Ice hockey-US beat Switzerland to win world championship with sudden-death goal
STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Tage Thompson fired a sudden-death winner for Team USA as they claimed a thrilling victory over Switzerland in the final of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship on Sunday, their first gold medal at the tournament since 1933.
After impressing with their free-flowing attacking play earlier in the tournament, both teams engaged in an enthralling and bruising tactical battle that remained scoreless for the entire 60 minutes, prompting the overtime period that saw the teams reduced from five to three players on the ice, plus their goaltenders.
Swiss net-minder Leonardo Genoni played superbly throughout, but there was little he could do when Thompson broke forward and drove home the winning goal two minutes and two seconds into the overtime period to claim the victory.
Earlier on Sunday, co-hosts Sweden and Denmark met in the bronze-medal match with the Swedes running out 6-2 winners to take third place, and the Danes finishing fourth to secure their best-ever placing following their seismic defeat of Canada at the quarter-final stage on Thursday.

Tough draw for returning Zii Jia in World Championships
PETALING JAYA: Men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia has been handed a tough draw in the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. Zii Jia, who is making his first competitive appearance since the All-England in March, will face a tricky opening match against South Korea's Jeon Hyeok-jin. The independent player will likely go up against China's world No. 4 Li Shifeng if he progresses to the second round based on the draw released on Wednesday (Aug 13). Zii Jia's fitness will be tested as he has been struggling with an ankle injury all year and has only competed in the Orleans Masters and All-England so far. The 27-year-old has slipped to No. 52 in the latest world rankings due to his long absence from tournaments. World Athletics announced last year it would hold the global championship as a grand conclusion to the 2026 season. It will then take place every two years. In a statement, World Athletics said Duplantis had been named 'Star Athlete' for the event. The governing body added that the pole vaulter would be among the "key collaborators pursuing their cultural passions outside of athletics in music, fashion, art, on-screen, who will promote the new global season-ending championship." The event will take place in Budapest with a record $10 million in prize money on offer. Gold medallists will each receive $150,000 as part of what the sport's world governing body has described as the richest prize pot ever in the sport. Duplantis won his second world title in 2023 in Budapest. He also broke his own pole vault world record there for a 13th time on Tuesday, soaring 6.29 metres at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Swede said he was hoping to set a new world record during the Ultimate Championship. "We're always looking for new ways to make sure that the spotlight shines on athletics and the Ultimate will light up Budapest," the 25-year-old added. "I have great memories of winning world gold two years ago and remember the incredible atmosphere inside the stadium that night. It would be a dream to break the world record in front of a packed crowd next year. "This event is set to showcase our sport like never before and I can't wait to be a part of it." The championship is scheduled to take place over three evenings next year from September 11 to September 13.
