STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Tage Thompson fired a sudden-death winner for Team USA as they claimed a thrilling victory over Switzerland in the final of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship on Sunday, their first gold medal at the tournament since 1933.
After impressing with their free-flowing attacking play earlier in the tournament, both teams engaged in an enthralling and bruising tactical battle that remained scoreless for the entire 60 minutes, prompting the overtime period that saw the teams reduced from five to three players on the ice, plus their goaltenders.
Swiss net-minder Leonardo Genoni played superbly throughout, but there was little he could do when Thompson broke forward and drove home the winning goal two minutes and two seconds into the overtime period to claim the victory.
Earlier on Sunday, co-hosts Sweden and Denmark met in the bronze-medal match with the Swedes running out 6-2 winners to take third place, and the Danes finishing fourth to secure their best-ever placing following their seismic defeat of Canada at the quarter-final stage on Thursday.

Sneaker brand On lifts targets on demand

Outperforming estimates: Ben Shelton with the winners trophy after capturing the ATP tennis singles title in Toronto.. The American star is one of the high-profile players to sport both On apparel and footwear in competitions. — Reuters ZURICH: On Holding AG is lifting its sales and earnings forecasts for the year after an unexpectedly strong second quarter that saw buyers in Europe and Asia snap up the Swiss sneaker-maker's high-priced footwear. The Roger Federer-backed company now sees revenue growing at least 31% on a constant currency basis this financial year, above analyst estimates and three percentage points higher than the previous target. It translates to net sales of 2.91 billion Swiss francs (US$3.6bil) at current spot rates, On said. Zurich-based On has become one of the top performers in the sneaker world, expanding from its core running shoes to other areas like tennis, training and apparel. The brand has grown rapidly since its 2010 founding, eating into market share of bigger players, including Nike Inc and Puma SE. On's shares are up nearly 16% in the past 12 months in New York, outperforming rivals including, Adidas AG. The company expects its gross profit margin to reach a range of 60.5% to 61% for the year, slightly up from its previous target despite US trade tariffs weighing on the sneaker sector. On cited better-than-expected growth at its expanding network of company-owned stores and its eCommerce channels. 'The energy everywhere is so high,' chief executive officer Martin Hoffmann said in an interview. 'We are in a really strong position and the whole ecosystem is supporting our aspirations.' On expects to open another five to 10 stores later this year, including one in its home of Zurich, another in Palo Alto, California, and a couple of locations in South Korea, Hoffmann said. Second quarter sales rose more than analysts expected to 749 million Swiss francs, up 38% from a year ago in constant currency terms. The gross profit margin reached 61.5%, also better than analysts' estimates. On has the most expensive running shoes in the industry on average and began edging prices higher in the United States last month, especially on lifestyle products. That approach hasn't scared off consumers so far, with strong early demand for On's new highly cushioned Cloudsurfer Max model which came to market in July, according to Hoffmann. Revenue in the second quarter jumped 43% in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and 101% in the Asia-Pacific region, significantly outperforming estimates. Growth of about 17% in the Americas was just shy of expectations. On's new store in Singapore generated some of the best opening-weekend business that the company has seen anywhere in the world, Hoffmann said. 'The demand there is so strong,' he said of the Asia-Pacific region. 'Much stronger than what we are willing to supply to the market.' — Bloomberg

Tough draw for returning Zii Jia in World Championships

PETALING JAYA: Men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia has been handed a tough draw in the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. Zii Jia, who is making his first competitive appearance since the All-England in March, will face a tricky opening match against South Korea's Jeon Hyeok-jin. The independent player will likely go up against China's world No. 4 Li Shifeng if he progresses to the second round based on the draw released on Wednesday (Aug 13). Zii Jia's fitness will be tested as he has been struggling with an ankle injury all year and has only competed in the Orleans Masters and All-England so far. The 27-year-old has slipped to No. 52 in the latest world rankings due to his long absence from tournaments. Meanwhile, world No. 25 Leong Jun Hao has an easier first match against Swiss player Tobias Kuenzi. A win will see Jun Hao take on either Japan's world No. 14 Kenta Nishimoto or Taiwan's world No. 28 Wang Tzu-wei for a place in the third round. In the women's singles, Goh Jin Wei has a difficult first-round match against China's Gao Fangjie, while K. Letshanaa will meet Hong Kong's Saloni Mehta.

Athletics-Pole vault king Duplantis to promote World Athletics Ultimate Championship

FILE PHOTO: Athletics - Mondo Classic - IFU Arena, Uppsala, Sweden - March 13, 2025 Sweden's Armand Duplantis in action during the pole vault gala Fredrik Persson/TT News Agency via REUTERS/File Photo (Reuters) -Pole vault sensation Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis said he was excited to be part of the growth of athletics after the two-time Olympic champion was handed an ambassadorial role for next year's inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship. World Athletics announced last year it would hold the global championship as a grand conclusion to the 2026 season. It will then take place every two years. In a statement, World Athletics said Duplantis had been named 'Star Athlete' for the event. The governing body added that the pole vaulter would be among the "key collaborators pursuing their cultural passions outside of athletics in music, fashion, art, on-screen, who will promote the new global season-ending championship." The event will take place in Budapest with a record $10 million in prize money on offer. Gold medallists will each receive $150,000 as part of what the sport's world governing body has described as the richest prize pot ever in the sport. Duplantis won his second world title in 2023 in Budapest. He also broke his own pole vault world record there for a 13th time on Tuesday, soaring 6.29 metres at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Swede said he was hoping to set a new world record during the Ultimate Championship. "We're always looking for new ways to make sure that the spotlight shines on athletics and the Ultimate will light up Budapest," the 25-year-old added. "I have great memories of winning world gold two years ago and remember the incredible atmosphere inside the stadium that night. It would be a dream to break the world record in front of a packed crowd next year. "This event is set to showcase our sport like never before and I can't wait to be a part of it." The championship is scheduled to take place over three evenings next year from September 11 to September 13. Each session will last less than three hours, in a bid to capture the attention of global television viewers. The programme will feature 26 individual events – 16 track and 10 field – and two relays, including the new mixed 4x100m. (Reporting by Aadi Nair in Bengaluru; Editing by Kate Mayberry)
