Govt school tries U-shape seating to improve student engagement
Jaipur: A govt English medium school in Ravidas Nagar, Sriganganagar, has changed the seating pattern in classrooms from traditional rows to U-shape seating to ensure that each child feels seen and heard by the teacher. Anita Rani, the school principal, said that since implementing the new system, attentiveness among school children has increased. The decision was inspired by methods followed in govt schools of Tamil Nadu, she said. "I joined the school as principal in this academic session and thought that we should start something new to increase students' engagement in the class. That is when I decided to change the seating pattern to U-shape and reorganised the furniture accordingly. The idea was to remove the gap between backbenchers or front seaters and ensure that the teacher pays attention to all students equally," Rani said. She added that the initiative started on July 25, and since then, the school administration has noticed that the attendance of students improved, with 100% attendance on most days. In this upper primary school, a total of 98 students are enrolled at present, and applications are still being received for admission this year."With the good response, we are working to start classes 9 and 10, too. It has already been approved by the govt," the principal said. Officials said the school education department will write to school heads to implement this system in all schools where there is sufficient furniture for the enrolled students. "We will write to all school heads to either follow this or start new initiatives which will help bring all students on the same platform. Not all schools have sufficient furniture as enrolment is increasing, but it will be provided by the department to implement such innovative methods," said an official from the education directorate. School adds creative touch to dolphin conservation pledge
Mangaluru: The Govt High School, Badaga Yekkar, has gone beyond merely following a directive to administer a pledge on dolphin conservation. It has turned the exercise into a full-fledged awareness campaign. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As part of the govt's initiative, schools were asked to make students take a pledge on dolphin protection. However, English teacher Anith Kumar said the team wanted to give it more depth. "As soon as we received the order, we began researching dolphins in India and realised how vital their conservation is. One striking fact was that dolphins thrive only in clean water, which explains why they are found in the Brahmaputra and Ganga. However, over the years with increasing pollution, the species are facing a threat," he noted. The school prepared a multimedia presentation with videos, which teacher Ramya, coordinator of Vanasiri Eco Club, presented the same to the students. The pledge focused on respecting and protecting dolphins and their habitats, avoiding pollution of water bodies, rejecting activities that exploit these mammals, and actively supporting conservation. Students also learnt about Project Dolphin, launched on Aug 15, 2020, which aims to conserve marine and riverine dolphins through habitat protection, research, and community awareness, he said. To make the learning interactive, the school organised a drawing competition on Indian dolphins, encouraging children to explore the species further. The event held recently saw participation from about 75 students.
