Man jailed for throwing glass bottle at Celtic goalkeeper during Old Firm match
A man who chucked a bottle at Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo during a derby match with Rangers has been jailed for eight months.
Andrew Watt, 34, launched the missile at the Finnish international at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2025.
Watt initially threw a cigarette at Mr Sinisalo after Celtic scored their equaliser through striker Adam Idah.
He then picked up a half bottle of Buckfast and hurled it at the goalkeeper who celebrated the goal in front of Rangers fans.
The bottle was later handed to police officers by a Rangers substitute.
Watt was identified the following day on CCTV due to his 'distinctive white teeth'.
Watt pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Sinisalo.
Sheriff Mark McGuire told Watt, of Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, that his actions were not of a 'fan' but a 'vicious drunken hooligan.'
The sheriff added: 'Your motive was victim blaming.
'You came to throw a bottle after he celebrated his team scoring an equaliser.
'That is his job – you victim was doing his job – the man was at his work.
'In what possible world could you or anyone else think it is acceptable to throw a bottle at someone at his work?
'Had the bottle hit him, the consequences could have been catastrophic, career ending or worse.
'In a febrile atmosphere in a stadium which holds over 50,000 people, your actions could have sparked a riot.
'It was not just an assault on Mr Sinisalo – what you did could have endangered everyone man, woman and child that afternoon.
'In all the circumstances, to punish you and deter others from acting like you did and to protect the public, I am satisfied there is no alternative to a custodial sentence.'
Watt was also banned from all football matches for a period of six-and-a-half years.
The court heard that after Adam Idah scored, there was a VAR check on the goal to see if it would be allowed.
After a two to three minute stoppage, the referee awarded the equalising goal to Celtic.
Prosecutor Leo McGinn said: 'At that point, Mr Sinisalo turned back to his own goal towards the Rangers fans and pumped his fists.
'This sparked an angry reaction from the Rangers fans behind the goal and a half bottle of Buckfast was thrown in his direction.
'The bottle did not strike him but landed on the field of play.'
The bottle was handed over to police officers by a Rangers substitute but the perpetrator was unknown at the time.
A CCTV investigation was carried out by police the next day which identified Watt as being responsible.
Mr McGinn added: 'He was seen to throw a lit cigarette in Mr Sinisalo's direction which had not been spotted by officers.
'Watt could be identified by his build and distinctive white teeth.'
Watt later handed himself into police officers after he was aware that they were looking for him.
Kevin Corr, defending, told the sentencing that Mr Sinisalo was 'not gloating' before the assault took place.
The lawyer added: 'The stadium was tense at the time while the decision was being awarded.
'My client had been consuming alcohol on the morning off the game and continued drinking during the match.
'It was not a full half bottle of Buckfast as it was in the second half of the match.
'He knows that this is the behaviour of someone in their teens rather than someone in his mid-thirties – there is no attempt to minimise or justify what happened.'
The hearing was told that Watt has 21 previous convictions, which include two football-related matters from 2013 and 2015 – the latter of which saw him jailed for ten months and handed a three-year football ban.

Russell Martin decides Rangers next three signings after Max Aarons loan transfer agreed
The signing of Aarons is set to bring the summer window to life for the Glasgow giants Rangers are set to confirm the arrival of Max Aarons as the first signing for the Russell Martin era at Ibrox. But a busy summer is far from over for the boss as he plans to strengthen the squad before the crucial Champions League qualifiers against Panathinaikos next month. Lyall Cameron has joined the Rangers squad having agreed a pre-contract move from Dundee when Philippe Clement was in the hot seat, while 25-year-old Aarons is expected to be unveiled on a temporary switch from Bournemouth in the coming day. And along with the new US owners at Rangers, Martin will have his eyes on silverware next season after watching Celtic and Aberdeen claim the domestic accolades last season. With the future of last season's top scorer Cyriel Dessers up in the air amid interest from AEK, a new striker appears to be at the top of the shopping list. Despite Turgeman stating he is "ready" for a move, it could be on to plan B for Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell. Westerlo frontman Matija Frigan is said to be on the shortlist of targets with Spotske Novoski reporting that the Belgian side have told suitors they must stump up a £6.4million fee to land the 22-year-old Croatian. Interest in Jamie Vardy has also been floated after his Leicester City departure - but Rangers are far from alone in chasing the veteran's signature with a whopping 10 clubs said to be in the picture. Martin will also want to see additions on the wing following the departure of Vaclav Cerny. The Czech international's agent insists there's no chance of the player making a return to Rangers after a successful loan spell from Wolfsburg last season. A £9million price tag has been placed on the wide man and agent David Nehoda said: "Vaclav will now be back at Wolfsburg in time for the start of their training. We are currently not in talks with Rangers about a possible further collaboration." Kwame Poku also looks to be inching closer to a move to Ibrox as the 23-year-old approaches the end of his Peterborough contract. Posh director of football Barry Fry has revealed he previously commanded a £5million and £5million in add-ons for the forward who is set to leave for a minimal fee. Should Poku move outside of England, a compensation fee under the lower rate FIFA guidelines would be due to the club due to cross-border rules with The Sun reporting a modest fee of £350k will be paid out the English League One side if an Ibrox switch is rubber stamped. An arrival at centre-back could help cover departures with Leon Balogun already leaving the club and Robin Propper expected to follow for FC Twente. Conor Coady is "a personal target for Martin and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell" - who worked with the 32-year-old at Wolves and Everton - according to the Rangers Review with the defender said to be "keen" amid interest from Wolves. Croatian centre-back Luka Jelenic is reportedly a target for Rangers just 12 months after a move to Osijek - and defender Almamy Toure has been floated after leaving FC Kaiserslautern but reports suggest he is keen on exploring his options in Germany before deciding his future. Speaking after the SPFL fixtures were announced, boss Martin confirmed he expected more new faces to link up with the current squad before the trip to Athens. He said: 'We'll have a few before the European game, that's for sure. Everyone is working extremely hard. "The bulk of the work has been about identifying character and talent we want in the building who can add to this group and add to us culturally and performance as well and I'm excited about the people we are starting to look at and hopefully will add.'

'First Old Firm could be defining moment in Martin's reign'
We asked for your views on Rangers' Scottish Premiership fixtures and how they will be faring after 10 what some of you said:Brian: This is the great unknown going into first 10 games under a new manager that most of us are unsure about - I am anxious and not overly confident. It could be exhilarating and the start of a new era of success or it could become toxic ending in a total meltdown. Loyalty to the club says sitting on top on maximum points with a goal difference that speaks volumes of a team totally dominating Scottish If the recruitment is right and Russell Martin instils a sense of belief and resolve into his team, then I fervently hope Rangers are on top after 10 games and creating headlines with scintillating football - the first Old Firm could be the acid test and a defining moment in Martin's stint as The manager's tactics and mentality will take up to the first 10 games for the team to be fully embracing the high press he wants, so for me if we are in second place but easily within touching distance of the league leaders I'll be happy. It's a long season with many twists and turns I think there is so much apprehension regarding the new management team and the squad, however I'm really excited about the league (not so much about the Euro tie), but following the opening 10 I anticipate a 100% return and being five points clear of Hibs in second...
