'I don't want to continue (as captain) in the Test format anymore,' Shanto said. 'This is not personal. I have taken the decision for the betterment of the team. I think this will help the team. I have been a part of the dressing room for the past few years. I think three captains (for the three international formats) is not sensible.
I don't know what the board will feel about this, and I will support their decision. But this is my personal decision.
I think three separate captains will be difficult for the team to deal with.'
He underlined that his decision was neither impulsive nor a reaction to the recent defeat.
'I would want that no one feels this decision is emotional, or that I am disappointed by something. I want to make this clear. This is for the betterment of the team.'
Shanto also shared that he had already communicated his intent to step down to the Bangladesh Cricket Board's cricket operations department 'some days back.'
Earlier this month, Shanto had also been replaced as Bangladesh's ODI captain, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz taking over the leadership duties in that format.

Despite mixed team results, Shanto's individual form as captain remained solid. He averaged 36.24 in Tests while leading, compared to 29.83 when not captaining. In Bangladesh's four Test wins under his captaincy, he averaged 37.16 with the bat.

Bad News For Bangladesh... Najmul Hossain Shanto Steps Down As Test Captain Due To THIS Reason

Following Bangladesh's 1-0 series defeat against Sri Lanka, Najmul Hossain Shanto has officially stepped down as the national Test captain. The decision came in the wake of a heavy loss in the second Test in Colombo, where Bangladesh were handed an innings and 78-run defeat, capping off a disappointing series for the visitors. After a closely fought draw in the opening Test, Bangladesh entered the final match aiming to secure vital World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 points. However, their batting faltered at crucial junctures, resulting in a comprehensive defeat that sparked leadership changes within the team. Shanto: 'This Is for the Team's Betterment' In a post-match interaction, Shanto clarified that his resignation was not driven by personal disappointment but by what he believed was best for the team's future. 'I don't want to continue [as captain] in the Test format anymore. This is not personal. I think this will help the team. Having three different captains across formats isn't practical. I've conveyed this to the board already,' Shanto told ESPNcricinfo. He added that this decision was communicated to the BCB's cricket operations department days before the match, and that it should not be linked to his recent removal from the ODI captaincy role. Leadership Transitions in Focus Earlier this year, Shanto relinquished the T20I captaincy, and just before this series, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) replaced him as the ODI skipper, naming Mehidy Hasan Miraz in his place. Despite those changes, Shanto had expressed a willingness to lead in the longer format until now. 'I just hope people don't view this as a reaction to the ODI decision. I've made this choice for the team, not because of any personal grievance,' he emphasized. Shanto's Record as Test Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto took charge of the Test team in late 2023 and led Bangladesh in 14 Test matches, registering 4 wins. Notable among them was a landmark victory over New Zealand in Sylhet, and a historic series whitewash in Pakistan in August last year. He also made headlines for scoring twin centuries in a single Test in Sri Lanka, becoming the first Bangladeshi captain to achieve the feat. With an average of 36.24 as captain, Shanto showed resilience with the bat but struggled to convert performances into consistent team success. What's Next for Bangladesh? Bangladesh's next Test assignment is scheduled for October 2025 against Ireland, giving the BCB ample time to select a new red-ball captain. Currently: Litton Das leads the T20I squad. Mehidy Hasan Miraz captains the ODI side. The BCB is yet to announce who will take over the Test leadership, though senior players like Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Litton Das could be in contention.

Shanto steps down as BAN's Test captain after 0-1 series loss to Sri Lanka

Following Bangladesh's innings-and-78-run loss to Sri Lanka in Colombo, Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down as Test captain, marking another shift in the team's leadership structure. The decision came on the heels of a 1-0 series defeat in the ongoing World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle, where Bangladesh failed to capitalise after a drawn opening Test. Heading into Colombo with the opportunity to secure vital points, the Tigers crumbled under pressure—particularly with the bat—and suffered a crushing loss. In the aftermath, Shanto announced he would no longer lead the red-ball team, citing the move as necessary for the team's progress. Shanto reveals his reason Shanto clarified that the choice to step away was not made out of emotion or frustration. According to him, having three different captains across formats creates inconsistency, and a more unified approach could benefit the national side. He said the decision had already been conveyed to the BCB's cricket operations department and emphasised that he did not want his actions interpreted as a reaction to recent decisions around ODI captaincy. Earlier this year, he was removed as ODI skipper in favour of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, despite previously expressing interest in continuing. Shanto's record as Bangladesh Test captain During his tenure as Test captain, Shanto led Bangladesh in 14 matches, winning four. His captaincy began with a memorable win over New Zealand in Sylhet and included a rare Test series whitewash in Pakistan. He also etched his name in the record books as the first Bangladesh skipper to score twin centuries in a Test against Sri Lanka. Though his personal form was respectable—averaging 36.24—results didn't always go Bangladesh's way. What's next for Bangladesh? With no Test series scheduled until October against Ireland, Bangladesh have time to name a new red-ball captain. Currently, Litton Das leads in T20Is, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz oversees the ODI squad. Shanto's decision now opens the door for a potential long-term restructure of Bangladesh's leadership across formats.
