«You won't find anyone better than me to win AFCON», says Morocco coach Regragui
Today, national team coach Walid Regragui expressed full confidence in his ability to lead Morocco to victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco at the end of the year.
Speaking at a press conference at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maamoura, where he announced the squad for upcoming friendly matches against Tunisia (June 6) and Benin (June 9) at the Grand Stadium of Fez, Regragui addressed rumors about his potential departure from the national team. He declared, «You won't find anyone better than me to win the Africa Cup of Nations».
«If anyone thinks Guardiola, Ancelotti, or Klopp can win it, they should go sit down with them and plead their case. I'm capable of doing it. No one will do it better than me».
Regragui described the two friendly matches as crucial tests to evaluate players ahead of the tournament. «Since the Africa Cup of Nations will see us facing African teams, choosing Tunisia and Benin is important», he explained, noting that both teams have strong defenses that will help Morocco prepare effectively.
On the absence of some players, he said, «We're not here to chase or seduce anyone. Players must earn the right to represent Morocco». He added, «Our mission is to attract the best players who choose to represent Morocco with their hearts. If a player isn't called up, it means they haven't secured their place yet or have other options». He urged fans to support the players who have accepted the call to wear the national jersey.
Regarding the missing defenders, Regragui clarified, «About 90 percent of the defenders are out due to injury, but this gives us the chance to test new players and confirm our choices after these two matches». He also noted that «these absences just happened to coincide with the friendly match period».
He reaffirmed, «We have a project to build a strong defense, which is why I'm experimenting with different players to find the best combination».
Regragui stressed that while «the team's core remains stable, changes depend on player form, injuries, and decisions by the technical staff». He concluded, «Winning the Africa Cup of Nations requires talented players, passionate fans, and above all, a winning mentality that must be deeply embedded in the team—it's essential for success».

Sektioui: Hakimi Fully Deserves Ballon d'Or
Morocco coach Tarik Sektioui says Achraf Hakimi 'fully and rightfully' deserves to win the Ballon d'Or. Speaking after Morocco's 3-1 win over Zambia in the African Nations Championship, Sektioui said: 'I was alongside him during the Olympics; he is an outstanding player. He has enormous qualities, but he also has enormous values as a person. That's what makes his quality, and it's exactly what's reflected on the pitch.' Sektioui added that Hakimi has maintained a very high level for the past four to five years. 'It's a source of pride for us, it's a source of pride for Moroccan football. For me, he fully deserves the Ballon d'Or.' On the match, Sektioui said his side were more efficient in attack compared with their previous game, creating several chances and forcing Zambia to retreat. 'The video session we held paid off thanks to the maturity and intelligence of the players,' he said, adding that they missed seven or eight scoring opportunities. He spoke highly about the players' fighting spirit and thanked those from Raja, AS FAR and RS Berkane for their contribution after being called up. Achraf Hakimi is now the third most decorated African footballer after helping Paris Saint-Germain win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night. The victory takes Hakimi's career total to 17 trophies, placing him behind only Samuel Eto'o and Yaya Touré, who each have 18. At 26, Hakimi is close to surpassing both to become Africa's most decorated player. This bolsters his position among Africa's most successful footballers, with the opportunity to equal or break the record soon. His performances for club and country this year have kept him in contention for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, to be awarded in September. Tags: Ballon D'orCHAN 2024HakimiMoroccoPSGsektioui

Hakimi Enters Africa's Top Three Most Decorated Players
Achraf Hakimi is now the third most decorated African footballer after helping Paris Saint-Germain win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night. PSG recovered from 0-2 down to draw 2-2 with Tottenham in Udine, before winning 4-3 on penalties. Hakimi contributed to the attack with one chance created, five crosses—one completed—and two successful long passes from six attempts. He completed 69 of 83 passes, an accuracy rate of 83%. Defensively, the Moroccan international won two of three tackles and was not beaten in a one-on-one throughout the match. While less advanced in his attacking runs than in previous games, he maintained a key role on the right flank, particularly in the closing stages as PSG pushed for an equaliser. The victory takes Hakimi's career total to 17 trophies, placing him behind only Samuel Eto'o and Yaya Touré, who each have 18. At 26, Hakimi is close to surpassing both to become Africa's most decorated player. He reacted to the win by posting photographs from the celebrations on social media. His performances for club and country this year have kept him in contention for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, to be awarded in September. Hakimi's latest title bolsters his position among Africa's most successful footballers, with the opportunity to equal or break the record soon. Barcelona Move Fast to Sign Emerging African Talent
Barcelona are stepping up their scouting efforts in Africa, a region that has already produced several young prospects for the club. According to SPORT, the club plans to give 'maximum attention to the continent,' with a strategy aimed at identifying and signing emerging talent before rival European teams move in. The arrival of Joao Amaral as director of the scouting department has given the project fresh energy. Under his leadership, 'Operation Africa' is expected to operate at full pace. Mousa Kone, Barcelona's scout in the region, has been praised for his 'excellent work in identifying promising players.' Last season, the club brought four African teenagers into their youth academy: David Oduro, Aziz Issah, Ibrahim Diarra, and Hafiz Gariba, all aged 18. Several other players have also been tested at the Ciutat Esportiva in recent months. With financial resources limited and first-team registrations a challenge, Barcelona's strategy is to detect talent early. The club aims to complete signings before competition from England and France intensifies, as both countries have been active in scouting Africa. The approach offers lower transfer costs than buying fully developed players but carries risks. Signing young players means investing in potential rather than proven ability. These players must wait until they turn 18, the minimum age for non-EU signings, to fully join La Masia and complete their football education. Tags: AfricaBarcelonaDecoTalents
