Kuwait crown prince urges global action to end Israeli aggression

by FARAH SOLHI
THE international community must uphold its legal and moral responsibilities and exert the necessary pressure to stop the aggression of Israel occupation on Palestinians, to ensure international protection for the civilians, said Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
Leading the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) delegation at the second ASEAN-GCC Summit today, he reaffirmed the bloc's position on Palestinian cause and supports the right of Palestinian to establish an independent state.
'We also renew our call for the resumption of a serious and credible peace process based on international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. We commend ASEAN's position in supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and defending their just cause.
'Regarding the situation in Syria, the GCC welcomes the positive developments on the ground and affirms support for all efforts aimed at achieving security and stability, preserving Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and enabling the Syrian people to regain safety and prosperity,' he said in his opening remarks delivered at the summit this morning on behalf of Amir of the State of Kuwait Shaikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah.
Apart from the continuing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Sheikh Sabah Khaled said the significance of the ASEAN-GCC Summit represents the inter-bloc foundational station toward strengthening cooperation between both sides.
He added that it is a reflection of the blocs' historical relations and a renewal of their collective commitment to build a strategic partnership based on shared interests and the principles of international law, while promoting inclusive and sustainable development for the peoples
'The first Riyadh Summit (in Saudi Arabia) between both sides, held on Oct 20, 2023, was a successful beginning to map out a comprehensive cooperation framework.
'We aim to build upon this momentum, guided by the ASEAN-GCC Strategic Partnership Framework 2024-2028, which serves as a roadmap for institutionalising this partnership and transforming it into practical mechanisms capable of achieving tangible progress.
'In the political and security domains, we reaffirm our commitment to constructive dialogue, mutual understanding, respect for sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs — all essential for enhancing regional and international stability,' he said.
Sheikh Sabah Khaled also called for strengthening cooperation in combating terrorism, extremism and organised crime, thud enhancing intelligence sharing and improving crisis response capabilities.
The GCC also proposed to designate 2026 as the Year of Cultural Convergence between the GCC and ASEAN, with cultural weeks, forums and art exhibitions to be held.
'Additionally, we propose celebrating ASEAN Day in a GCC country and GCC Cultural Day in an ASEAN country, to fulfil our shared cultural aspirations.
'We also call for joint youth and women empowerment initiatives in the next action plan, through training programmes, skill-building and entrepreneurship projects that reflect the ambitions of the new generations in our two regions,' he said.
Sheikh Sabah Khaled stressed that the true success of the summit is not measured solely by declarations, but by the implementation of initiatives and the translation of shared aspirations into concrete actions.
On behalf of GCC, he proposed the establishment of a high-level follow-up mechanism under the supervision of both Secretariats, tasked with preparing regular progress reports on the implementation of the summit's outcomes, to enhance effectiveness and sustainability.
'Finally, we look forward to ASEAN's participation in Expo 2030, which will be hosted in Riyadh. This will be a global opportunity to present a new model of sustainable partnerships, future technologies, and economic and cultural openness,' he said.
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in chairing ASEAN in the summit said today's discussions and deliberations are crucial in ensuring the two bloc's partnership remains dynamic, responsive and impactful.
He added that ASEAN and GCC have the means and responsibility to rise as anchors of stability and engines of future growth.
The ASEAN-GCC Summit, which serves as a platform to enhance inter-bloc cooperation, held its first edition in 2023 in Riyadh. The GCC will also participate in another summit with ASEAN and China later today.
The summits are held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

US-led coalition kills senior IS leader in Syria operation

ATME: Syrian state media confirmed that US-led coalition forces killed a senior Islamic State group leader during an operation in northwest Syria on Wednesday. State television reported that coalition forces conducted an air drop targeting a house in the town of Atme within Idlib province. The operation specifically targeted Iraqi national Salah Numan, known as Ali, who was described as 'a leader in the Daesh (IS) organisation'. The security source identified him as 'one of the most dangerous men wanted for his involvement in activating and mobilising IS cells in Syria'. The coalition has not released any statements about an operation in northwest Syria. Three witnesses, including the building owner where Numan resided, confirmed the raid occurred after midnight with reports of aircraft noise and gunfire. State television detailed that coalition forces raided the house where Numan lived with his family and mother, shooting him dead after he jumped from their first-floor balcony. An anonymous Iraqi security source revealed that Numan was the brother of a top IS leader killed in a 2020 coalition strike in Deir Ezzor province. Iraqi intelligence led to Wednesday's operation according to the security source, who added that Numan's wives were arrested during the raid. Building owner Mohammed al-Sheikh reported hearing noise around 2:30 am and encountering coalition forces who ordered his surrender. He stated that 'the translator's accent was Iraqi' during the encounter with the operation forces. Sheikh explained that forces blindfolded his family, led them away, and collected their details including fingerprints during the operation. Sheikh clarified that he rented the house to Numan 'via a real estate agency and had no connection to him' regarding the tenant's activities. Neighbour Abdel-Qader al-Sheikh confirmed Numan had lived in the area for two years, stating 'We didn't have anything to do with him' about their relationship with the IS leader. The US-led coalition has frequently conducted strikes in Idlib targeting IS officials, including a previously announced raid in June. Several former IS leaders have been eliminated in the province through coalition operations over recent years. Islamic State originally seized significant Syrian and Iraqi territory in 2014 during Syria's ongoing civil war before suffering territorial defeat five years later. The group's fighters maintain an active presence in the region, particularly within Syria's vast desert areas where they continue operations. – AFP

US forces conduct raid in northern Syria against IS target, sources say

ATMEH, Syria (Reuters) -U.S. forces took part in a pre-dawn raid in northwestern Syria early on Wednesday that targeted a member of the Islamic State group, a U.S. official and a Syrian security source said. A second Syrian security source and Syria's state-owned Al-Ikhbariya said the target was killed as he tried to escape. It was the second known raid in northern Syria by U.S. troops since former President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December. The Islamist-led government that replaced him has pledged to prevent a resurgence of Islamic State and is part of an anti-IS alliance that includes the U.S.-led coalition fighting the group. It was not immediately clear who the Islamic State member targeted on Wednesday was. The U.S. official said he was a suspected high-value target. The first Syrian source said he was an Iraqi national and was married to a French national. It was not immediately clear what happened to his wife. The Pentagon did not immediately have any public comment on the reports. The operation began at around 2 a.m. (1100 GMT), according to the Syrian security sources and neighbours in the town of Atmeh, in Idlib province. Helicopters and drones provided air cover, one Syrian security source and residents said. Local Syrian forces set up a cordon around the neighbourhood but U.S. forces conducted the actual raid, the second security source said. Abdelqader al-Sheikh, a neighbour, said he was up late with his son and heard a noise in the yard next door. "I called out, 'who are you?' and they started speaking to me in English, telling me to put my hands up," Sheikh told Reuters. He said the armed forces stayed on the roofs of surrounding houses for the next two hours and that he could hear someone nearby speaking Arabic in an Iraqi accent. In July, the Pentagon said its forces had conducted a raid in Aleppo province resulting in the death of a senior Islamic State leader and his two adult Islamic State-affiliated sons. Idlib has been a hiding spot for senior Islamic State figures for years. U.S. forces killed IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in the village of Barisha in Idlib province in 2019 and his successor, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi, in Atmeh in 2022. Jordan FM says Israel killing all prospects for regional peace

MOSCOW: Jordan's foreign minister declared on Wednesday that Israel's military assault on Gaza has resulted in massacres and widespread starvation while systematically destroying any possibility for regional peace. His statement followed Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz authorising plans to capture Gaza City, a densely populated urban area housing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the northern part of the territory. The United Nations confirms that most of Gaza's population has been displaced since the conflict began, with many families forced to relocate multiple times. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi addressed Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during their Moscow meeting by expressing hope to discuss efforts to end the aggression on Gaza, and the massacres and starvation that it is creating. He further emphasised the destructive impact of illegal measures that continue to undermine the two-state solution and kill all prospects for peace in the region. Safadi acknowledged Russia's diplomatic stance by telling Lavrov we value your clear position against the war and your demand for reaching a permanent ceasefire. Israel maintains that its military does not target civilians and denies implementing any policy of starvation within Gaza. The Israeli government's expansion of military operations has provoked widespread international condemnation and sparked significant domestic protests. Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Israel's offensive has killed at least 62,064 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, which the United Nations considers reliable. – AFP
