For decades, drinking alcohol has been synonymous with socializing, celebrating, and relaxing. But these days, the youth seems to be rewriting the narrative—or at least taking a more conscientious approach. According to The New York Times, alcohol consumption among Gen Z has plummeted compared to Millennials when they were the same age. According to another report, 28% of Gen Z in the United States say they never drink alcohol, compared to only 16% of Millennials.
I wanted to understand why so many of my peers were taking the sober path. Is it because we've grown up in an era where 'wellness' is a lifestyle—an era in which green juices, adaptogens and matcha lattes are as trendy as some clothing brands? Or, is it that our health consciousness has combined with our notorious predisposition for anxiety has naturally led to a boycott on booze?
To find out, I decided to give sobriety a two month trial for myself. Spoiler: Since my experiment, I have gone back to drinking alcohol from time to time. Still, I truly believe that the experiment changed me for the better. It helped me understand how alcohol impacts me in every way, from my emotions to my physical health. It also helped me be more mindful of my reasons for wanting a drink and better at knowing when I might be attempting to use alcohol as an emotional crutch. Most importantly, it helped me get a handle on my anxiety—something I always thought was out of my control.
How the body responds to quitting alcohol
When you quit alcohol, your body starts a recovery process that can be noticed within the first 24 hours. The liver, which is primarily responsible for metabolizing alcohol, begins to detoxify, which reduces liver inflammation and improves its functions. In the first few days, blood sugar levels also stabilize, as alcohol interferes with glucose regulation.
After one or two weeks, improvements in sleep quality and skin hydration are common. Studies have shown that long term abstinence from alcohol reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, strengthens the immune system, and improves the balance of the intestinal microbiota.

Trump administration tiptoes into testing prior authorization in traditional Medicare

Traditional Medicare plan holders have typically not had to wait for prior authorization before receiving medical treatment. Until now. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced a new program to test prior authorization requirements for certain services in six states starting Jan. 1. The states — New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, and Washington — will apply prior authorization evaluations to more than a dozen services. CMS says the pilot program is intended to root out 'fraud, waste, and abuse,' but as Medicare Advantage members know well, prior authorization can lead to frustrating delays in care. How it works CMS will contract with private companies to deploy 'enhanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI)' to conduct the authorization reviews. It won't apply to in-patient or emergency services or treatments 'that would pose a substantial risk to patients if significantly delayed,' according to a CMS press release. Specific services that will require prior authorization are skin and tissue substitutes, electrical nerve stimulator implants, and knee arthroscopy. There is genuine concern about the costs of some of these items and services. A recent New York Times article highlighted pricey medical products, including paper-thin bandages made of dried bits of placenta, for Medicare patients. The Biden administration had approved a plan to limit Medicare's coverage of the bandages, known as skin substitutes, which were reportedly being sold for roughly $10,000 per square inch. An updated Medicare policy proposes setting a significantly lower payment rate. The new prior authorization program 'is focused on reducing wasteful spending, which is an important goal for Medicare,' Jeffrey Marr, a health economist at the Brown University School of Public Health, told Yahoo Finance. 'I expect that the use of prior authorization in this model is likely to reduce the overall level of Medicare spending,' he said. 'Selecting potentially low-value services is a critical part of setting up a well-functioning prior authorization system.' The key question for CMS to address is whether prior authorization can work in traditional Medicare in a way that does not deny or discourage high-value care that improves beneficiaries' health, Marr said. One red flag: 'The companies that will make the prior authorization decisions will be paid a percentage of the savings that they generate for Medicare. This creates an incentive for participants to deny a high share of services,' he said. In traditional Medicare, services that often require prior authorization include certain outpatient hospital services, non-emergency ambulance transport, and durable medical equipment. For 2023, under 400,000 prior authorization reviews for traditional Medicare beneficiaries were submitted to CMS, according to KFF data. Medicare Advantage plans, which are offered by private insurers, are a different story. Almost all Medicare Advantage enrollees — 99% according to KFF research — must receive prior authorization for some services. These are typically higher-cost services, such as inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility stays, chemotherapy, and other drugs. That common practice, combined with AI used to scan these requests, is a thorny issue. 'Prior authorization processes and requirements, including the use of artificial intelligence to review requests, may result in administrative hassles for providers, delays for patients in receiving necessary care, and in some instances, denials of medically necessary services, such as post-acute care,' according to Jeannie Fuglesten Biniek, co-author of the KFF report. To allay that fear, CMS noted in the announcement: 'While technology will support the review process, final decisions that a request for one of the selected services does not meet Medicare coverage requirements will be made by licensed clinicians, not machines.' The prior authorization program will not alter Medicare coverage or payment rules, for now, but other services may be added later. There has been pushback. More than a dozen members of Congress sent a letter on Aug. 7 to CMS administrator Dr. Memet Oz to urge him to 'put patients and providers first by cancelling' the model and requested more details about how the program will be implemented. 'The use of prior authorization in Medicare Advantage shows us that, in practice, [this proposal] will likely limit beneficiaries' access to care, increase burden on our already overburdened healthcare workforce, and create perverse incentives to put profit over patients,' the lawmakers wrote.A pivot in MA authorization In an odd juxtaposition, a week prior to trumpeting this new Medicare pre-authorization model, the administration announced that it had a non-binding commitment from insurance plans to reduce prior authorization in Medicare Advantage. In late June, the Department of Health and Human Services announced an initiative coordinated with companies including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, and UnitedHealthcare, to streamline prior authorization processes for patients covered by Medicare Advantage. Under the initiative, electronic prior authorization requests would become standardized by 2027. 'Pitting patients and their doctors against massive companies was not good for anyone,' US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said in a statement. 'We are actively working with industry to make it easier to get prior authorization for common services such as diagnostic imaging, physical therapy, and outpatient surgery.' Oz added: 'These commitments represent a step in the right direction toward restoring trust, easing burdens on providers, and helping patients receive timely, evidence-based care.' Following an 18-month ban, Blood Oxygen tracking is coming back to the Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 It's not an entirely on-device experience anymore, though The Apple Watch still measures Blood Oxygen, but the iPhone will calculate and display the final result It's been a long 18 months, but Apple's announced that Blood Oxygen tracking and monitoring are returning to the Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 in the United States. The feature was disabled and effectively banned on the Series 9 and Ultra 2 – then the Series 10, which launched later – after a ruling in January 2024 due to a patent dispute over the technology being used between Massimo and Apple. Now, thanks to iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1, which will roll out later today, the feature is returning in a 'redesigned' form. In its new iteration, the Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2's sensors can take a reading, then transmit the data to the connected iPhone, where it will be calculated and displayed in the Health app under 'Respiratory' readings. So no, you won't be able to take the reading, watch as it progresses, and then view the results right on your wrist, as you could before. Still, this does effectively return the tracking and monitoring functionality to the impacted Apple Watch models in the United States. In a statement shared, Apple explains the changes as: 'Users with these models in the U.S. who currently do not have the Blood Oxygen feature will have access to the redesigned Blood Oxygen feature by updating their paired iPhone to iOS 18.6.1, and their Apple Watch to watchOS 11.6.1. Following this update, sensor data from the Blood Oxygen app on Apple Watch will be measured and calculated on the paired iPhone, and results can be viewed in the Respiratory section of the Health app. This update was enabled by a recent U.S. Customs ruling.' The U.S. Customs ruling is key here, as this will return the feature to the Apple Watches sold when the ban began and was subsequently enforced. If you still have an older Apple Watch, or one sold prior to January 2024, the Blood Oxygen functionality remains unimpacted and won't be changed. That also goes for any models sold outside of the United States, which have been unimpacted by this ruling. Still, this does return the Blood Oxygen feature to the Apple Watch, even if it splits the experience between watch and phone. But this separation is likely key to having this allowed and approved by U.S. Customs. For those who have purchased an Apple Watch Series 9, 10, or Ultra 2 in those many months, this is a return to form and rounding out of the health tracking features on Apple's star wearable in the United States. Even in our Apple Watch Series 10 review, we noted that the Blood Oxygen tracking feature was missing in the US. Apple has a pretty smart rollout here, and considering rumors of further pushes into health features that we might see with future generations of Apple Watch models, it might be helpful to have these readings going straight into the Health app. Either route, though, if you've been waiting for Blood Oxygen tracking to return, it's back, but you'll want to make sure your iPhone is nearby if you want to see the results. While Apple has not shared an exact timing for the rollouts of iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1, it has promised to arrive today – August 14, 2025 – in the United States, and we'll update this piece when we see it rolling out. To save money and cut back on sugar, make your own electrolyte drink with a sports dietitian's recipe. It uses simple ingredients like sea salt, lemon, and orange juice to replenish key nutrients. Hydration is having a moment. As wellness becomes a priority for consumers, electrolyte drinks are booming. Demand for sodas is dwindling. Instead, people are flocking to products designed to quench thirst and replenish nutrients. Gatorade, PepsiCo's OG sports drink, is now vying for cooler space alongside BodyArmor (from Coca-Cola) and Electrolit (owned by Keurig Dr. Pepper). A host of electrolyte powder packets are also competing for consumer attention. They all promise an extra dose of electrolytes, key minerals like sodium and magnesium that maintain the body's fluid balance and help the nerves function. We lose these nutrients when we sweat, and depleting them too much can risk symptoms of electrolyte imbalance ranging from mild headache to serious, even life-threatening seizures. The problem is, many electrolyte drinks contain a surprising amount of sugar, sometimes as much as soda. Leading brands have as much as 36 grams of added sugar per bottle — the upper daily limit recommended for adults. That can be helpful if you're a pro athlete or practicing an endurance sport, since sugar is a quick way to top up your body's glycogen stores, the key fuel source. But most of us aren't working out for hours at a time, and our typical diets are already loaded with added sugar, which can increase our risks of heart disease and cancer. Here's an alternative: How to make a healthy electrolyte drink at home For a healthier option that also saves you some cash, you can make your own sports drink at home using sea salt to provide electrolytes. Sports dietitian Angie Asche of Eleat Nutrition shared a recipe with Business Insider from her cookbook Fuel Your Body. To make it, combine: ½ cup orange juice ½ cup coconut water juice from ½ a lemon a pinch of sea salt The fruit juice contributes added nutrients like vitamin C and potassium (another electrolyte) along with carbs for energy, at a fraction of the sugar in a typical sports drink. Coconut water provides other electrolytes like magnesium and calcium. Depending on where you shop and if you buy in bulk, the ingredients cost just over a dollar per serving. Asche recommends sticking to a hydration ratio of about three servings of water for every one serving of electrolyte drinks, depending on your activity level and how much you sweat.
