Colchester United's under-21s start new season in style with big win over Wigan
A superb first-half display seemed to put the U's well in control of their first league match of the campaign.
However, things could have been so different as in the first minute, a telling cross from the left for Wigan was met by a volley from Reece Greenhalgh which went just wide.

After some good defending by Kuari Mushani who held off his opponent, the U's then took the lead after eight minutes.
A storming run down the right by David Nkrumah resulted in his cross being turned home at the near post by Kien Connolly.
It got even better five minutes later as Kai Martin's superb cross-field pass found Kaion Lisbie who rifled his shot into the net.
Now Colchester were dominating as Martin's cross flew across the box, then neat build up by the away side ended with a shot by Harrison Rimmer being saved.
Lisbie and Martin fed Nkrumah who cut along the byline but his cross was blocked.
A loose ball then ran out to Greenhalgh who shot just wide of the right hand hand post.
Max Jolliffe linked with Connolly but the effort was blocked with Martin driving the rebound wide.
Martin then made it 3-0 on 27 minutes, following a superb free-kick that beat the keeper to his right.
Cole Simms' overhead kick went wide for Wigan, who got back in the game on 53 minutes.

A rare error by Harrison Chamberlain saw him lose the ball after he seemingly caught it and Simms capitalised, after the home keeper's attempt to throw out hit his opponent.
Wigan went close to a second when Rimmer's flick at the near post from a corner went just wide while at the other end, Martin's superbly-taken free-kick was well saved by Matthew Corran to his left.
Building from a Wigan attack, a ball found U's trialist C on the right but Connolly failed to get real power and direction on his header while soon after, Martin fed in Connolly but the keeper saved well to his left.
'Took a worldie to beat us': U's fans' verdict on Carabao Cup exit
Chamberlain blocked an effort with his legs before Colchester sealed victory on 87 minutes when a midfield pass found the run of Makise Evans, who moved on to score.
There was still time for Chamberlain to save Harrison Bettini's snap shot but Colchester were deserved winners.

Rio Ferdinand 'loves' $135M-rated midfielder linked with Liverpool and Man Utd
Manchester United kicked off the new Premier League campaign on a disappointing note with a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. Despite the setback, Ruben Amorim's team can take some solace from the encouraging performances of new acquisitions Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Attention will now turn to striker Benjamin Sesko to provide the crucial goals following United's weekend showing. United supporters remain optimistic that a fresh midfielder will arrive before the summer transfer window shuts on 1 September. Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, who has previously been linked with Liverpool, have emerged as the most regularly discussed targets in recent weeks. READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news as cult hero 'accelerates' exit after new signings READ MORE: 'I won trophies at Liverpool - but now my sons play for Manchester City' Liverpool is not expected to swoop for Wharton this summer, with a center-back and forward at the top of the Merseyside club's transfer shortlist. However, there's a chance Wharton could be linked with Liverpool again in future transfer windows, if United doesn't make a move for him this summer. Whilst Baleba's transfer seems unlikely with Brighton refusing to lower their £100 million ($135.2 million) valuation, former United center-back Rio Ferdinand has called on the club to pursue the latter. As reported by The Independent, Palace could also demand £100 million for Wharton this summer, perhaps even more. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand commented: "We've been talking about Baleba, he's been the hot topic for the last month or so, but before that, Adam Wharton was one of the guys I was saying. "He's the nearest to a Michael Carrick type, who's a controller, who can play, who plays forward from that deeper line position at times. "He can be an eight if you need him to be and can run on at times if need be, but he's more of a conductor and can control things. "I watched him in a couple of games last season against big teams like Man City and Liverpool, and he looks unfazed. He looks ready for a big occasion. "He enjoys pressure, can play under pressure, and the game kind of slows down when the ball is around him. I love him. I think he's a fantastic footballer." All attention is expected to focus on Wharton once more this campaign, should he stay at Selhurst Park. The 21-year-old was ruled out for nearly three months due to a groin problem last term but came back to deliver a standout performance in the club's FA Cup success.

Chelsea: Aston Villa closing in on Nicolas Jackson
Unai Emery wants to reunite with his former Senegalese protégé to strengthen the Villans' attack. Chelsea: Aston Villa closing in on Nicolas Jackson Aston Villa has recently set its sights on Nicolas Jackson. The Senegalese striker is of great interest to the Villans, who are reported to have already begun negotiations with the Blues for his transfer ahead of the close of the summer window. Aston Villa has placed Nicolas Jackson high on its shortlist of priorities for August. The Birmingham club is closely monitoring his situation at Chelsea and has already made contact with the London club's board. Unai Emery is eager to reunite with the player he helped develop at Villarreal in 2022, before Jackson's move to Stamford Bridge. The Spanish manager of the Villans knows the qualities of the Senegal international inside out. He had already tried to sign him in the summer of 2023, but Chelsea beat Villa Park to the punch in that race. This time, Emery has a fresh opportunity to bring back his former number nine, especially since the Blues seem open to negotiations. Can Aston Villa meet the price for Nicolas Jackson? Chelsea has recently adjusted its financial demands for Jackson. The London club initially asked for €115 million for their striker, but is now reportedly willing to accept an offer of €60 million. This price drop makes the deal more accessible for Aston Villa, although the sum remains significant for the club's finances. According to the latest news on Tuesday, August 19, the Villans currently favor a loan move. Will Chelsea accept this offer? Stay tuned…
