JI launches tree-plantation drive
The initiative was formally launched on Wednesday in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town, where JI Karachi Chief, Monem Zafar, along with Town Chairman Dr Fawad planted the first sapling of the campaign.
Speaking to the media, Zafar emphasised that the campaign was part of a broader climate strategy led by JI to counter rising temperatures, urban heat, and deteriorating air quality in the city. 'Karachi was once known for its 'cold roads' lined with trees,' he recalled. 'Now, in many areas, we're left with nothing but concrete jungle. It is our responsibility to restore greenery and bring back Karachi's lost environment.'
He said that the drive would be implemented across all towns under the supervision of local chairmen and union councils to ensure meaningful and sustained impact.
Criticizing the Sindh government for what he termed as 'environmental negligence,' the JI leader questioned the fate of 50,000 trees promised by the provincial administration. 'Where is the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency? What happened to their commitments?'
He also slammed the government for chopping down trees during Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects without adequate re-plantation efforts. 'Development should not come at the cost of ecological collapse.'
Highlighting the party's recent contributions, Monem Zafar said that JI had restored over 155 public parks during the past two years and introduced innovative ideas such as roadside jungles, urban forests, and rainwater harvesting systems to conserve natural resources.
The JI leader said Karachi deserves at least Rs500 billion for its development, not just Rs20 billion. We demand a minimum of Rs2 billion for each of the city's towns.
He expressed concern over the large number of unsafe structures in the megacity, especially in District South. 'Out of 749 buildings declared dangerous by the Sindh Building Control Authority, 400 are in District South alone. Who allowed 8-storey buildings on 8-yard plots,' he questioned.
Zafar pointed out that while the World Health Organisation recommends one tree for every seven individuals. He said Karachi's ratio is shockingly low—estimated at one tree for every 1,000 people. 'This is a wake-up call. The megacity ranks 170 out of 173 in the global livability index. If we don't act now, future generations will suffer even more.'

'The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is deeply saddened by the Tirah incident, the government has announced aid of Rs10 million for the families of the deceased and Rs2.5 million for the injured. Vice chief of naval staff confers military awards upon Pakistan Navy personnel
Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami on Monday conferred various military awards upon Pakistan Navy personnel, including Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military), Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Military), Tamgha-e-Basalat and Tamgha-e-Khidmat (Military). The vice chief of the naval staff graced the Pakistan Navy Investiture Ceremony (North) in Islamabad as the chief guest. On this occasion, Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) was awarded to Commodore Syed Muhammad Abbas Naqvi, Commodore Aamer Rasheed Malik, Commodore Kashif Elahi, Commodore Muhammad Afsar Khan, Commodore Rao Ahmed Imran Anwar, Commodore Dr Anwar Hussain, Commodore Shahid Ahmed, Commodore Raja Muhammad Nasir, Commodore Jawad Haider Khawaja, Commodore Muhammad Zahid Zaheer, Captain Jawad Malik PN and Captain Atif Aman Chughtai PN, the Director General Public Relations (DGPR) – Navy said. TTP terrorist 'behind Chinese engineers attack' killed in Karachi operation
Listen to article Three terrorists from banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), including one allegedly involved in last year's attack on Chinese engineers, were killed in a joint operation by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and intelligence agencies in Karachi's Manghopir area late Sunday night. On 5 November 2024, a private security guard at a textile mill in Karachi opened fire and seriously injured two Chinese nationals. According to police, deceased suspect, identified as Zafran, had a Rs20 million bounty on him and was accused of involvement in the 2024 Liberty Textile attack targetting Chinese nationals. He was also linked to the Karachi Police Office (KPO) assault. He emphasised that the protection of Chinese nationals remained a top priority, especially given ongoing China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, vital to the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Police said terrorists opened fire when they spotted them approaching, triggering a gunfight that lasted over an hour. All three suspected terrorists were killed, said police, adding that a fully assembled suicide jacket, three grenades, a Kalashnikov rifle, two pistols and a large cache of ammunition were recovered from the site. Moreover, police found a diary which listed two to three high-value prospective targets. The second deceased suspect was identified as Qudratullah and the third's identity is yet to be confirmed. The CTD chief said the three slain suspected terrorists belonged to TTP cell dispatched from Afghanistan. Intelligence officials had been surveilling the cell for several days, he added. Khattab further added that the TTP cell in question is believed to have five members but only three were present at the safehouse during the raid. A search operation in the area and further investigation are under way.
