WAK Sibu Festival 2025 returns with bigger line-up, eyes 10,000 visitors this June 6-8
SIBU (May 23): The second edition of the What About Kuching (WAK) Sibu Festival 2025 is set to take place from June 6 to 8 at the Sibu Heritage Centre, aiming to attract about 10,000 visitors, announced festival manager Brendan Chin.
Reflecting on last year's inaugural edition, he recalled that the community-driven event attracted about 4,000 visitors.
'While most were locals, our survey also revealed that some visitors came from Singapore and even as far as Australia.
'This year, we expect about 10,000 visitors,' he said during the WAK Sibu Festival 2025 Calendar Reveal press conference here yesterday.
Adding on, Chin said this year's edition builds on the energy and success of last year, with over 20 unique events featuring a mix of performing arts, visual exhibitions, cultural showcases, music, lifestyle markets, and hands-on workshops.
He pointed out that among the programme's highlights is the iconic theatre piece 'Emily of Emerald Hill', to be performed by veteran actress Pearlly Chuah – a captivating showcase of Singaporean-Malaysian heritage in Sibu.
He also shared that Time Signature, Kuching's celebrated instrumental band, is set to return with an electrifying set of Top 40 hits from across the decades.
To spruce up the atmosphere, there will also be DJ sets featuring DJ Sotong, DJ Steph, DJ Losan, and DJ APP.
'Other highlights include exhibitions like 'Into the Wild', 'Celebrating Malaysia', and 'All About Arts: Elements of Nature', offering diverse visual storytelling by Sarawakian artists and photographers.
'We are also especially proud to feature a fashion show and exhibition by Edric Ong and Melor by Melinda Omar—both of whom recently presented collections at the London Fashion Week,' added Chin.
He further mentioned that the festival will also host a curated selection of creative vendors from Kuching to join the Rainbow Market, creating opportunities for creative entrepreneurs to reach new audiences in Sibu.
'So, expect a vibrant blend of craft, food and lifestyle offerings every evening at the festival site.
'Every event is designed to be accessible, inclusive and community-driven, true to our WAK philosophy 'by the community, for the community'.
'We want this to be a platform where local talent can shine, while also learning and collaborating with creatives from across Sarawak and beyond,' said Chin.
Additionally, he announced that the launching ceremony will be held on June 6.
Meanwhile, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley expressed delight to see the return of the WAK movement to the riverine town.
'This festival represents more than just performances and exhibitions; it is a powerful expression of creativity, identity, and community spirit.
'I am especially proud that this platform not only highlights the talents of our local creatives, but also fosters cross-regional collaborations with performers and vendors from Kuching, Kuala Lumpur, and beyond.
'This kind of exchange strengthens our cultural ecosystem, and puts Sibu on the map as a regional creative hub,' he added.

"I've been to Kuala Lumpur many times, and I'm sure to be back in the years to come," said Cheung as he gave his Malaysian fans "10 out of 10" marks for being "simply amazing". Cheung debuted in 1985 with his first studio album Smile, which sold over 400,000 copies in Hong Kong. His subsequent albums experienced commercial success as well, with 14 of his albums becoming platinum certified. Malaysian alternative rock band Servants has officially launched their debut album tour, marking a significant milestone in their eight-year journey as a band. The 'Love Shouldn't Hurt This Much' tour successfully opened on 9th August 2025, at RUAS in Penang, bringing the emotional depth of their debut full-length album to live audiences for the first time. A Long-Awaited Live Experience For Servants – comprising vocalist Amirul Nazreen, guitarists Imran Khoo and Afif Jaafar, bassist Muhd Ridzuan, and drummer Rohaizad Rahmat – this tour represents more than just promotional dates. It's the realisation of plans that were derailed during their 2019 EP era when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of their intended touring schedule. 'This is our first tour ever,' the band explains. 'When we released our EP 'Holding On While Letting Go,' we had planned a tour that couldn't happen due to the pandemic. Now we want to gain new experiences by managing this tour ourselves.' Strategic Route Planning The three-city tour was carefully planned based on direct fan engagement. 'We hope that with this opportunity, more people can discover and appreciate their work.' This approach turns each show into a celebration of local music scenes, perfectly matching the independent spirit that has defined Servants since 2016. Taking Their Music To New Territories The challenge for any band touring behind a deeply personal album is translating intimate, emotional material to live settings. 'Love Shouldn't Hurt This Much,' released 15th November 2024, deals with heavy themes including mental health struggles, addiction, loss, and trauma across its nine tracks and 31-minute runtime. Songs like 'Contrast,' which tackles addiction through complex time signatures, and 'Past Midnight,' featuring collaboration with Dean from Kids on the Move about battling overthinking, present unique challenges for live interpretation. The album's centerpiece, 'Selamanya Bukan Milik Kita,' originally features keys, strings, and poetry that require creative solutions for live performance. Beyond these artistic challenges, the tour serves strategic purposes for geographical expansion. 'We want to bring our music to states we've never visited for live performances,' they explain. This expansion into new markets is crucial for building a sustainable touring career and developing the fanbase necessary for future, larger-scale tours. 'Our main objective is to expand our reach and introduce our music to new listeners,' they explain. #SHOWBIZ: Four music icons, one family legacy
FOR the first time, four of Malaysia's most powerful musical voices — all connected by family ties — will perform together on one stage. The historic 'Empat Live In Kuala Lumpur 2025' concert promises to be a landmark event in local entertainment. "This is such an exciting project," shared singer Anuar Zain. "None of us ever thought that fate would bring the four of us — my elder sister Ziana, our niece Ernie, and her husband Syamel — together not only in the same industry but now performing side-by-side on the same stage," said the 55-year-old, who first rose to fame in the mid-1980s as half of the duo Anuar & Ellina. The concert is scheduled for Oct 18 at Mega Star Arena, Kuala Lumpur. It is set to be one of the most meaningful musical collaborations in Malaysia's music scene, distinguished by the heartfelt family connection shared by the four performers. Dream comes true Anuar explained that the idea for the concert had been in the works for two to three years, but they had to wait for the right moment due to everyone's busy schedules. "This will be more than just a concert. "It's a celebration of family ties, of the talent we are grateful for, and a token of appreciation for the incredible support we've received from fans of all generations. "We truly hope the audience will come with a spirit of love, unity, and appreciation for the musical journey we've shared," he said. His 33-year-old niece, Ernie Zakri, echoed his sentiments, describing the opportunity to share the stage with her musical heroes as both emotional and surreal. "I cried when I was asked to be a part of this," Ernie recounted. "To be on stage with them, two singers I've admired since I was a child and watched working so hard to achieve greatness, is beyond a dream come true. This is a long-time dream of mine, which is finally happening." A new single Organised by Anuar Zain Network, the concert will be helmed by director Jennifer Thompson and music director Sze Wan to ensure an unforgettable sonic experience. Adding to the excitement, the four artistes will release a brand-new single, specially composed by popular songwriter and producer Edry Abdul Halim. The single is expected next month as a lead-up to the big night. "I've worked with Edry before, most notably on the song 'Sedetik Lebih'. During our recent meeting, he presented us with two options. One of them immediately resonated with all four of us. The moment it was played, we just knew it had to be that one. We were all in agreement without needing to say much," said Annuar. Edry, who is currently based in Manchester, will handle the song's mixing from his personal studio there. "He's a brilliant musician who understands each of our vocal characters, which makes the entire process more efficient and natural," Anuar elaborated. Anuar hopes this family collaboration will become a legacy for the future, both for their family and the Malaysian music scene. "We want this to be more than a one-time show. We want it to become a legacy that celebrates music, family, and the connection we share with our fans." As both a performer and organiser, Anuar is committed to delivering a top-tier experience. "My top priority is the sound system," he said. 'You can have great vocals and stunning costumes, but if the sound system is poor just because someone wants to cut costs, it will haunt me for months. For me, a concert must have excellent sound. When our performances are uploaded on social media, I want people to clearly hear the richness of our vocals and musical arrangements. "Fans might not notice technical aspects like the sound system, but as the organiser, I carry that responsibility. People are paying good money to attend this show, and we want to ensure they leave feeling completely satisfied." With powerhouse performances, heartfelt storytelling, and the powerful thread of family running through it all, 'Empat Live In Kuala Lumpur 2025' is set to be a once-in-a-generation experience.
