Baby and toddler burnt beyond recognition: Free State parents arrested
A couple from the Petsana informal settlement in Reitz in the Free State has been arrested following a tragic shack fire that claimed the lives of their two young children.
Bloemfontein Courant reports that the victims, a seven-month-old girl and an 18-month-old boy, were burnt beyond recognition after being left alone in their home while their parents, aged 23 and 25, allegedly went out drinking on Saturday night.
According to police, the fire broke out at approximately 22:45.
While at a local tavern, the couple was alerted by a community member that their shack was ablaze. They rushed home, only to find emergency services and distraught residents already on the scene. It was allegedly only then that they realised their children had been left behind.
Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring confirmed the arrests. 'The parents allegedly left the children unattended in the shack while they went out drinking. This gross negligence led to a devastating outcome. The children were found burnt beyond recognition.'
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Police have opened an inquest and a case of child neglect.
The couple is expected to appear in the Reitz Magistrate's Court today.

KZN murder accused found dead in police van after court appearance
Eduan Terblanche (53), who is accused of murdering his partner Stacey van Heerden (49) at a Mooi River hotel on May 28, was found dead inside a police van yesterday. According to The Witness, Terblanche was being transported from the Mooi River Magistrate's Court to holding cells in Pietermaritzburg yesterday, shortly after his bail application was postponed. He was meant to return to court tomorrow for the continuation of his bail application. However, his family confirmed they were last night informed of his death. Police in Mooi River have now opened an inquest docket to investigate the cause and circumstances surrounding his death. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident without naming Terblanche. Netshiunda said police were investigating an incident 'where an inmate, who was being transported from court to the police station, was found dead inside a police van on arrival at the station on Monday'. Terblanche appeared in court yesterday using a crutch and wrapped in a blanket. He was facing charges of murder and defeating or obstructing the course of justice after his partner, Van Heerden, was found dead at the Gleneagles Hotel. According to the charge sheet, Van Heerden was killed, allegedly by Terblanche who then reportedly set fire to the hotel room while she was still inside. Alleged eMalahleni serial rapist back in court amid public outcry
Cascar Nkosi (39), the alleged serial rapist at the centre of one of eMalahleni's most disturbing criminal cases, is set to appear in the regional court today. According to Witbank News, Nkosi faces 26 serious charges involving the kidnapping and rape of girls between the ages of 7 and 13, along with separate charges of raping and assaulting his wife. His appearance comes after a dramatic turnaround on May 2, when he told the eMalahleni Magistrate's Court — through his attorney — that he would no longer abandon his bail application. This followed the Directorate for Public Prosecution's (DPP) decision to move the trial to the regional court, not the high court, as many had expected. The DPP's decision has caused public outrage, with activists and families of the victims demanding that the case be moved to the high court and that Nkosi be denied bail. Community members, civil society groups, and political parties are already gathered outside the court, showing support for the victims and calling for justice to be served. Man jumps to his death from rooftop of popular Cape Town hotel
Capetonians were left reeling on Monday afternoon following a tragic incident at Hotel Sky, where a man died after jumping from the rooftop. Western Cape police have launched a full investigation, with crime scene experts and Cape Town Central SAPS detectives currently gathering evidence. A post-mortem will determine the man's identity and age. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Hotel Sky's Managing Director, Paul Kelley, confirmed the man was a walk-in visitor and that the incident was not connected to the hotel's Sky Hi Ride attraction. The man reportedly walked in off the street and went up to the 28th floor, which is the rooftop, and then jumped to his death despite the security and safety measures in place. Kelley extended his condolences to the man's loved ones, emphasising the need to take mental health struggles seriously. 'We must all recognise mental health illness and depression and never take these incidents for granted as a community.' Kelley reaffirmed the hotel's commitment to safety, adding that the premises comply fully with local and international standards. Help is available.
