APCC slams coalition govt over schools' closure
Vijayawada: Narapareddy Kiran Kumar Reddy, official spokesperson for the Congress Party, on Friday strongly condemned the ruling coalition government's policies regarding education, particularly the closure of schools and the proposed changes to the medium of instruction.
Reddy highlighted a stark contrast between past and present educational policies. 'Under the Congress government, during the tenure of late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, thousands of primary schools were established in undivided Andhra Pradesh to ensure every poor child had access to education as part of the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act,' he stated. 'Today, the coalition government is closing thousands of schools.'
He expressed concern that the bifurcation of primary schools into 'Basic Primary Schools' and 'Model Primary Schools' is an attempt by the coalition government to deprive poor students of education. He further warned, 'Out of approximately 33,000 primary schools in the state, only 7,000 to 8,000 are being designated as Model Primary Schools. The remaining Basic Primary Schools are at risk of closing in the coming days.'
Reddy criticised the government's decision to convert all schools into single-medium English schools, completely eliminating Telugu medium education, which he termed 'atrocious.'
He condemned the previous YSRCP government for allegedly selling medical seats under the NRI quota in newly-established government medical colleges. He also slammed the current coalition government's reported plans to hand over medical colleges to private entities.
He also pointed out the failure to pay wages to MGNREGS workers for several months, despite the scheme which was introduced by the Congress Party specified payment within 15 days. 'Under the leadership of State party president Sharmila, all Congress Party cadres will question all anti-people actions of the coalition government on behalf of the public and in matters concerning public issues,' Reddy concluded.

TPCC chief to take up ceasefire appeal with State government; Peace Talks Committee slams Centre for not announcing ceasefire
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud has said that he will bring the Peace Talks Committee's appeal for a ceasefire with the CPI (Maoist) to the notice of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, besides discussing it completely in the party's high-level committee, to explore the possibility of announcing a ceasefire in the State. Addressing a roundtable conference organised by the Peace Talks Committee at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram here on Sunday, Mr. Mahesh slammed the Modi-led Central government for its handling of the Maoist issue and Operation Kagar at Karreguttalu. He accused the Centre of aiming to eliminate Naxalites to hand over mineral wealth in Chhattisgarh and other States to corporate companies. The Congress leader also criticised the Modi government for its 'fascist rule', saying it is willing to hold talks with terrorists but not with those who sacrificed their lives to address social inequalities. Stating that any democratically-elected government must act following the Constitution, he questioned why the Centre is not willing to hold talks with Maoists, who are Indian citizens, while offering a ceasefire with Pakistan. Referring to the Congress's ideology, he remembered that their party was built on the foundations of non-violence. He, however, condemned violence from all sides and stated that Naxalism was born out of economic inequalities. Expressing similar views, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC Dasoju Sravan Kumar, representing the party at the conference, emphasised his party's commitment to peace, dialogue and democratic values. He recalled that former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, during a public meeting in Warangal, had called for an immediate end to Operation Kagar and urged the Central government to hold peace talks. Mr. Sravan suggested that people resort to arms when they lack a platform to raise their grievances and stressed the need for effective platforms for people to express their grievances. Peace Talks Committee convener Justice Chandrakumar, members Prof. Haragopal, Prof. Anwar Khan and others urged the Centre to hold talks with the Maoists immediately.

Not the first rodeo for Shimla SP Sanjeev Gandhi, who took on Himachal DGP, top IAS officers
A native of Arki Bughar village in Solan district, Gandhi has been in the force for 25 years. As SP, Kangra, in 2017 under the Congress-led Virbhadra Singh government, he spearheaded operations against drug and mining mafias. These actions resulted in three transfers within 15 days, though public and political support called for his retention. Verma retired Saturday and necessitating the transfer of his charge to 1994-batch IPS officer Ashok Tiwari, posted as DGP (Vigilance and ACB). Gandhi, meanwhile is on medical leave and Solan SP Gaurav Singh has been given additional charge for Shimla. Shimla: Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, a 2012-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer posted as Superintendent of Police (SP) of Shimla, has landed at the center of a controversy involving senior police officers and political figures. The Himachal Pradesh government placed Gandhi, former director general of police (DGP) Atul Verma, and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Onkar Sharma on leave on 29 May, citing 'indiscipline'. He was subsequently transferred to Una, where he continued targeting similar syndicates. In 2022, Gandhi was awarded the DGP Disc and Best Administrator Award for his work against the drug mafia in Himachal Pradesh. The current controversy stems from Gandhi's role leading a Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the death of Vimal Negi, a chief engineer with the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited, whose body was found in Gobind Sagar lake on 18 March. On 23 May, Himachal Pradesh High Court transferred the case to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) citing delays on the part of the state police. At a press conference the next day, on 24 May, Gandhi publicly named Verma, former DGP Sanjay Kundu, and Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, accusing them of obstructing justice. Gandhi alleged that Verma submitted a misleading affidavit questioning the SIT's evidence handling, particularly regarding a formatted pen drive, claiming it was intended to discredit his investigation. The affidavit referenced a 20 March conversation among five police officers discussing the pen drive's potential replacement. He also criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly using corrupt means to destabilize the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government. Verma recommended Gandhi's suspension for these allegations, and Gandhi's attempt to challenge the high court's CBI transfer ruling through a Letter Patent Appeal (LPA), an appeal made against the decision of a single judge to another bench in the same court. But CM Sukhu did not act on Verma's recommendation. Subsequently, the LPA was withdrawn. ThePrint reached Gandhi, Verma and Kundu for comment but had not received a response by the time of publication. This report will be updated if and when a response is received. Gandhi's run-ins with Verma go back to 2021-22, when Gandhi, part of a police recruitment committee, raised concerns about irregularities, prompting a CBI investigation. He accused Verma, then DG-CID, of pressuring subordinates to produce a misleading report in another case and claimed Verma's staff leaked a confidential CID report in the 'samosa scandal'. As for Kundu, Gandhi alleged in the press conference on 24 May that he misrepresented a 18 July, 2023, gas leak explosion in Shimla's Middle Bazaar as a terror attack, 'misusing' the National Security Guard (NSG) to fabricate evidence. In another case, Gandhi's status report on a complaint by Dharamshala businessman Nishant Sharma detailed nine phone calls between Kundu and K.D. Shreedhar, an advocate and Sharma's business partner, in 2023, including a 256-second call on 25 October, 2023, suggesting potential 'criminal links', leading to a court-ordered impartial investigation. Gandhi's investigations have also led to tensions with BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma, whom he accused of orchestrating 'horse-trading' during the February 2024 Rajya Sabha elections, when six Congress MLAs cross-voted in favour of BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan. Gandhi filed a contempt of court petition against Sharma for sharing a video of Negi case proceedings. Sharma responded with a criminal defamation notice and wrote to the Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha to move a privilege motion against Gandhi, claiming the officer's statements harmed his reputation. Gandhi has accused Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena of pressuring him to halt police inquiries in cases related to the Ram Krishna Ashram land dispute, alleging he was instructed not to question the ashram's swami. He claims a 'long-term conspiracy' by senior officials to undermine his investigations, particularly in the Negi case, which BJP alleges involves a Congress cover-up. Gandhi has reported these issues to the state government and Advocate General, stating that no action has been taken. He has expressed readiness to resign rather than compromise on his integrity, emphasising his 25 years of service. Public opinion on Gandhi is divided. Some view him as an officer committed to addressing corruption, while others, including Sharma, describe him as defiant, accusing him of politicizing investigations and challenging senior officials. 'The ongoing disputes reflect the complex interplay of policing, bureaucratic dynamics, and political tensions in Himachal Pradesh. Gandhi is outspoken but when you are in force, there is a procedure. He has made a mistake by holding a press conference against superiors,' a retired IPS officer told ThePrint on condition of anonymity. A senior police officer who did not wish to be named said Gandhi had Sukhu's backing, so far. 'He worked with a free hand. Proceeding on leave is not a big deal. But since he has levelled open accusations against superiors, that amounts to indiscipline,' he told ThePrint. 'The SIT led by Gandhi has not questioned those accused by the deceased's wife. It raises fingers on his probe and even the court has pointed it out,' another officer pointed out. P.V. Anvar jumps into fray in Kerala's Nilambur bypoll - as Trinamool Congress candidate
Making the contest in Kerala's Nilambur bypoll multi-cornered, its former MLA P.V. Anvar again jumped into the fray - as the candidate of the Trinamool Congress. West Bengal's ruling Trinamool on Sunday announced the name of Anvar as its candidate for the bypoll slated to be held on June 19. Anvar is a two-time former Left Democratic Front-backed Independent candidate from the same constituency, whose resignation prompted the bypoll. "Under the inspiration and guidance of Hon'ble Chairperson Smt. Mamata Banerjee, we are pleased to announce the All India Trinamool Congress candidate for the impending Kerala Legislative By-election scheduled for 19th June, 2025," the Trinamool said in a statement. In October last year, Anvar severed his ties with the Left Front Democratic Front after a heated spat with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and floated a new political party christened the Democratic Movement of Kerala. Later, the new political outfit merged with the Trinamool, and Anvar also resigned as a legislator. The announcement puts an end to days of political speculation over Anvar, who had also approached the Congress-led United Democratic Front, but an agreement could not be reached. Anvar's candidacy has stirred interest in Kerala's political circles, particularly after his earlier statement on Saturday declaring that he would not enter the fray. Citing financial constraints, Anvar remarked that he lacked the crores of rupees typically needed for an election campaign and had no plans to contest. He also dismissed any political ties with the UDF. However, in a surprising shift later the same day, Anvar appeared to reconsider his decision. 'What can I do if so many common workers come to visit me with Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, pleading with me to contest?' he said, suggesting mounting grassroots pressure had influenced his change of heart. Adding intrigue to the unfolding developments, Youth Congress state president Rahul Mamkoottathil paid a late-night visit to Anvar's residence in Malappuram on Saturday. While the content of their discussion remains undisclosed, confirmation of Anvar's candidacy surfaced within hours of their meeting, fuelling speculation about behind-the-scenes political negotiations. Anvar has also been engaged in earlier talks with the UDF regarding the Trinamool's potential inclusion in the alliance. Although Congress leaders reportedly offered the Trinamool associate membership status, Anvar rejected the offer, insisting instead on full membership for his party. The stalemate over this demand had cast uncertainty over his political direction -- until now. Anvar, known for his unpredictability and populist appeal, appears poised for a high-stakes return to electoral politics in Nilambur. With the Trinamool banking on his local clout and grassroots connect, the Nilambur by-election is likely to witness a keenly watched political battle. The Congress has fielded Aryadan Shoukath, whose father Aryadan Mohammed had represented the seat for a record eight terms till 2016 when he announced his retirement. However, Shoukath had lost the seat to Anvar in 2016. The CPI-M candidate is state Secretariat member M. Swaraj, and the BJP has fielded Mohan George. With Anvar's candidature, the Trinamool will be contesting from two of the five Assembly constituencies in four states that will be going for bypolls on June 19, one being Nilambur and the other being Kaliganj in Nadia district of West Bengal. In Kaliganj, it has fielded Alifa Ahmed, the daughter of the sitting party legislator, Nasiruddin Ahmed, whose sudden demise in February this year necessitated the bypolls. The three other assembly constituencies where by-polls will be held on June 19 are Kadi and Visavdar in Gujarat and Ludhiana West in Punjab. The Trinamool Congress had earlier made attempts to expand the party's base outside West Bengal, and then the party leadership mainly concentrated on states in the northeast like Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya. However, the electoral results were disastrous for the party.
