Riots erupt in Salford as 60 masked youths burn vehicles and hurl bricks at police with 'tensions high'
Riots erupted in Salford on Wednesday after a group of youths assaulted a police officer and set vehicles on fire.
Police warned of "serious disorder" after 60 teenagers were reported terrorising an area of the city shortly after 1.30pm.
There were reports of cars being set alight and stolen, motorbikes being used, and bricks being thrown at police during the disturbance on Lower Broughton Road.
The windscreen of a police vehicle was smashed, Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.
Riot police attended the scene and a dispersal order was put in place until 2pm on Thursday, a spokesman for the force added.

A 16-year-old girl has since been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and remains in custody.
Footage shared online, supposedly from the scene, depicts a supermini performing a handbrake turn while driving through neighbourhood gardens.
A witness told the Manchester Evening News: "There is a Fiat 500 which has been completely smashed in. Its windows have been stoved in.
"The police are here, but they're circling around at the moment. At a rough guess I'd say there are about 50-60 people hanging about, but a lot of residents are also coming out."

Superintendent Marcus Noden, from GMP, said: 'This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated and we take robust and appropriate action.'
He added: 'A large number of officers will be remaining in the area overnight as a precaution.
'We are aware of speculation online that this incident is linked to immigration, this is categorically incorrect.
'There are currently no ongoing incidents in the area, however, tensions remain heightened, and we have robust plans in place, should we need to respond to any further incidents.
''I would also like to thank members of the public for their patience and support while we continue to deal with this incident.'

Tragedy as man found dead near Greater Manchester playing field
A man was tragically found dead near a playing field in Greater Manchester. Officers were called out to the scene on Green Lane in Horwich, near Bolton, on Wednesday morning (June 11). Greater Manchester Police 'ready for anything' ahead of Parklife weekend
With Parklife festival now rapidly bearing down on Heaton Park, preparations are entering their final stages. But while stages are set up, food stands and bars take deliveries, and soundchecks begin more work is going on in the background to keep the festival safe. We spoke with representatives from Greater Manchester Police about some of their work to ensure the weekend goes as smoothly and safely as possible, and they tell us they're "ready for anything". "GMP are really proud to support Parklife, we've been doing it for many years," he said. "We work really closely with the event organiser, the local authority, Transport for Greater Manchester to make sure it's a safe and secure festival. "Our planning is particular, it's happened over several months and weeks leading up to this. We all work together to try and make it the best festival it can be so those people coming here feel really safe. "We have close contact with people travelling by public transport and the road network to make sure it's as seamless as possible." He added: "Every year is different, we never rest on our laurels, last year we had thunder and lightning which paused the festival for a number of hours, but we're ready for anything. "We test our plans carefully. We're looking forward to it. We want people to come and have a good time and be safe." He is joined by Superintendent Phil Spurgeon who is the "silver" commander for the weekend, meaning he will be overseeing the more on the ground operations. "We essentially deliver a massive public safety operation in conjunction with the event organisers and partners," he said. "We have hundreds of staff working in unique roles just roles just to make sure that we are safe. "We also have significant investment in trying to minimise disruption. Having 60,000 mostly young people on and off site can present some challenges." Superintendent Spurgeon has probably been to Parklife more times than some regular attendees, telling us that this is his tenth time at the festival including six "on the ground" and four overseeing. He said: "I just think it's such a good event for Manchester. It's an important part of our cultural offering for young people especially, and it's important for the economy of the region."

Girl, 16, charged with assaulting police amid unrest
A 16-year-old girl has been charged with assaulting a police officer amid disorder in Salford that saw cars set on fire and bricks being hurled. About 50 to 60 people gathered during the disturbance in the city's Lower Broughton Road at about 13:30 BST, Greater Manchester Police said. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of possessing a weapon, while two others were held on suspicion of drugs offences and theft. The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with assaulting an emergency worker and has been bailed to appear in court at a later date. The force said cars were stolen and set on fire, motorbikes were being ridden erratically and bricks were thrown at officers, while wheelie bins and cars were used to block off the road. A police vehicle's windscreen was smashed, it added. A video shared on social media appeared to show a Fiat 500 reversing at speed along the road with its boot open, as another car followed it. Supt Marcus Noden said there had been "no further incidents" since the unrest earlier but officers had "robust plans in place should any further incidents arise in the area".
