Kaur observed that Ms Patkar failed to point out any procedural defect that would amount to a miscarriage of justice in the case, noting that her conviction was based on due consideration of the evidence and applicable law. However, Justice Shalinder Kaur had modified the probation condition requiring her to appear before the trial court every three months, permitting her to appear virtually or be represented by an advocate. In 2001, Saxena filed two defamation suits against Ms Patkar -- one over allegedly derogatory remarks made during a television interview, and the other concerning a press statement. Senior Advocate Gajinder Kumar presented Saxena's case in the court. The legal tussle arose from an earlier suit filed by Ms Patkar in 2000, accusing Mr Saxena of publishing defamatory advertisements targeting her and the NBA. In July last year, Metropolitan Magistrate Raghav Sharma sentenced Ms Patkar to five months in jail and ordered her to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation to Saxena. On appeal, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Vishal Singh of the Saket Court upheld Ms Patkar's conviction but ordered her to be released on probation of good conduct for a period of one year, subject to prior deposit of a compensation amount of Rs 1 lakh, which will be released in favour of the complainant (Saxena). It had opined that an insensitive approach towards others' reputation and abuse of the right to free speech must be met with criminal sanction, adding that Ms Patkar, being herself a person of repute, must know the value of one's reputation and how defamation can result in loss of face and public esteem of the victim.

Sikkim's Non-Working Mothers To Get Rs 40,000 A Year, Announces Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Sunday kickstarted his mega outreach for women by distributing cheques of Rs 20,000 each to 32,000 non-working women, who are mothers, as part of a state-run scheme. The initiative was taken as Mr Tamang formally celebrated the first-ever Aama Samman Diwas, a day dedicated to honouring mothers for their sacrifices, strength, and contribution to the state. The celebration took place at the Rangpo Playground, where thousands of people, including mothers from across Sikkim, gathered to witness the occasion. Under the newly-launched initiative, all non-working women will receive a grant of Rs 40,000 every year. The amount will be given in two phases - Rs 20,000 in the first phase and another Rs 20,000 in the second phase. Along with the financial assistance, each mother will also receive a hot water bottle. The government will spend a total of Rs 128 crore for the program. Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister described the decision to start Aama Samman Diwas as both "personal and political". He said mothers had always played a key role in the social and political life of Sikkim, especially during difficult times. "Mothers have stood shoulder to shoulder with revolutionary comrades, sharing the same struggles and sacrifices," he said, adding that the journey of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) Party mirrored the courage and determination of mothers across the state. According to the Chief Minister, August 10 is a day close to him as it marks Jan Unmukti Diwas - the day he was released from what he called "unjust imprisonment." Recalling that period, he said that when he was in jail, it was often mothers who came to visit him - sometimes to scold him, sometimes to give advice, and often to give him courage to keep fighting. "Their words kept the revolutionary spirit alive in me," he said.
