Alien: Earth TV series captures aesthetic of original film, says producer

The sci-fi drama, from Emmy-winning producer Noah Hawley, is based on the acclaimed franchise, which began with Sir Ridley's 1979 film starring Sigourney Weaver as warrant officer Ellen Ripley who takes on an extra-terrestrial lifeform called the Xenomorph.
The new eight-episode series sees Wendy, played by US actress Sydney Chandler, and a group of tactical soldiers make a discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat.
Speaking to the PA news agency at the European premiere of the series, executive producer David W Zucker said: 'Above and beyond what I think is just a rip-roaring great yarn, is that Noah was able to really capture the aesthetic of the original, the analogue nature of the original, if not some of the literal sets of the original film, but then take us on a journey that's very evocative of what the films have explored.
'But, in a way that one can only do in series television, expanded vertically and horizontally, that feels like a boundless type of story that can explore a lot of the themes and these, even present day challenges of transhumanism, in a way that really compels and fascinates.'
Chandler, 29, told PA: 'I learned so much about myself and people while being able to play this character, and how she can hold her own.
'And so I was really gifted a lot from Noah's writing in that way, that surprised me, and that I could actually be scared on set from a full grown Xenomorph chasing you. I mean, it really scared me, which was awesome.'
The series is set in the year 2120, when the earth is governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold.
In this corporate era, cyborgs and synthetics, which are humanoid robots with artificial intelligence, exist alongside humans, but the world is changed when the founder of the Prodigy corporation unlocks a technological advance: hybrids (humanoid robots infused with human consciousness).
'Wendy', the first hybrid prototype, marks a new advance in the race for immortality and after Weyland-Yutani's spaceship collides into Prodigy City, Wendy and the other hybrids encounter new and terrifying life forms.
The cast includes Deadwood actor Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh, Black Mirror star Alex Lawther as Hermit, Mary And George's Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, Guerrilla actor Babou Ceesay as Morrow and Bottom star Adrian Edmondson as Atom Eins.
Alien: Earth will launch on Disney+ on August 13.

My village mole said: 'We're awash with stars and now Shawn has started hanging out in Great Tew all the time. 'The word on the street is that he's rented a little place here for some peace and quiet before he goes off on his tour. 'No one ever asks him for a selfie so he must be loving the fact he's left alone. 'But when he walks into cafes and pubs in the area, heads do turn. 'Shawn is treated like a normal person too, he doesn't get any special treatment because he's famous. 'The last time he was in the cafe, he got a telling-off because he was ordering his food right before the kitchen closed. They told him to hurry up and order. 'The poor lad. He's the talk of the village.' Luckily for Shawn, his ears must have stopped burning by last night, when he flew to Budapest for the first show of his tour. He will play three more dates in Denmark, Austria and Germany before performing at London's O2 Arena on August 16. Heartbroken Shawn Mendes stops live concert to pay tribute to Liam Payne after his 'completely devastating' death Once the tour's European leg is over, Shawn heads to the United States, with the run of shows finishing at the Hollywood Bowl on October 17. His last album, Shawn, came out in November last year, when he admitted he had worked through some tough times while writing it. Shawn said: 'This album feels like medicine to me. 'It helped me reconnect with myself, allowing me to work through emotions, find clarity and feel stronger.' Well, the next time he needs a break from the world, we know where he'll be heading.

ITV axe beloved host's big TV return after just one series amid channel's cash crisis and poor viewing figures

Sources close to the host confirmed his disappointment but insisted other major factors were behind the decision SHOW CANNED ITV axe beloved host's big TV return after just one series amid channel's cash crisis and poor viewing figures Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) NOEL EDMONDS' latest TV comeback has hit the skids as ITV has axed his Kiwi Adventure series. I can reveal the former Deal Or No Deal and Noel's House Party host was hoping the initial three-parter, which followed his new life in New Zealand with wife Liz, would become a fixture on the channel. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 5 Noel Edmonds' Kiwi Adventure has been axed by ITV Credit: PA But the broadcaster has no plans to make further episodes as ratings didn't hit the levels required. A TV insider said: 'It's a blow to Noel as he was convinced he was on to a winning idea. 'There was a great buzz around the series and it was well received by both viewers and critics alike. 'But it needed big numbers to spark a follow-up and attracting 1-1.5million per episode just wasn't enough.' Noel Edmonds' Kiwi Adventure, which aired in June, followed the veteran star's bid to turn his River Haven estate, which features a vineyard, pub and wellness centre, into a success and win over locals in the area. The series, which was compared to Prime Video hit Clarkson's Farm, also focused on Noel's quirky side, including his fascination with crystal healing. Sources close to Noel confirmed his disappointment but insisted other major factors were behind the decision — namely, the extreme weather. A source close to Noel told me: 'River Haven has been hit badly by flooding, it's made working on the estate almost impossible. 'That would have meant filming would have been seriously hampered.' They added: 'As far as Noel is concerned, the show has been put on ice.' Noel Edmonds' most bizarre moments - from 'dead parent' orbs and 'electro smog' to Candice the mannequin and bid to buy the BBC The show's axing comes seven years after Noel's last TV comeback attempt, when he starred in I'm A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here! He was the ITV show's big-name signing for 2018 but rather annoyingly, as far as ITV bosses were concerned, he was voted off first. He faced disappointment then and I'm sure he'll bounce back once again. Viewers of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins are in for a treat when their fight is shown on Sunday night's episode. The bruisers slug it out in the Channel 4 series' traditional boxing match challenge and despite Conor being a pro fighter, former Watford star Troy gives as good as he gets and is gutted when he loses. Troy says: 'I'm bigger than him. I shouldn't be beating him, that's his game, right? "But I also wanted to show that, hey, I'm not scared of you and I'm ready for the challenge. "But what it did also show me is I got to a point where I get so angry and I go. I'm ready to go to places that I'm ready to lose it all over a fight, which is pathetic.' Conor added: 'I wanted to definitely let him know that just because you're a big lump, you know, I can still take your head off.' Former Politics Hub host Sophy Ridge and presenter Wilfred Frost will team up on a new breakfast programme in the autumn. Sophy was the lead presenter on the station's last UK election coverage while Wilfred, son of legendary broadcaster Sir David Frost, has been keeping the seat warm since Kay's departure earlier this year. Reports last month claimed under-fire BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty had talks about joining but Sky denied these were significant. A Sky insider said: 'Sophy's interviews are always sharp, calm and clear and Wilf brings a spark with his passion for business and global affairs. 'They have a natural rapport that will shine on screen.' The pair certainly have big shoes to fill. BACK WITH A BANG 5 Ben Mitchell and Stuart Highway are making their return to EastEnders BEN Mitchell and Stuart Highway are pictured for the first time making their return to EastEnders. I revealed last week Ricky Champ, who plays Stuart, is back in Albert Square to comfort brother Callum (Tony Clay) following the passing of their dad, Jonno. They're seen here attending his funeral along with Ben (Max Bowden), Callum's husband, who's on day release from prison. But given Callum has recently fallen for the charms of Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff) while Ben's been locked up, the funeral is likely to play second fiddle to a good old-fashioned East End dust-up. Stuart's life away from Walford with wife Rainie is also exposed, as bosses tease the couple's move from Walford hasn't been plain sailing, which may be a surprise to viewers. After all, there aren't many more depressing places to live than Albert Square. 'We are so bad at talking about death': Kelsey Parker opens up on loss

Podcaster Kelsey Parker speaks to ITV News' Bairbre Holmes about her devasting loss and the need for people to be more open about death Having suffered the loss of her husband three years ago and her third child in June, podcaster Kelsey Parker has decided to speak out, calling for the British to be 'more open and honest' about death. Kelsey, who announced she was expecting her third child in January, shared an Instagram post in June with the sad news that her son Pheonix was 'born sleeping'. His stillbirth came just a week before his due date. The baby was Kelsey's first with her new partner Will Lindsay, whom she met after the death of her husband, The Wanted star Tom Parker, from an inoperable brain tumour. At the time of Pheonix's death, Kelsey, who has a six-year-old daughter Aurelia and four-old-son Bodhi with the late singer, asked for space and time to process this 'devastating and earth-shattering news'. Asked why she had decided to speak out now, the 35-year-old podcaster told ITV News on Thursday: 'Because I think as a nation, we are so bad at talking about death. 'Everyone's so scared of the word. Everyone's scared to die. But there can be beauty in death. And I just want to share my experiences with everyone.' She said people needed to be more open and honest about death and not to shy away from those who are bereaved. 'I think that we just need to be more open about it because we are going to die – that is one thing we're guaranteed in this life, that we are going to die,' she explained. 'And to not be afraid to talk to that person who's gone through loss. 'Because, you know, when Tom died, people used to actually cross the road to not talk to me because they don't know what to say. But I think there is no wrong or right. You just need to speak to that person.' 'It's brought everything to the surface,' she said. 'Losing their dad and now obviously losing their brother. So it's just making sure that they're able to talk and have the space for us to listen.' She said she reminds them that, although they have experienced 'the most extreme loss' they are actually okay. As for her? 'Today I'm okay. Other days I'm not. But I'm just trying to get through each day.' Kelsey showing off her baby bump with partner Will / Credit: Instagram/Kelsey Parker Kelsey said she was drawing support from her family, Will's family, Tom's family and her online followers. 'I think people are so devastated for me, but they know that I am strong and that I'll be okay,' she told ITV News. 'I think people wanted the happy ending for me, and it hasn't worked out that way. 'But, yeah, the love I've received has been absolutely incredible.' Tom and Kelsey before his diagnosis / Credit: Kelsey has previously spoken candidly about how trolls have made her feel guilty for having a new partner. She said in March: 'I'm always going to have guilt but what's so hard is that Tom's not here any more, so what do people want me to do? 'Our house was full of so much sadness but now it's full of happiness, the kids deserve that more than anything.' Following Tom's death, Kelsey raised money for a brain tumour charity by organising annual charity football matches in his memory. Her latest campaign is called Community Calling. 'It's such a lovely campaign, which is getting people to get their old devices that are in their dusty drawers and to get them out, go on to Community Calling and back up your pictures, save everything that you want to save and then send your device off to someone in need,' she explained. 'Because there are so many people out there that haven't got access to a device and it's just so important to help others.' Kelsey holds up a page from her photo book, with a picture of her, partner Will , Aurelia and Bodhi during her pregnancy. / Credit: ITV News The campaign also encourages participants to save their photos in a physical album. The first 500 people to sign up will get a free photo book, like one that Kelsey showed to ITV News. 'My children absolutely loved this when this came through the door because they don't sit there and flick through the phone,' she said. 'I think a physical album is just so lovely. There's so much magic in just flicking through these pictures.' Kelsey hosts a podcast with model Georgia Jones called Mum's the Word! where the pair share parenting advice with celebrity guests. She recorded several episodes before going on maternity leave, which will air in the coming months. 'They were part of my journey so I didn't want to not share them, and they all have incredible guests with really important stories and messages,' she said on Instagram. 'Please take the time to listen to these episodes and remember to be kind when doing so.'
