Springbok team to face Wallabies in Rugby Championship opener: Fassi at 15, Kolisi at 8
The teams will meet again the following Saturday in Cape Town before the Boks face the All Blacks in back-to-back Tests in New Zealand and then Argentina in home and away Tests.
Erasmus has named Siya Kolisi to lead the team from eighthman for the first time at Test level, while Aphelele Fassi has beaten out the challenge of Damian Willemse to start at fullback.
Also, Andre Esterhuizen will feature at inside centre because Damian de Allende has a back niggle, with Manie Libbok at flyhalf. Edwill van der Merwe has also been picked ahead of Cheslin Kolbe at wing because the latter has been nursing a minor injury.
'Experimenting with combinations'
The Springboks will be hunting their fifth successive victory against the Wallabies in the match on Saturday after defeating them in both Rugby Championship games in Australia last season and once each in 2023 and 2022.
'We've been experimenting with player combinations during the Incoming Series and at our conditioning camp in the last two weeks, and we believe this team will allow us to play the type of rugby we want to play against Australia,' said Erasmus.
'The Wallabies will be determined to change their win record against us in the last three seasons, so they'll come out guns blazing, and we are confident that the players we selected will be up for the challenge.'

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus selected a star-studded matchday 23 for this weekend's Test against the Wallabies, and there aren't all that many 'newcomers' who have cracked the nod for this tournament opener. However, there are still some big opportunities for a few 'fringe' players, and here we look at three who can truly shake things up with a big performance. Edwill van der Merwe The talented wing has made a flying start to his Test career, but there is no doubt that this Saturday's Test against the Wallabies will present his biggest challenge to date. With Cheslin Kolbe rested as a precaution due to an injury niggle, Van der Merwe must make the most of this rare opportunity to don the No 14 in such a high-profile fixture, and to prove that there is not all that much that separates him from his first-choice counterparts. Andre Esterhuizen In rapid fashion, Esterhuizen has become an integral member of the current Springbok group, particularly due to the fact he is viewed as a unique hybrid player who can cover centre and flank. Damian de Allende is virtually irreplaceable at inside centre, but this is another game where Esterhuizen can demonstrate just how much he has progressed as a player over the last 24 months, while ramping up the competition for that No 12 jersey. Marco van Staden With Siya Kolisi owning the No 6 jersey, the opportunity for Van Staden to earn a start in a 'big' game like this came as quite a surprise as the Springbok captain was instead shifted to eighthman. Van Staden has clearly been chosen for his impact at the breakdown, and to negate some of the Wallabies' threats in this area, and so it will be fascinating to see how he grabs this opportunity especially considering it surely won't be all that long before Kolisi returns to his more regular position at openside flank. PRASA promises to get Springbok fans to Ellis Park ahead of kick-off
PRASA will offer a train shuttle service for spectators attending Rugby Championship matches over the next fortnight. Image: X The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has announced that it will offer a train shuttle service for spectators to use when attending Rugby Championship matches over the next two weekends. ADVERTISEMENT The Springboks will take on Australia at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on 16 August and at the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town on 23 August. To ease traffic congestion and ensure an enjoyable experience for all fans, PRASA will operate a dedicated train shuttle service connecting spectators from the Gautrain and other transport modes between Johannesburg Park Station and Ellis Park Station on Saturday starting at 11:00 to 16:30. This service will run at 15 minute intervals. The train service will resume again at 19:00, with the last train departing Ellis Park Station at 20:45 in order for commuters to catch the last Gautrain at 21:15. ADVERTISEMENT Additional trains In the Cape Town, PRASA will run additional trains on the Southern, Northern and Cape Flats Lines to Cape Town Station on Saturday, 23 August. The train will operate at 30 to 40 minute intervals between 11:00 to 16:00. Commuters will then make their way to Cape Town Civic Centre, where MyCiTi buses will be operating to assist spectators make their way to the Cape Town Stadium. The train service will resume at 20:00 to 22:00, to ensure that all commuters make their way home safely. ADVERTISEMENT 'Commuters are encouraged to arrive at their respective stations early to purchase their train tickets for R20 and make their way to the stadium.
