Where Billy Napier ranks among current college football head coaches as players
Not every head coach at the college football level participated in the gridiron grind before donning the clipboard and headphones on the sidelines, but a strong majority rose through the ranks the hard way. Even then, while most share the experience of competing on the field with their fellow peers, not everyone had the same experience during their playing days.
Recently, ESPN's Adam Rittenberg took a stab at ranking all of the FBS head coaches according to their careers as college football players — at least, the ones who played. His list spotlights what coaches did as college players, not necessarily at the pro level, although their entire careers are considered.
Among those mentioned was Florida Gators coach Billy Napier, who landed among the "small-school superstars" tier along with eight others.
"After playing high school football for his father, Bill, Napier went to Furman, where he twice earned All-Southern Conference honors as a quarterback," Rittenberg begins. "Furman won two league titles and reached the Division I-AA (now FCS) national championship game in Napier's junior season of 2001. Napier set team records as a senior with 64.8% completions and 2,475 yards and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, given to the top FCS player."
Former Gators skipper Dan Mullen — who is now on the sidelines for the UNLV Rebels — is also mentioned among the 22 "small-school standouts" for his collegiate efforts.
"Mullen played tight end for Ursinus College, a Division III program in Pennsylvania, where he earned two letters and was a first-team All-Centennial Conference selection as a senior in 1993," Rittenberg notes.
Neither head coach made it into the top 30 list, which was headlined by none other than Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders.

Florida Scores 4-Star LSU Decommit JaReylan McCoy

Florida Scores 4-Star LSU Decommit JaReylan McCoy originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Billy Napier and his Florida Gators notch their second big commit of the day, scoring a commitment from four-star defensive lineman JaReylan McCoy out of Tupelo, Mississippi. McCoy was previously committed to play for Brian Kelly at LSU, but decommitted in February. Advertisement The 6-foot-6 defensive lineman is ranked as the 163rd recruit nationally and 17th at his position in the class of 2026, according to On3 "Physical gifts are readily apparent on Friday nights," said Charles Power of On3. "Flashes good speed and functional movement skills. Closes to make some impressive plays. McCoy chose Florida over schools like Texas and Ole Miss, stating that he likes their player development. Florida head coach Billy Napier.© Brett Patzke-Imagn Images 'The brotherhood the players have with each other is something I really like," McCoy told On3. "The development system is big for me too. They have guys like Caleb Banks who is going to be a top five pick, so it's hard not to want to get in a place like that." McCoy also had high praise for Billy Napier, telling On3 that the coach really sold him on the school during his official visit. McCoy believes that Napier is building something great in Gainesville. Advertisement 'Coach Napier is taking Florida to a championship,' McCoy told On3. 'It's crazy that I can even be a part of something that he's building.' McCoy's commitment adds to a big weekend for Florida, which scored a commitment from four-star wide receiver Marquez Daniel earlier in the day. The two four-stars join a 2026 class for Florida that ranks at the 13th in the country, and sixth in the SEC. Duke Basketball Reveals Big News on Defending National Champions

Duke Basketball Reveals Big News on Defending National Champions originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cooper Flagg era in Durham has come to an end after just one electric season. Flagg, widely expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, delivered a memorable year with Duke and is now headed to the pros. Advertisement Meanwhile, head coach Jon Scheyer and his Blue Devils staff are deep in preparation to reload the roster following a Final Four run last season. As the offseason unfolds, Duke basketball dropped a major announcement on Thursday that sets up a marquee non-conference showdown in the upcoming 2025-26 season. On Thursday, Duke shared an announcement on social media: "Marquee matchup in Cameron otw‼️🏰💡😈" The buzz? Duke will host the defending national champions, the Florida Gators, on December 2. The high-profile matchup is part of the ACC/SEC Challenge and will air on ESPN. This will be the first meeting between the two programs since November 2017, when Duke put up 49 first-half points and edged Florida 87-84 in a thriller. Duke holds a 5-2 all-time series lead and has won the last two games. The last time Florida won against the Blue Devils was during the 1999-2000 season, when the Gators defeated Duke in the NCAA Tournament with an 87-78 win. Advertisement This December clash will mark just the second time Florida has played at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The last visit came in the 1998-99 season, when Duke dominated the Gators 116-86. Florida Gators head coach Todd Donnan-Imagn Images Both Duke and Florida reached the Final Four in the 2024-25 season. Duke fell in a heartbreaking 70-67 loss to Houston, while Florida beat Auburn 79-73 and then defeated Houston 65-63 in the championship game to claim the national title. Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, both rosters will look significantly different. Duke is expected to start freshman phenom Cameron Boozer from day one. He'll likely be joined in the starting five by Caleb Foster, Isaiah Evans, Dame Sarr and Patrick Ngongba. Advertisement Florida reloaded through the transfer portal, adding Boogie Fland from Arkansas along with Xaivian Lee and Denzel Washington. Big man Rueben Chinyelu withdrew from the 2025 NBA Draft and is returning to Gainesville. With several key pieces back and more talent added, head coach Todd Golden has the tools to defend the title. This non-conference showdown between powerhouses is already shaping up to be one of the must-watch games of the season. Florida football lands commitment from four-star RB for 2026 class

Florida football secured its eighth commitment for the 2026 class, landing a pledge from running back Carsyn Baker. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Baker rushed for 1,282 yards and 13 TDs last season at Langston Hughes High School in Fairburn, Georgia. He chose the Florida Gators over offers from South Carolina, Florida State, Alabama and Auburn. Advertisement Baker is rated a three-star per 247Sports and a four-star per 247Sports Composite, as the 187th-best player nationally and the 15th-best running back in the country. Per 247Sports recruiting analyst Hudson Standish, Baker a, "Physically imposing upright runner hovering a shade under 6-foot-1, 195 pounds with a blazing track and field profile. Finished his junior season with three straight 100+ yards performances, culminating with a three-touchdown effort in the GHSA AAAAA state final against national powerhouse Milton. Finds success running outside/wide zone, quickly finding a crease and reaching his top-end gear that the majority of Friday night defenders cannot match." Baker is UF's first true running back in the 2026 class although four-star Gainesville Buchholz High commit Justin Williams is listed as an athlete who can play both running back and receiver.
