Vikings lose key member of training staff to the Carolina Panthers

USA Today18-02-2025
Teams have been actively trying to poach the Minnesota Vikings' staff after the team went 14-3 in 2024. The Jacksonville Jaguars hired assistant quarterbacks coach Grant Udinski as their offensive coordinator in 2025. Now, the Vikings will need to replace their Director of Player Performance.
On Monday, Joe Person, who covers the Carolina Panthers for The Athletic, announced the Panthers hired Josh Hingst, who had served as the Vikings' Director of Player Performance from 2021-24.
Hingst had worked for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-20, helping them win Super Bowl LII following the 2017 season. While there, Hingst significantly implemented one of the league's first data-driven training systems.
In Carolina, Hingst will be the Panthers' strength and conditioning coach. He replaces Jeremy Scott, who joined the Panthers in 2020 when Matt Rhule took over as head coach.
The Vikings now must replace a member who survived the coaching change from Mike Zimmer to Kevin O'Connell. This regime relies heavily on data and analytics, so finding someone fit for the role and embracing that approach to player performance could be more difficult than it would have been ten years ago.

Why did Anthony Barr retire from the NFL? Here's what we know.

Anthony Barr has had a terrific NFL career as a linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys over a 10-year career. He totaled 371 solo tackles in that span and made four Pro Bowls. And now, the 33-year-old and UCLA alum will be calling it a career according to a post from his foundation, Raise the Barr: "After an amazing ten-year career, Anthony Barr will officially retire from the NFL in just a few weeks. From the start, he used his platform not just to play, but to build Raise The Barr, turning his success on the field into real impact for families like his." What's not listed in that post (see below) is why he retired. But if we're guessing, 10 years of punishing tackles and physicality can take its toll on a 33-year-old. He only played four games in 2023 and last played all 16 contests in 2017. What is Anthony Barr's contract this year? It was a one-year deal for $1.165 million. What was Anthony Barr's net worth? Per Over The Cap, he earned over $63 million.

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy will play in 1st preseason game, coach Kevin O'Connell says

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy will play in Saturday's preseason opener, head coach Kevin O'Connell said, the young passer's first on-field action since an injury ended his rookie year before it began. O'Connell didn't say how many snaps McCarthy will get against the Houston Texans, but did indicate he likely won't see much preseason playing time beyond the first game. "You'd love to play him as much as possible, but I think with those two days of joint practice, the guys that — the type of repetition that the other guys on the offense will get from a physicality and workload standpoint, we'll more than likely use those two days as our real days," O'Connell said. The Vikings will welcome the New England Patriots to Eagan for their final two open practices on Aug. 13 and 14. O'Connell said that will likely take the place of any further preseason reps for McCarthy, but the plan could change. "If we need to get a little more work, we will, and then we'll assess that final preseason game when it comes," he said. It's common for starters to see limited preseason action, especially at the game's most important position. And with McCarthy's season-ending injury last year coming during a preseason game, it's probably prudent for the Vikings to be judicious with his snaps. That will leave plenty of playing time for the other three quarterbacks on the roster: Sam Howell, Brett Rypien and Max Brosmer. O'Connell made it sound like he wants an extended look at Howell in particular. "I think he's really flashed his arm talent," the coach said. "What I'm looking for is just consistency." As he has all offseason, O'Connell espoused confidence in his first-year starter. Saturday's game will give fans a glimpse of how warranted that confidence is. "I'm fired up about [McCarthy] and I," O'Connell said, "the dynamic we have, and how we're kind of both growing together on a daily basis, looking towards what this finished product of training camp looks like as we attack the season together." The Vikings take on the Texans at 3 p.m. Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
