BYD Atto 2: Malaysia getting larger 51.1kWh battery, stalk drive selector, and more
This is based on the EV's staging site for Malaysia that we have discovered online.
Malaysia's Atto 2 may come with a bigger capacity battery

In many ways, this discovery feels like a deja vu as we found the staging site more or less in the same way as per BYD Dolphin's price list ahead of its official launch event in 2023.
However, we couldn't find the price list for Atto 2, though…we guess BYD Sime Motors people can take a breather now.
If the information on the staging site is accurate, then the new EV will be released into our market with just one variant called the Atto 2 Premium.
The biggest difference that the Malaysian unit has when compared to the existing version for Europe and China is that its LFP-based BYD Blade battery has a higher capacity.
At the moment, the Yuan Up in China is being offered with either a 32kWh or a 45.12kWh battery pack.
In Europe, the Atto 2 is currently available with a 45.12kWh battery pack while a version with a higher capacity battery pack will be offered in 'coming months'.
Now, let's circle back to Malaysia: the staging site said that the Atto 2 Premium for our market is equipped with a larger 51.13kWh battery pack.
This allows the new EV to deliver up to 410km of NEDC-rated range or around 340km if you convert that figure to WLTP.
The Atto 2 Premium for Malaysia does have a front-wheel drive setup with a 130kW (174hp) electric motor that also produces 290Nm of torque, similar to the European and high-spec Chinese options.
The staging site also said that the Malaysian unit is capable of going from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.
Other details that the staging site has also listed include Macpherson strut front suspension, torsion beam rear suspension, and 17-inch wheels with 215/60 tyres.
In addition to that, the site has also listed three colours for Atto 2, such as Ski White, Harbour Grey, and Breeze Green.
Malaysia's Atto 2 may also feature a stalk drive selector

As we browse around the staging site looking for more details, we notice something interesting about interior photos that were published on the site. Specifically, it appears that the Malaysian unit may come with a stalk drive selector.
As a comparison, the drive selector for the European and Chinese units is located on the centre console. BYD essentially used the same drive selector from M6 for Atto 2 in these markets.

Given the difference, the button layout on the centre console for the Malaysian unit will also be different if the picture on the staging site is accurate. Other features that might be included with Atto 2 for the Malaysian market Image taken from Atto 2's staging site for the Malaysian market.
Aside from the price tag, there are still a number of details missing from the staging site. That being said, we believe that the unit that Malaysia is getting will be similar to the right-hand drive (RHD) unit for the Hong Kong market.
For one, the HK unit features a 51.13kWh battery and stalk drive selector. If our hunch is on point, then we might be seeing the Atto 2 for the Malaysian market to also come with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment display, and a 50W wireless phone charger.
Based on the HK unit, the Atto 2 for our market may also come with 11kW AC charging module alongside the support for DC charging speed of up to 82kW. It may also have a 400L boot space which can be expanded further to 1,340L once you fold the EV's rear seats.
Of course, do note that nothing is confirmed until it is officially confirmed by BYD Sime Motors itself. So, make sure to tune in for more details from the launch event of Atto 2 on Thursday, July 24. — SoyaCincau

Nine Malaysian firms make the cut in Forbes Asia's Best Under A Billion 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Nine Malaysian companies have been included in Forbes Asia's Best Under a Billion 2025 list, which puts the spotlight on 200 Asia-Pacific companies with annual sales above USUS$10mil and below US$1bil. The nine Malaysian companies in this year's list are Able Global Bhd , Crescendo Corp Bhd , Frontken Corp Bhd , Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd , Hup Seng Industries Bhd , ITMax System Bhd , Kerjaya Prospek Group Bhd , Pekat Group Bhd and Scientex Bhd . There are fewer Malaysian companies on the list in 2025 as compared to the 11 that made it in 2024. Able Global was the only Malaysian company that appeared in both years. Malaysia's nine inclusions gives it the third-most representation on the list among countries in Southeast Asia, with only Thailand (17) and Indonesia (10) featuring more companies. "With trade tensions looming over the Asia-Pacific region, growth is predicted to continue to slow, according to the International Monetary Fund. "Despite these challenges, the annual Best Under A Billion list showcases businesses that remained resilient over the past year and, in many cases, thrived," said Forbes Asia in a statement. Forbes Asia added that the financial service sector saw 18 companies in the list, which was more than double the eight that appeared in the previous year. The beauty industry saw 13 companies - mostly from South Korea - included in the list. "Other companies in the region have benefited from the gathering momentum in the segments in which they operate, such as renewable energy, electric vehicles and data centres," it added. In total, 69 companies returned to the 2025 list from the previous year The companies on this unranked list were selected based on a composite score using measures such as debt, sales and earnings-per-share growth over both the most recent fiscal one- and three-year periods, and the strongest one- and five-year average returns on equity. Aside from quantitative criteria, qualitative screens were applied, such as excluding companies with serious governance issues, questionable accounting practices, environmental concerns, management problems or legal troubles in recent years. The list uses annual results based on the latest publicly available figures as of July 7, 2025.

Shares in Asia rally, dollar lower against yen on Fed rate cut bets
TOKYO: Shares in Asia rose for a second consecutive session and the US dollar held most of its losses on Tuesday as investors increased bets the Federal Reserve will act to prop up the world's largest economy. US shares rallied on Monday on generally positive earnings reports and increasing bets for a September rate cut from the Fed after disappointing jobs data on Friday. Oil remained lower after output increases by OPEC+ and threats by US President Donald Trump to raise tariffs on India over its Russian petroleum purchases. Japan's Nikkei rallied, with data showing a jump in the nation's service sector activity in July. "There are signs of weakness in parts of the US economy, that plays to the view that maybe not in September, but certainly this year that the Fed's still on course to ease potentially twice," said Rodrigo Catril, senior currency strategist at National Australia Bank. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.6 per cent in early trade. The Nikkei climbed 0.5 per cent after falling by the most in two months on Monday. The dollar dropped 0.1 per cent to 146.96 yen. The euro was unchanged at US$1.1572, while the dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of major peers, edged up 0.1 per cent after a two-day slide. Odds for a September rate cut now stand at about 94 per cent, according to CME Fedwatch, from a 63 per cent chance seen on July 28. Market participants see at least two quarter-point cuts by the end of this year. The disappointing nonfarm payrolls data on Friday added to the case for a cut by the Fed, and took on another layer of drama with Trump's decision to fire the head of labor statistics responsible for the figures. News that Trump would get to fill a governorship position at the Fed early also added to worries about politicisation of interest rate policy. Trump again threatened to raise tariffs on goods from India from the 25 per cent level announced last month, over its Russian oil purchases, while New Delhi called his attack "unjustified" and vowed to protect its economic interests. Second-quarter US earnings season is winding down, but investors are still looking forward to reports this week from companies including Walt Disney and Caterpillar. Tech heavyweights Nvidia, Alphabet and Meta surged overnight, and Palantir Technologies raised its revenue forecast for the second time this year on expectations of sustained demand for its artificial intelligence services. "Company earnings announcements continue to spur market moves," Moomoo Australia market strategist Michael McCarthy said in a note. In Japan, the S&P Global final services purchasing managers' index climbed to 53.6 in July from 51.7 in June, marking the strongest expansion since February. Oil prices were little changed after three days of declines on mounting oversupply concerns, with the potential for more Russian supply disruptions providing support. Brent crude futures were flat at US$68.76 per barrel, while US crude futures dipped 0.02 per cent to US$66.28 a barrel. Spot gold was slightly higher at US$3,381.4 per ounce. The pan-region Euro Stoxx 50 futures were up 0.2 per cent, while German DAX futures were up 0.3 per cent and FTSE futures rose 0.4 per cent. US stock futures, the S&P 500 e-minis , were up 0.2 per cent. Bitcoin was little changed at US$114,866.06 after a two-day rally.

KL to get 762,500 new homes by 2040, 40pc earmarked as affordable under DBKL plan
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) aims to provide up to 762,500 housing units by 2040, in line with the direction of the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL2040), which focuses on the well-being of urban residents. Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the housing stock as of 2020 stood at 500,803 units, comprising both open market housing and affordable housing. 'Over the next 15 years, new housing development will be planned based on the increasing number of residents and households in the capital. 'Housing planning will emphasise the needs of various groups, including youth, B40 and M40 families, senior citizens and other vulnerable communities,' she told Bernama. She said the plan also introduces the provision of micro and transit units for newly working youths, compact housing for dual-income, no-kids (DINK) couples and young professionals, as well as age-friendly housing for the elderly. Maimunah said DBKL has also allocated several specific land-use zones for housing, including Residential Zone 4 (R4), designated for affordable and public housing. She said PTKL2040 emphasises the principle of inclusive development by maintaining a balance between the need for housing, access to public transportation and environmental sustainability. She added that the housing target also takes into account the potential for redevelopment of existing areas and the provision of government land in strategic locations within the city. 'The pricing of affordable housing is subject to the National Affordable Housing Policy, with a maximum price set at RM300,000 per unit, in line with initiatives such as Residensi Wilayah. 'For the Residensi Madani scheme, the maximum selling price is set at RM200,000 with a standard size of 800 square feet, while other units will be developed to meet the diverse needs of the urban community,' she said. Maimunah said PTKL2040 targets at least 40 per cent of all new housing units by 2040 to be affordable homes. The long-term plan also outlines the definition of affordable housing under two categories: rental units such as the People's Housing Project (PPR), Public Housing and Subsidised Rental Housing (PASS); and ownership units covering projects like Residensi Wilayah, Residensi Madani, the Malaysia Civil Servants Housing Programme (PPAM), PR1MA and One Staff Member One Home (SASaR). 'This initiative aims to ensure fair and sustainable access to housing for all segments of society, including low- and middle-income groups,' she said. — Bernama
