Fahmi: PM clarifies judicial appointments, urges party unity

SHAH ALAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on all parties, including those within PKR who may no longer share the same views, to "move on" after issues concerning judicial appointments were addressed.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said this following a closed-door meeting between Anwar and PKR members and leaders today.
When asked about the essence of the prime minister's message, Fahmi said several matters were clarified, including those related to judicial appointments, which he said had been resolved, with earlier allegations proven baseless.
"On the appointment of the Chief Justice, the prime minister said that all the slander and accusations that had been circulating have now been answered. The appointment process followed what is stated in the Federal Constitution.
"The names submitted were those recommended by the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC). There were no names outside of this list, and the process was in full compliance with the JAC Act and Article 122B of the Constitution," he said.
Fahmi also dismissed allegations of interference in judicial appointments, adding that Anwar had welcomed criticisms raised by non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
"In fact, most responses, including that from the Bar Council, were positive and served as a reminder that this is not just about appointments but about strengthening the reform process and institutional integrity," he said.
Meanwhile, PKR vice-president Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said all parties should embrace the prime minister's advice and suggestions, especially on reconciliation.
"We must be at peace, act with integrity and remain united because this party is our family, our home, and we must protect it, especially now that the internal elections are over," he said.
In a related development, PKR Youth deputy chief and Kota Damansara assemblyman Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim said the prime minister also addressed several matters during the meeting, including the controversy surrounding the Chief Justice's appointment, which he said had been blown out of proportion.
"The prime minister reminded members and voters not to be swayed by the opposition's narrative.
"The issues being raised stem from individuals with poor track records in the judiciary. He (Anwar) made it clear to members not to be influenced, because when the truth comes out, there's really nothing there," he said.

Tun Dr Mahathir Calls For Anwar's Resignation, Says 'No Need To Wait For Elections'

Subscribe to our FREE Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called for the current Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to resign immediately, citing his alleged lack of governance ability and the various problems facing the country. Speaking at a political rally titled 'Himpunan Mandat Negarawan' (Statesmen's Mandate Gathering) held at Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in Alor Setar on Thursday evening (17 July), Mahathir emphasised that while prime ministerial positions typically change through general elections, there are precedents in multiple countries where prime ministers have voluntarily resigned due to public pressure. 'I myself resigned from the prime ministerial position due to party pressure. Now Anwar faces even broader public opposition, so he should resign immediately,' Mahathir said during his speech. The 100-year-old former leader argued that resignation should not wait for elections, stating: 'If the people are dissatisfied, the prime minister should resign.' International Examples Cited Mahathir provided several international examples to support his argument, including that of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who resigned following public anger over COVID-19 regulation violations. Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down following large-scale public protests, and Japanese prime ministers, who traditionally resign when facing misconduct, do so without waiting for elections. 'As prime minister, one should consider the people's feelings,' he said. The former premier criticised Anwar's governance, alleging the mismanagement of national wealth and the cancellation of various subsidies provided to the people, which led to public hardship. 'Today, everyone has gathered here because we face the same problem – our country is wealthy, but the people remain poor. This is clearly the result of incompetent governance,' Mahathir stated. He claimed that many Malaysians currently face food insecurity and that some people, under tremendous pressure, have lost their sanity and resorted to suicide or violence against family members, attributing these issues to poverty. Old Wounds, New Battles Mahathir noted that people have organised various gatherings to express dissatisfaction with the current government and to pressure Anwar to resign from his position as Prime Minister. The rally represents the latest in a series of political challenges facing Anwar's administration since he assumed the role of prime minister. The relationship between Mahathir and Anwar has been marked by turbulence, stemming from political rivalry and a complicated history that includes periods of both partnership and conflict. The animosity is rooted in envy and the fear of political replacement, particularly during the early days of their time in UMNO, where Mahathir felt threatened by Anwar's rising popularity. Anwar had previously expressed regret that Mahathir never changed, highlighting the enduring nature of their political differences despite their shared history in Malaysian politics. Speaking to reporters after a closed-door meeting between Anwar and PKR Selangor leaders today, Fahmi said the Prime Minister, who is also PKR president, urged party members and branch leaders to respect those differing opinions and move forward together to strengthen the party. "The Prime Minister has clearly stated that for a few MPs who differ in opinion on certain issues, he does not intend to take any action. They have the right to express their views. "He has also asked all branch chiefs and party members to understand this and move on,' Fahmi said. Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said that at the meeting, Anwar also advised newly elected branch leaders to adopt an inclusive approach when appointing their respective committee members. "The Prime Minister emphasised that even those who lost in the recent party elections or who are not from their own camp should be included as part of a united team for the sake of the party's overall strength,' he said. Additionally, Fahmi said Anwar also informed party leaders that the appointment of State Leadership Council (MPN) Chairs will be finalised before the end of this month and instructed party machinery to start mobilising on the ground in August to boost grassroots support. "The Prime Minister only advised the King after consultations with the Conference of Rulers. The process fully complied with constitutional procedures,' said Fahmi, adding that Anwar clarified no judges were dismissed in contrast to previous administrations. Fahmi said that Anwar also welcomed criticisms from institutions such as the Malaysian Bar and Bersih regarding the judicial appointments, noting that what matters most is the continued independence of the judiciary. "The Prime Minister stressed that the judiciary must remain free from interference, whether from the legislative or the executive branch,' said Fahmi. Today's meeting, which lasted nearly an hour, was attended by several senior PKR leaders, including vice-presidents Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, PKR Youth Chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, and Women's Chief Fadhlina Sidek. - BERNAMA

PKR can suspend us but we'll still speak up, says Rafizi

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli and eight other MPs from PKR had called for a public inquiry into delays in the appointment of top judicial positions. PETALING JAYA : Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli has fired back at calls to suspend him and eight other MPs from the party for pushing for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) on judicial appointments and alleged interference in the judiciary. Rafizi said suspensions would do nothing to solve the underlying issues and would not deter them from fulfilling their duties as elected representatives. 'This move only reinforces the perception that PKR no longer tolerates dissent, especially when other MPs like Hassan Karim have criticised the prime minister even more harshly in the past, yet faced no consequences,' he said in a post on X. Rafizi also said that the suspensions would reduce PKR's numbers in Parliament to 22, fewer than DAP, Barisan Nasional (BN), and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). PKR currently holds 31 seats in the Dewan Rakyat. The nine MPs that the PKR division chiefs are seeking to suspend are Rafizi (Pandan); Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Setiawangsa); Rodziah Ismail (Ampang); Wong Chen (Subang); Zahir Hassan (Wangsa Maju); Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (Balik Pulau); Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (Ledang); S Kesavan (Sungai Siput), and Onn Abu Bakar (Batu Pahat). The group called for the establishment of an RCI and a hearing by a parliamentary select committee following delays in the appointment of the chief justice and Court of Appeal president, which they said amounted to a constitutional crisis. PKR division chiefs said the MPs' actions not only breached party discipline and ethics, but also cast a negative light on the prime minister's leadership and opened the door to political manipulation by rivals. Rafizi today pushed back against the group's critics, reminding them that PKR was built on freedom of speech and activism, not blind loyalty or the silencing of dissent. 'We were once popular with the public because we were the fastest and loudest in championing their issues,' he said. 'That's what we 'old-timers' practised until PKR succeeded in forming the government, opening the door for new leaders, such as these division chiefs, to now hold high positions.'
