Daniel Wiffen withdraws from World Aquatics Championships in Singapore
"Unfortunately, Daniel Wiffen has had to withdraw, on medical grounds and due to the ongoing effects of appendicitis he dealt with in June, from the remainder of competition at the World Aquatics," Swim Ireland confirmed..
Wiffen led the field through the opening 350 metres of the 800m final on Wednesday, but faded in the latter half to come home in 7:58.56, nearly 14 seconds off his personal best. The 24-year-old later revealed he had been struggling with stomach issues during the race.
"Obviously not my best showing, from last year winning the Olympics to coming eighth in the final,' Wiffen said after the race.
"But honestly, I'm happy to be in the final, still progressing, still getting those nerves up. You know, that's what sport's about, trying to get myself uncomfortable, and I was definitely uncomfortable in that race.
"I'm pretty sure I was leading at one point and then I got to 400m and then my stomach was in pieces but, you know, I'm happy to be in the final, I'm happy to represent Ireland again in a final.''

Katie Taylor's father Pete confirms her relationship status after reconciliation
Pete Taylor has confirmed that his daughter Katie is now married. It follows speculation that the boxing superstar had been wed, having been photographed wearing a ring on her left hand in the build-up to her trilogy win over Amanda Serrano last month. "Ever since the fight there with Katie, people are seeing the two of us back together, even some of the s*** you hear about that," Pete told James English on his podcast 'Anything Goes'. "I was reading somewhere that Katie Taylor never got married because of her father, he wouldn't let married, you know, and I'm thinking, 'where are you getting this s*** from?'". Taylor senior also opened up to English about the family rift that saw Katie remove him from her coaching team ahead of the Rio Olympics in 2016 - and after the high of winning gold at London 2012 "I split with Katie's ma two years, maybe a year after the Olympics," Taylor said. "Katie's really into her faith as well and I just remember Katie coming down to the boxing club and she says, 'I just don't want you in the corner, you and ma are not together'. "I'm married now to Karen, and Karen's the same age as Katie and everybody was saying Pete's turned around for Katie's best friend, but they didn't even know each other. For me it's an insult, it sounds like 'Katie's been best friends with this girl since her childhood, you've bleedin' groomed her'. But she didn't know her, but that grows legs then. Just rumours and rumours and rumours. "She has such morals, she has such faith and thinks that when you're married you should be together for life. It killed me now, but I had to respect it because she did a documentary after and said, 'when I went training it was like I was fighting with only one hand because my da wasn't there'. She knew what the consequences would be, she lost in the Olympics in 2016 in Rio." Pete explained that it was a tough time and claimed he had been portrayed as a villain by the Irish media. "We weren't really speaking," he said of his relationship with Katie around the Rio Games. "It was tough for both of us but that's life. "Because we were always together it was a big thing in the newspapers, you'd think I was the only person who ever split up a marriage and when Katie got beaten I was painted as the villain. It made me a pure villain in Ireland but that's life, they used to make up stories about me on a bad news day. It was tough at the time." He also described the build-up and contests at London 2012 as a very pressurised time. "She's not lost in 17 major competitions or something, and if we silver medal it would have been a disappointment for everybody in Ireland, and Ireland was going through a bad time," he recalled. "There was the financial crash in Ireland and everybody was depressed and I felt the hopes of Ireland were on the shoulders of the two of us. And there's banners all over Dublin saying Katie Taylor, gold medal London, she'll win a gold medal. Jesus, some pressure it was. "It was not enjoyable. The Olympics was not one bit enjoyable - it was just pressure. You know, even after Katie won the goal, for me, it was just relief." Intriguing Katie Taylor claim that could have changed her boxing destiny
Pete Taylor says that his daughter Katie would not have turned pro if he had been in her corner in Rio. The pair were publicly reunited ahead of the sell-out bout at Madison Square Garden, but they had been back in contact for some time after Katie stopped working with her dad after he split from her mother. He revealed how they reunited in the gym in the States, when Katie started working towards the trilogy fight, for the first time in around a decade. "Katie said, 'will you come over and do a bit of training with me', I said I can come over at the weekend and we were training away, it was great, it was crazy it was," he recalled. "It was just like we never stopped, you've got to click with someone with pads and straight away it was working. We had a good week, and then she booked to come over to Amsterdam to train. "It messed up Serrano's head as well a bit, I think. We get on great and I think I know what she's thinking before she does half the time. "If you look back if things didn't happen the way they did with her ma, myself, relationships, she wouldn't be where she is so everything happened for the right reasons." Taylor senior had fostered Katie's talent in the boxing ring from the start, guiding her true a trailblazing amateur career that saw her win five World Championships. But their ultra-successful partnership ended in the wake of the London 2012 Olympics, when Katie won gold, after her father left home. "If she had won the gold in 2016 she wouldn't have turned pro because I would never have had her turn professional, I didn't want her to turn professional ever," he told James English's 'Anything Goes' podcast. "We were only talking about this last month when I was over there, she wouldn't have turned pro and she wouldn't be where she is now. So look, maybe it worked out right for her." There were a couple of occasions when he was coaching another boxer on the same card that Katie was fighting on, but he would leave the venue after his own boxer was finished. "It was tough," he admitted. "I don't want Katie's fights as a pro (live), I only watch the fight after I know she's won. "Twice we were on the same card as Katie, and once my lad boxed I left, I was gone. I've no control in the fight so I don't watch it. "Ross (Enamait, her coach) could be shouting something into Katie and I could shout in the opposite, it would be a head melt for him because she'd recognise my voice. "I wasn't in the corner for the third Serrano fight, I watched it at home but I only watched it after the fight was over. The first two fights I would have been saying to her, 'What are you doing, move your legs'." He did make the point to Katie in the run-up to the third showdown and it was a different kind of contest, with the Bray bomber winning comfortably after the rivals went to war in the first two clashes. "I saw her face after the first one because we Face Timed each other, and this was why I didn't want her to go into pro boxing," admitted Pete. "There's no padding, and the state of the faces afterwards, especially when it's your daughter. Even the second fight with the clash of heads, Katie's jaw was out there." Asked if he thinks she will now retire, Pete replied: "She won it so easy, is she going to retire, is she going to think, 'that was a great performance, I'm going to carry on'. Look, she'll make her own mind up. "It's very difficult, you've got to not listen to what anyone else is saying and just do what you want to do."
