Another pro-Russian politician stopped from leaving Moldova

CHISINAU (Reuters) - Police prevented another pro-Russian opposition politician from leaving ex-Soviet Moldova on Thursday as the detention of the leader of the country's pro-Russian Gagauz ethnic minority further strained relations with Moscow.
Eugenia Gutul, the leader, or bashkan, of Gagauzia, has been in detention since being stopped at the airport on Tuesday in connection with a corruption probe. On Thursday, she urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to help secure her release.

Maia Sandu.
Two pro-Russian parliamentarians, also charged with corruption, have disappeared in the past week.
All those under suspicion or facing charges are associates of fugitive pro-Russian business magnate Ilan Shor, sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with the 2014-2015 disappearance of $1 billion from the Moldovan banking system.
Alexei Lungu, a member of the pro-Russian opposition, was stopped at Chisinau airport on Thursday and told he could not leave the country. He told Reuters the action amounted to "revenge and political terror."
"We will fight - both openly and lawfully. Neither intimidation nor blackmail will stop us," he said.
Gagauzia, a region of 140,000 people in the south of Moldova, is dominated by ethnic Turks who favour close ties with Russia, adhere to Orthodox Christianity and have had uneasy relations with central authorities since Moldovan independence in 1991.
In her appeal, Gagauz leader Gutul asked Putin "to use the entire arsenal of diplomatic, political and legal means to put pressure on Moldovan authorities to secure an immediate end to political repression and my rapid release." She issued a similar appeal to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.
A Chisinau court postponed until Friday a decision on a prosecution request to extend her 72-hour detention.
Gutul is due to be sentenced soon on charges of corruption and financing a political bloc led by Shor from exile in Russia.
Sandu is spearheading a drive to secure European Union membership for Moldova, one of Europe's poorest countries, and has never recognised Gutul's 2023 election as bashkan.
The president has denounced Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which is on Moldova's eastern border, and has accused the Kremlin of trying to unseat her.
Gutul's detention follows the unexplained disappearance last week of pro-Russian parliamentarian Alexandr Nesterovschi on the day he was sentenced to 12 years in prison on similar corruption charges. A second lawmaker, Irina Lozovan, awaiting a verdict on similar charges, has also disappeared.
Moldovan authorities accuse Shor of funnelling money into the country illegally with the aim of using his banned "Victory" bloc to secure the election of pro-Russian lawmakers in a parliamentary poll later this year.

Deputies with the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Darriana Burton, 28, in New Orleans on June 9, according to Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill's office. The attorney general's office said Burton was taken into custody without incident. Agents with the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service coordinated to arrest Burton and obtained an arrest warrant on May 27. The attorney general's office said Burton was wanted in connection with the escape of 10 inmates, who fled the Orleans Parish jail on May 16. Authorities accused Burton of aiding in Groves' escape. She faces a felony charge of conspiracy to commit simple escape and was taken into custody in the Plaquemines Parish jail, according to the attorney general's office. "Burton is believed to be the current girlfriend of Derrick Groves," the attorney general's office said in a statement. "We have confirmed they were in an on-again, off-again relationship for three years." From August 2022 to March 2023, Burton was employed at the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, according to the attorney general's office. Burton was fired from her job in 2023 after she was arrested for allegedly bringing contraband into the jail and malfeasance in office. The charges were dropped by the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office in October 2024, the attorney general's office said. 'We will continue to pursue anyone and everyone who has aided and abetted these criminals. We will find you, arrest you, and prosecute you to the full extent of the law," Murrill said in a statement. "I'd like to thank the US Marshals Service for executing our warrant for this woman. 'Get it together': Fear and anger in New Orleans turn to calls for action over jail escape How did the inmates escape? Ten inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish jail in the early morning of May 16. Authorities previously said that the group escaped through a hole in a cell wall after ripping away a toilet and sink unit. Three were recaptured by the end of the same day, and five more were caught in the weeks after. Two of them were found over 300 miles away in Huntsville, Texas, and led authorities there on a high-speed chase before they were apprehended. Antoine Massey, 32, and Groves, 27, are the two inmates still at large. Massey has made national headlines in recent weeks after two videos posted on social media showed a man purporting to be the escapee. State and local authorities said they were aware of the videos and were reviewing them. Authorities previously announced awards of up to $20,000 per inmate for information leading to their arrests. Authorities are currently offering $50,000 for tips leading to the arrest of Massey and Groves. Groves was convicted of two charges of second-degree murder and two charges of attempted second-degree murder in October in connection with a shooting during Mardi Gras in 2018. Groves also has been awaiting sentencing on a manslaughter charge since October. Massey is charged with domestic abuse involving strangulation and theft of a motor vehicle, according to Orleans Parish records. There also is a warrant for his arrest in St. Tammany Parish for second-degree rape, second-degree kidnapping, domestic abuse involving strangulation and violation of a protective order involving battery stemming from an incident in November, the parish's sheriff's office said. All were booked into the Plaquemines Parish jail, according to Louisiana State Police spokesperson Sergeant Kate Stegall. White was arrested for helping Massey while the others were accused of aiding 26-year-old escapee, Lenton Vanburen Jr. On May 23, Murrill announced that Trevon Williams, 23, was charged with 10 counts of being a principal to simple escape. Williams was already incarcerated at the New Orleans jail on unrelated charges. Weber was one of four people questioned after investigators "combed through surveillance footage, connecting crucial dots in the search," police said. Pro-Ukrainian partisans destroy car used by Russian drone operators in occupied Melitopol, Atesh claims
A car used by drone operators in the Russian 64th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade was destroyed by the Atesh partisan group in occupied Melitopol overnight on June 10, the group claimed. The Atesh group says they destroyed a military vehicle which contained a "mobile electronic warfare system," claiming they temporarily "paralyzed" the work of the Russian unit. "The resistance in southern Ukraine is alive and we are increasing the pressure every day," the Atesh group said in a post to Telegram. Meanwhile, Russia conducted a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv and Odesa. One was killed, and seven were injured in both cities. In Odesa, a medical facility and maternity hospital were damaged in the Russian attack. "An incendiary mixture was used, which engulfed the car in a matter of seconds and completely destroyed it," Atesh said. The group claims they destroyed the car while it was left unguarded after studying the location and habits of the Russian crew. "This vehicle was used for covert movement and tactical missions in the south of Ukraine. Now the enemy is left without critical transport," the Atesh group said. The Kyiv Independent could not verify the group's claims. The Atesh partisan group regularly conducts sabotage attacks in Russia and Ukraine's Russian-occupied territories. Russia strikes Kyiv and Odesa with aerial attacks, at least two people wounded, officials say
Russia launched a drone attack on Kyiv overnight into Tuesday, with air raid sirens blaring for hours and residents hearing regular explosions, and local officials reporting damage to residential buildings and at least two people wounded. Air raid sirens have been blasting since midnight local time in the capital and air defense systems have been working non-stop in the city center, a CNN producer said. A large number of unmanned aerial vehicles are still reaching the capital, said Kyiv mayor Vitaliy Klitschko in a post on Telegram. At least two people have been wounded so far in the capital, Klitschko added. Preliminary damage was reported in the Desnianskyi, Obolonskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city military administration. In the southern port city of Odesa, Russian attacks struck a maternity ward, according to Andriy Yermak, Chief of Presidential Staff. A residential building was also hit, according to Odesa mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov, adding at least one person was killed based on preliminary reports. The overnight attacks follow Russia's biggest drone strike on Ukraine on Monday, where Russia fired 479 UAVs at Ukraine in an overnight aerial assault, surpassing the highest number of drones Moscow has launched in a single day for the second consecutive weekend.
