Why Chelsea's latest Xavi Simons transfer is set to fail as Blues try to bring in £60m RB Leipzig star

The Sun9 hours ago
CHELSEA'S bid to include Christopher Nkunku in negotiations to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig is set to fail.
Former Leipzig star Nkunku, 27, is the latest Blues player to be offered as bait as talks continue over Dutch playmaker Simons.

But the France international forward is understood not to be keen on returning to his old club.
And Leipzig would not be able to match Nkunku 's current wages at Stamford Bridge, which reports in Germany claim could be as high as £17million per year.
The Frenchman's actual salary is believed to be considerably lower yet still beyond Leipzig's budget.
Sporting director Marcel Schafer is under pressure to slash wage costs by 20 per cent as the Bundlesliga club adjust to the financial reality of not playing in European competition this season.
And Leipzig are for now standing firm on their £60m valuation of Simons.
Agent Ali Barat, who represents Chelsea stars Moises Caicedo and Nicolas Jackson, is working for Simons in his bid to land a move to the Premier League.
Carney Chukwuemeka, Renato Veiga and Tyrique George have all been linked with moves to Leipzig as part of the Simons negotiations.
Swap deals are now rare in football because of financial regulations and the way transfer payments are calculated for accounting purposes.
But in any case Leipzig have so far said 'nein, danke' to all proposals they should buy one or more Blues players to help Chelsea fund a separate deal for Simons.
Nkunku is among the big names Chelsea still want to move on before the transfer window closes.
He arrived from Leipzig in the summer of 2023 in a £52m deal after helping the club win the German Cup in what turned out to be his final season there.
But Nkunku picked up a serious knee injury in pre-season that delayed his debut until December.
And he has never established himself as a first-team regular at Stamford Bridge amid a huge turnover of players.
Chelsea have signed Joao Pedro and Liam Delap as centre-forwards this summer for a combined £90m.
Nkunku did travel with the squad to the Club World Cup and made six appearances, scoring once in the Blues' successful campaign.
But he is even further down the pecking order now following the arrivals of Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian, who represented former clubs Borussia Dortmund and Palmeiras respectively in the competition in the USA.
And Chelsea still want to add Simons and Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho to Enzo Maresca 's attacking options.
Nkunku needs a fresh start and Chelsea want to sell him.
But unless something significant changes, he will not be returning to Leipzig to grease the wheels of a deal for Simons.

Archie Manning's comments shift 2026 No. 1 pick odds market

August 11 - Grandpa Archie knows best? At the least, the NFL draft futures market trusts the elder Manning has some insight when it comes to the pro timetable of his grandson and Texas quarterback Arch Manning. Previously the prevailing favorite to be drafted first in the 2026 NFL Draft, odds shifted following the Texas Monthly interview with family patriarch Archie Manning during which he declared Arch Manning, a third-year sophomore, will not be a one-and-done starter. "Arch isn't going to do that. He'll be at Texas," Archie Manning said. Archie Manning was the No. 2 pick in the 1971 draft out of Ole Miss. Two of his sons, Peyton and Eli, were drafted No. 1 overall. But oddsmakers are buying the idea Arch Manning will stay at Texas through the 2026 season. He's entering his first year as the Longhorns' starter, replacing Quinn Ewers, and viewed as a Heisman Trophy frontrunner as he leads a loaded Texas squad that just earned its first preseason No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press poll. FanDuel odds set Arch Manning as the Heisman favorite at +700, ahead of Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik (+900) and LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier (+900). Nussmeier jumped to the favorite spot in No. 1 pick futures for 2026 after Archie Manning's comments. Nussmeier (+340), Klubnik (+380), South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers (+380) and Penn State quarterback Drew Allar (+470) are now ahead of Arch Manning (+850) at FanDuel. --Field Level Media

Raskin affected by 'uncertainty' over Rangers future

Rangers midfielder Nico Raskin has been impacted by "uncertainty" over his future at the club, according to head coach Russell Belgium international has been linked with big money moves away from Ibrox and Martin concedes that contact from external parties has had an effect."There's been a bit of uncertainty about him this summer, for sure," Martin said before Tuesday's second leg of the Champions League third qualifying round tie at Viktoria Plzen."Not from people ringing us, but I think from people ringing him, definitely."I think that's affected his approach, not in terms of professionalism and stuff, but he's a young man, of course it's going to have an impact at some point." Raskin started the first three games of Rangers' season, but was left out of the starting XI for the first leg of the tie against Viktoria Plzen, which Martin's side won 3-0 at 24-year-old was again benched for Saturday's Premiership match against Dundee, but impressed as a substitute in the 1-1 draw. Martin expressed his delight at how Raskin has responded to being dropped."He came out of the team for reasons that me and him spoke about, and his reaction has been top, like really, really brilliant," he said."He's a really fantastic player, and he's a young man that I'm getting to know all the time, and actually I really like his character and personality."It's my job to make sure, playing for this football club, whoever you are, the demands are really clear, in whatever position you play." 'Hopefully we can get to end of window' When asked if he expects Raskin to stay at Rangers beyond this summer, Martin said it would take a "mind-blowing" offer for the Ibrox club to consider selling one of last season's standout performers."I don't think we're in a position where we have to sell anyone," Martin said. "I don't think we're in a position where we want to lose some of the best performers last season, that we think can become really top performers for us moving forward."Unless someone comes in and blows our minds and everyone decides, the player, the club, that it's the best for everyone and then we can make sure we're in a position to replace them with someone else. "It's the same for any club in world football now. I don't think there is a club that's immune to that really."Hopefully, we can get to the end of the window. He's played brilliantly. The window shuts, he's still here, and then we can keep improving and keep kicking on."
