Spain's Aitana Bonmati in hospital with viral meningitis days before Euro 2025
The 27-year-old Barcelona player, who has won the Ballon d'Or for the past two years, was absent for her country's 3-1 friendly win over Japan on Friday.
She posted a picture on Instagram of herself watching the match, which was played in the Spanish city of Leganes, from a hospital bed.
Euro 2025 kicks off on Wednesday, with world champions Spain set to begin their campaign a day later against Portugal in Bern.
National team head coach Montse Tome, whose side also face Belgium and Italy in Group B, told a press conference: 'Initially all the tests came back fine but the last one confirmed she has viral meningitis.
'The word is scary but the doctor tells me it's under control. She will remain hospitalised; we don't know the timeline of her recovery.
'She's an extremely important player for us and we will wait for her, no matter what, as long as we have to.'
Bonmati was a key member of the Spain squad which won the 2023 World Cup – following victory over England in the final – and the 2024 Nations League.

Nico Williams has made a demand at the eleventh hour ahead of his proposed move to Barcelona after indicating his desire to leave Athletic Club. Williams, 22, has pushed for a move away from Bilbao this summer with Bayern Munich and Arsenal also reported to have been interested in signing the winger. The regulation in Spain's top tier requires a club to match every euro spent on new signings with a euro of revenue or wage savings. Therefore, Barcelona must sell players in order to guarantee that Williams can be registered with the likes of Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Andreas Christensen, Pablo Torre and Ansu Fati linked with a move away. However, their departures are not guaranteed, which can in part explain why Williams may have some apprehensions over his switch. He appears to want to avoid a repeat of the situations that befell Dani Olmo and Pau Victor after they signed for Barcelona - which meant their registrations were revoked. Although they were still allowed to appear for Flick's team last season, their had been a concern that they would miss out on matches as LaLiga failed to prove they were complying with the league's financial rules by the deadline on 31 December last year. If Garcia ends the Texas event on Sunday evening in the top five of the individual LIV standings and top of those stars not already qualified for the 153rd Championship, he'll be heading to Northern Ireland. 'Now what I have to do is keep showing my strengths, keep showing my golf, especially what I showed in the first third of the year. 'The good thing is that I know I'm on Luke's ballot and I just have to keep showing that I can do good things and that I can help the team. The Ryder Cup is my favourite golf tournament in the world. 'It would be incredible to be able to compete in another Ryder Cup, especially knowing that in New York, at Bethpage, it's going to be tough and maybe a little experience always comes in handy.'
