PM hails reforms and public-private cooperation for surge in global competitiveness ranking

PUTRAJAYA (June 17): Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has today lauded Malaysia for jumping 11 places to rank 23rd in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025, marking its best performance in five years.
The Prime Minister said the surge reflected the effectiveness of his administration's reform initiatives and the collective efforts of both the public and private sectors.
'We have proven that Malaysia is capable of making great strides forward through strong political will, the commitment of the entire government machinery, and close cooperation with the private sector,' he said in a statement here.
He said Malaysia's improvements in trade, administrative efficiency and the investment environment had laid the groundwork for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
'This achievement belongs to all Malaysians,' Anwar added.
He described the latest ranking as a significant step towards the country's goal of becoming one of the world's most competitive economies by 2033.
The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) said earlier the latest ranking, up from 34th last year, reaffirmed the nation's trajectory towards becoming one of the world's top 12 most competitive economies by 2033 as targeted under the Madani Economy framework.
Malaysia ranked fourth globally in economic performance, improving four spots from eighth place last year. Both government efficiency and business efficiency factors improved by eight positions.
Miti said the international trade sub-factor increased 11 places to sixth, as strong export growth in goods and services, diversified markets, and rising tourism receipts strengthened Malaysia's trade surplus.
The ministry also expressed confidence that with strong governance, continuous commitment from the federal and state governments and close cooperation with the private sector, Malaysia is on the right path to position itself among the world's 12 most competitive economies by 2033.
According to the IMD World Competitiveness Centre, the annual ranking assesses countries based on four factors: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency, and infrastructure.

Govt amending National Skills Development Act to empower TVET
PUTRAJAYA: The government has agreed to amend the National Skills Development Act 2006 to strengthen technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in the country. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim (pic) said through the amendment, the ministry aims to elevate the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) to a level equivalent to a degree or even a doctorate (PhD). He said the introduction of new and higher levels in the SKM was necessary, as the certificate currently only comprises levels one to five, which are equivalent to an advanced diploma. "I will table the amendment in Parliament and I urge all MPs to support it. I want (to increase the levels to) six, seven and eight so that TVET education can be considered on par with a PhD," he said when launching the P10X Academy Sdn Bhd here on Tuesday (June 17). He added that the public must change its perception of TVET institutions, as they offer vast opportunities for youth to acquire knowledge and new skills. "We want to draw parents' attention to TVET… we also want to cultivate the mindset that not everyone needs to go to university, as we also have TVET institutions for further studies," he said. Meanwhile, Sim said the integrated UP_TVET system has received 140,000 applications for admission to TVET institutions so far. Mindef Aims To Digitalise All 38 Schools In Camps Nationwide
KLUANG, June 17 (Bernama) – The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) aims to digitalise all 38 schools in camps nationwide as part of efforts to cultivate the use of creative technology among children of defence personnel. Deputy Minister Adly Zahari said the initiative is aligned with the Ministry of Education's Digital Education Policy launched in 2023, which seeks to produce digitally fluent students capable of navigating the demands of today's technological landscape. 'This initiative will also empower educators and education leaders to integrate digital technology into the education ecosystem, strengthen digital infrastructure and content, as well as optimise strategic partnerships to advance digital education,' he said after launching the Affin Digital Space at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sultan Sir Ibrahim here today. SK Sultan Sir Ibrahim is among the three schools that were selected for this year's pilot project, through a collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Affin Bank Berhad, with an allocation of RM94,000. The first two schools to implement the initiative were SK Kementah and SK TUDM Subang. 'All 38 schools in camps, including those in Sabah and Sarawak, will be digitalised in phases, subject to feedback and the effectiveness of the pilot project,' said Adly. He stressed that digitalisation is not only aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of teaching and learning but also supports the national well-being ecosystem through the MADANI nation-building agenda and the National Fourth Industrial Revolution policy. At SK Sultan Sir Ibrahim, a green screen technology studio has been set up to enable students and teachers to produce creative, media-based educational content. 'During the launch, the school media crew also demonstrated the use of green screen facilities, video editing techniques and lighting setups.
