Ilya Naishuller says he felt ‘lucky' to get Priyanka Chopra Jonas for ‘Heads of State': ‘She was the only actress I talked to'

Time of India18 hours ago
Priyanka Chopra Jonas was a joy to work with and the only choice for the female lead in "Heads of State", says filmmaker
Ilya Naishuller
about his latest action-comedy, which features the Indian actor with
John Cena
and
Idris Elba
.
The Russia-born musician-filmmaker, best known for directing Bob Odenkirk in action thriller "Nobody" as well as sci-fi film "Hardcore Henry", said as soon as they thought about approaching Priyanka for the role of Noel Bisset, an MI6 agent, everything "made total sense".
'She charmed me in 45 seconds'
"She's the only actress I talked to for this movie, I'll be honest. I was just like, 'If the call goes, we'll be lucky to have her'.
And I remember she charmed me in about 45 seconds flat over a Zoom call.
"She's wearing a big, homely sweater and just chilling on her couch. And we started talking, and I immediately understood we have quite a bit in common," Naishuller told PTI in an interview.
Naishuller on Priyanka's brave move from Bollywood to Hollywood
The director said he could see parallels between his journey in Hollywood with the way Priyanka, an already established star in India, made a space for herself in the US.

"She went from being so big in India to being like, 'You know what? I want to risk it and see what happens. I want to go out there and be ambitious and try to crack America'. It is a very difficult thing to do. It always is, no matter how big you are at home, and the fact that she went there and started that path, I was like, I deeply respect that and I admire that. It's courage," he said.
'She's either that charming or a fantastic actress' — or both!
Naishuller said while he felt good about their shared "commonalities", he realised that he was charmed by her presence.
"I just realised either she is playing the charm or she is that charming and that's her. And both things work, because one proves that she's a great actress, as I already knew, or she can be a great fun person to hang around with... And when we got to work, I was like, 'That was her.' She is that charming, fantastically warm person."
Why Priyanka was vital to the film
The filmmaker said Priyanka was always prepared and curious throughout the shooting of the movie that revolves around a newly-elected US President (Cena) and his more seasoned British counterpart, played by Elba.
They don't get along well but have to unite to fight a common enemy that wants to derail an important summit. They find an ally in Priyanka's Bisset.
"Every time we finish a scene and there's a relight, she'd pull up an apple box, sit right and be like, 'How's it going? What are you guys doing?' And that's the kind of vibe I really enjoy. So to balance out Idris Elba and John Cena, she had to be there. She was always like, 'Well, I'm a little bit of a third wheel'.
I'm like 'It's a tricycle'."
Naishuller said grew up on Jackie Chan movies and wanted to bring the same energy to "Heads of State", currently streaming on Prime Video.
"If you surround violence with comedy, the violence becomes punchier and you don't need to do that much to elicit a good chuckle. And it's the first time I've been trying to go for a movie that is outright trying to make you laugh because 'Nobody' was very reserved.
"There's a lot of chaos in this movie... I'm just trying to understand how to fit all that together...This is the first movie where I had to cut jokes. We had too many good jokes... When the bullets are flying, our guys are terrified, and that's actually funnier than them taking bullets over here and just saying wise lines. It's a ridiculous movie, but I wanted a grounded ridiculous movie, if that makes sense."
"Heads of State" also stars
Paddy Considine
, Stephen Root, Carla Gugino, Jack Quaid and Sarah Niles.
The movie is produced by Peter Safran and John Rickard. Cena and Elba also serve as executive producers.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Six minutes of drama! Why a fired-up Shubman Gill lost his cool at Lord's

Zak Crawley and Shubman Gill in London: A hundred, two gritty half-centuries, an excellent run-out and a fiery spell with the ball was not enough as it was six minutes of unadulterated drama in the dying stages of Day 3 which brought the Lord's to life. A fired-up India captain Shubman Gill was in England opener Zak Crawley 's face and had almost every Indian player converging towards the pitch during that moment. The umpires intervened to cool things down but the damage had been done. Gill had enough of the theatrics and the call for the physio was the moment he exploded. After a round of applause, he charged towards Crawley and did an impact player signal, and also fired some not so pleasant statements with aggressive hand gestures. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The stump mic was alert enough to pick up the four words which went viral on social media. "Show some fu*g b**s," yelled Gill as the right-hander did all he could to deny India an over from the pavilion end. He succeeded and Jasprit Bumrah , equally annoyed, stood on top of his run-up for the final delivery of the day's play. He bowled an absolute peach but Crawley survived. The opener immediately turned back and was brisk walking to the dressing room as the umpires flipped the bails to signal end of day's play. A good old fashioned Day 3 got a spicy finish and has now set-up the remaining two days, and the series very nicely. The series hasn't had any dramatic moment yet and the episode on the third day could well fire up proceedings, and lend some flavor and colour to action. Both camps were asked about the final over and KL Rahul understood why Crawley was doing what he did, and also explained why Gill was so fired in those few minutes. Poll Do you believe this incident will ignite more drama in the remaining matches? Definitely Maybe Unlikely "I am an opener so I can understand what he was doing but Shubman Gill was fired up because we wanted to bowl two overs in the six minutes before stumps. Lot of theatrics and everyone was fired up," said Rahul at post-day presser. From the hosts camp, Tim Southee, part of the coaching set-up, felt this is part and parcel of the game, and reiterated both sides have played in the right spirit in the series so far. ‘Don't Believe In Divorce': Amitabh Bachchan Once Addressed Tension With Jaya Amid Rekha Controversy

In the 80s, rumours of Amitabh Bachchan's affair with Rekha persisted, but he denied divorce to Jaya Bachchan due to his 'Indian values'. Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jaya Bachchan were the most hit headline-makers of the 80s. An already married Bachchan was rumoured to be smitten by Rekha back in the day. However, nothing materialised since the Sholay star once said that he doesn't 'believe in divorce" amid rumours of tension in his marriage with Jaya. Jaya Bachchan, reportedly, would dismiss rumours of her husband's affair in interviews. As written by Yasser Usman in his book Rekha: The Untold Story, published by Juggernaut, Jaya reportedly once said, 'Let the whole world say what they want. He [Amitabh Bachchan] has made a commitment to me and he has to have the courage (to say he's in love with somebody else!), and if he is doing something behind my back, it's his problem. Not my problem. He has to live with it. And with his conscience!" Then came Amitabh's response to growing tensions in his marriage. An excerpt from the book read, 'Without taking Rekha's name, Amitabh responded to the reported tensions in his marriage: 'A divorce will never happen in our case. I don't believe in divorce because my basic instincts are Indian. I made an absolutely first-class choice when I took Jaya as my wife'." Another portion from the book said, 'This is the closest that Amitabh ever came to even admitting that all was not well in the Bachchan household. But Rekha kept fuelling the media fire. In an interview with Stardust, she made a strange claim: that Jaya had invited her over to the Bachchan home one day. 'Jaya did not mind the relationship as long as she thought her husband was only having a fling. It's when she realised that he was really emotionally involved, that is when it began hurting her. She called me for dinner one evening and though we spoke about everything but him, before I left that day, she made sure to tell me, 'I will never leave Amit whatever happens'." In 1981, Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan even starred in a film together – a casting that only Yash Chopra could have dared to put together. Interesingly, the film's plot mirrored the personal lives of the lead actors. The reason, it continues to stay relevant even today. view comments First Published: July 12, 2025, 16:58 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Metro... In Dino' Box Office collection day 9: Sara Ali Khan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Pankaj Tripathi's film sees BIG jump on second Saturday; earns over Rs 33 crore

Anurag Basu's new film 'Metro... In Dino' is taking moviegoers back into the lanes of love, heartbreak and hope, all set in the middle of a busy city. Released on 4th July, this film brings together a big bunch of actors we all know and love. From Sara Ali Khan and Aditya Roy Kapur to Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi , Konkona Sen Sharma , Ali Fazal, Anupam Kher and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Many have called it a sort of spiritual sequel to Basu's popular 2007 film 'Life... In A Metro'. This time, too, he gives us a slice-of-life story that looks at different people and their tangled relationships. The film's box office run started off calm but picked up pace. On day 9, the film's collection saw a big jump. A decent start at the box office According to Sacnilk, 'Metro... Dino' got off to a decent start in cinemas. In its first seven days, the film collected an estimated Rs 26.85 crore in India. On its opening Friday, it made Rs 3.5 crore. Saturday brought in better numbers with Rs 6 crore, and by Sunday, it reached its first peak of Rs 7.25 crore. As the weekdays rolled in, the film's earnings dipped a little, which is common for most films. Monday saw Rs 2.5 crore, Tuesday grew slightly to Rs 3 crore, followed by Rs 2.35 crore on Wednesday and Rs 2.25 crore on Thursday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo By the end of its first week, the film was close to Rs 27 crore. Big Saturday boost on day 9 Day 8, which was a Friday again, showed early estimates of Rs 2.25 crore. But on day 9, according to early estimates by Sacnilk, the film saw a surge in collection and minted around Rs 4.65 crore on Saturday. This took its total to an impressive Rs 33.85 crore. This jump on the second Saturday has come as a pleasant surprise and shows that audiences are warming up to the film more and more. Day 9 occupancy The occupancy in theatres on Saturday, 12th July, also showed how many people stepped out to watch the film. Overall, 'Metro... In Dino' had a 44.84% Hindi occupancy that day. The morning shows had around 18.63% seats filled. This went up sharply in the afternoon shows to 47.86%. By evening, it was even better at 56.28%, and night shows did the best with 56.59% occupancy. 'Metro... In Dino' review 'The Times of India' gave the film a fair review, pointing out both the good and the not-so-good bits. The review read, "Despite being largely pleasant, some tracks don't quite add up, feel uneven and don't know where to end. After an engaging build up, the second half feels a tad stretched. You also wish the story scratched the surface a little more, especially for Konkona-Neena Gupta track, where the actors have the potential and gravitas to dig deeper. " However, the review also praised the film for giving Bollywood something it's been missing lately. It said, "There has been a scarcity of love stories in Bollywood and Metro In Dino, elevated by some fine performances, fills that gap perfectly. It is a breezy, intimate watch tailor-made for a rainy day."
