Wong & Partners had no role in 1MDB's USD1 billion transfer

The Sun22-04-2025
PUTRAJAYA: The High Court here today was told that the law firm Wong & Partners, which previously served as legal adviser to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), was not involved in handling the transfer of the company's USD1 billion for its 2009 joint venture with PetroSaudi International.
Brian Chia Hock Gee, a former partner at Wong & Partners, said the firm had no role in the payment, as it did not handle any funds.
He pointed out that the transfer was undertaken by 1MDB's chief executive officer (CEO), Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi and its former executive director of business development, Casey Tang Keng Chee.
The 56-year-old Chia, who is testifying as the 23rd defence witness in Datuk Seri Najib Razak's trial involving the alleged misappropriation of RM2.3 billion from 1MDB, said dealings with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) for exchange control approvals related to the joint venture were handled by 1MDB.
For the record, the USD1 billion was sent in two parts, namely, USD700 million went to an account at RBS Coutts, which was later found to belong to Good Star Limited, a company owned by fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low. The remaining USD300 million was transferred to an account at JP Morgan.
Regarding the joint venture agreement, Chia said he attended a meeting in London on Sept 25, 2009, as instructed by Shahrol.
'Upon my arrival in London, I was met by Shahrol and fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low. Shahrol informed me that Jho Low was an adviser to 1MDB. I was instructed by Shahrol to work with Jho Low, Casey, and Shahrol on the matter, which I then did. I attended a meeting at the law firm White & Case, which was representing the PetroSaudi Group in the joint venture.
'At the meeting, the broad principles and concept of the joint venture were discussed generally. The joint venture, as discussed, was to be a government-to-government cooperation between Malaysia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia involving an oil and gas project. Our role was to assist in the preparation of the documentation for the joint venture agreement,' he said.
On Oct 30 last year, Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah ordered Najib to enter his defence after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against him.
Najib, 71, faces 25 charges, including four counts of abusing his position to accept RM2.3 billion in bribes from 1MDB funds and 21 charges of money laundering involving the same amount.
The hearing continues tomorrow.

Net Fund Of RM42.17 Bln Disbursed To 1MDB Up To July 2025 For Debt Repayments, Company Commitments

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- A total net fund of RM42.17 billion has been channeled to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) to finance its debt repayments and meet its financial commitments as of July 31, 2025, the Finance Ministry (MoF) said. The ministry said that of the amount, RM15.44 billion came from MoF's fund and the Minister of Finance Inc (MoF Inc) which was channeled in the form of shareholder advances or loans. The remaining RM26.73 billion was from funds resulting from 1MDB asset recovery. 'Of the total, RM28.93 billion was used for 1MDB principal debt repayment while RM13.24 billion was for interest payments and company commitments,' MoF said in a parliamentary reply on the Dewan Rakyat portal today. This was in response to a query from Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Dr Wan Ismail (PH-Bandar Tun Razak) who wanted to know the amount of public funds recovered since 2022, including the return of assets linked to high-profile cases such as 1MDB. The MoF said to date, 1MDB's outstanding debt, comprising Islamic medium-term notes (IMTN) principal and interest payments up to 2039, amounts to RM9.02 billion -- RM5 billion in principal amount and RM4.02 billion for interest. The ministry said the government has channeled RM5.35 billion towards financing the principal, interest and commitments of strategic investment company SRC International Sdn Bhd (SRC). 'The present government is highly committed to continuing efforts to recover all misappropriated funds related to 1MDB and SRC, with the primary objective of maximising returns to settle debts and meet the commitments of 1MDB and SRC within the stipulated timeframe,' said the MoF. It said that since the Asset Recovery Trust Account was established in December 2018, the government has successfully recovered a total of RM29.7 billion linked to 1MDB and SRC.

Magma completes RM379mil capital reduction, eyes long-term growth

KUALA LUMPUR: Magma Group Bhd has completed its RM379.21 million capital reduction exercise, a move aimed at strengthening its balance sheet and boosting financial flexibility for long-term growth. This follows a special resolution passed at an extraordinary general meeting on March 21, with a High Court sealed order lodged with the Companies Commission on Aug 13. Through the exercise, Magma's issued share capital was reduced from RM669.15 million to RM289.94 million. The number of shares in issue remains at 1.68 billion, with no impact on shareholders' equity ownership. "This capital reduction marks an important step in our transformation journey," group managing director and group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Thomas Liang Chee Fong said in a statement. "With a stronger balance sheet, we can accelerate our CHAGEE joint venture rollout, unlock value from our Mont Kiara landbank, and pursue high-potential opportunities in hospitality and property, all with the goal of delivering sustainable returns to our shareholders." Magma said the exercise does not involve cancelling any shares or changing the shareholding structure. Instead, it streamlines the company's capital base, improves balance sheet efficiency, and enhances key financial ratios. Following the completion, the group aims to focus on expanding its lifestyle food and beverage business, enhancing its hospitality portfolio and unlocking value from its property assets

Ex-AG Terrirudin may be subpoenaed over Najib's addendum bid, says lawyer

Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 By: Faisal Asyraf, FMT Text Size: Senior counsel Shafee Abdullah speaking to the media at the Palace of Justice, Putrajaya, after the Federal Court hearing today. PUTRAJAYA: Senior counsel Shafee Abdullah said today former attorney-general Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh could be subpoenaed to testify in Najib Razak's upcoming judicial review hearing on the royal addendum at the High Court. Shafee said they might call several witnesses, including Terrirudin and other officers, to give evidence either through affidavits or in person. 'We have to do a very tight adduction of the facts during the hearing of judicial review,' he told reporters after today's Federal Court ruling, which affirmed the Jan 6 majority decision of the Court of Appeal allowing Najib to adduce additional evidence and ordering the High Court to hear his judicial review application. He said they were considering using discovery and interrogatories in the proceedings. 'We can make requests for discovery, for an immediate show of where the addendum is, and what happened to the addendum that has been delayed for a year and a half. 'We can (also) interrogate the other side to tell us what truly happened, why the addendum has not surfaced for such a long time,' he said. Earlier today, a three-member bench led by Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim ruled that Najib could present fresh evidence on the alleged supplementary addendum. Najib is currently in Kajang prison serving the jail sentence meted out for misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd. He was initially sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM210 million, which he began serving on Aug 23, 2022. However, the Pardons Board reduced his sentence to six years and the fine to RM50 million in January 2024. He later claimed to have learned of the addendum's existence, which purportedly allows him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
