Hornets' Kon Knueppel is honoring a Hall of Famer with jersey number choice

USA Todaya day ago
After wearing No. 7 for one season at Duke, rookie guard Kon Knueppel opted to keep that same jersey number to begin his career in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets.
Knueppel had previously worn No. 33 at Wisconsin Lutheran High School because it was the number that his mother, Chari, wore at Green Bay. She was inducted into Green Bay's hall of fame, and her number was retired after she left as the women's all-time leading scorer.
The fourth pick was also inspired to wear No. 33 because of Hall of Famer Larry Bird. He was forced to change when he arrived in Durham since it is retired to honor Grant Hill, so Knueppel chose No. 7, the number Bird wore on the Dream Team with USA Basketball.
Knueppel was a second-team All-ACC selection last season, averaging 14.4 points, four rebounds, 2.7 assists and one steal in 39 games on 40.6% shooting from 3-point range. He scored in double figures in all but seven games, including a season-high 28 points and eight assists on March 13.
The 20-year-old helped the Hornets to the NBA Summer League championship, averaging 15.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.2 steals in five appearances. He was named MVP of the title game after scoring a team-high 21 points and five rebounds.
Knueppel is a part of a stacked rookie class for the Hornets and has helped create plenty of anticipation heading into next season. He will do so with a familiar number on his jersey.
Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA.

Wizards advised against signing former 76ers star Ben Simmons

Wizards advised against signing former 76ers star Ben Simmons originally appeared on The Sporting News The Washington Wizards are in the midst of a rebuild, with several promising players poised to earn meaningful minutes next season. Washington boasts a deep pool of young talent, including Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George, Bub Carrington, Tre Johnson, AJ Johnson and Cam Whitmore. Alongside this youth movement, the team also features veterans Khris Middleton and CJ McCollum. While the Wizards could explore adding another veteran presence in three-time All-Star Ben Simmons, Tyrone Montgomery of advised against such a move. 'With his skill set, he would be able to help the Wizards in many different ways, possibly playing every position for them,' he wrote. 'However, it could come as a challenge for him mentally, ultimately resulting in a distraction to the Wizards in the end.' MORE: Star guard Tyrese Maxey breaks down blueprint for Sixers' success ahead of 2025-26 season Simmons' best days are behind him. While his defensive versatility is tempting, the Wizards should prioritize giving their young players larger roles. With the team unlikely to compete in the near future, adding the former 76ers Rookie of the Year could hinder the development of Washington's young core. Rumors have already circulated about potential buyouts for the team's veterans, with Washington likely to fully embrace its youth movement. Simmons, who has bounced around the league in recent years, doesn't fit that mold. He has also dealt with injury concerns, appearing in just 108 regular-season games over the past four NBA seasons. His best years came with Philadelphia, where he averaged 15.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.7 steals while shooting 56.0 percent from the field in 33.9 minutes per game over four seasons. Report: Celtics trade 9-year veteran, draft picks to Jazz for rookie RJ Luis

The Boston Celtics have reportedly agreed to trade nine-year NBA veteran Georges Niang to the Utah Jazz in a cost-cutting move, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. Boston will also send the Jazz two future second-round picks in exchange for two-way rookie RJ Luis. The Jazz used part of their $26.6 million trade exception created when they moved John Collins to the LA Clippers to acquire Niang, who played with the Jazz from 2017-2021. By moving Niang, the Celtics reportedly reduced their payroll and luxury tax by $50 million, according to Yossi Gozlan of The front office has cut approximately $286 million from its expenses since the start of the offseason. Luis was a consensus second-team All-American last season at St. John's, averaging 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, two assists and 1.4 steals on 33.6% shooting from 3-point range as a junior. He was also named the Big East Player of the Year, becoming the third player in program history to win. The 6-foot-6 guard signed a two-way contract with the Jazz on July 7 after going undrafted. He didn't play in either the Salt Lake City Summer League or the NBA Summer League due to left knee soreness sustained during the predraft process. Before playing two years at St. John's, Luis spent one season at UMass, averaging 11.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals. He was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Freshman Team.
