Five Luxe JBR review: Where Dubai's party brand meets refined beachfront luxury

Five Hotels is synonymous with Dubai's party scene, but Five Luxe JBR – the latest offering from homegrown brand Five Holdings – aims to strike a middle ground, offering a more balanced atmosphere than its JVC and Palm properties. Opened in April last year, the beachfront property is meant to be the most premium offering of the three, hosting an impressive line-up of bars and restaurants, including the Ibiza-famous Pacha brand, acquired by Five in 2023. Located in a quieter part of the vibrant Jumeirah Beach Residence area, the hotel offers sweeping views of Ain Dubai, Bluewaters Island, the Arabian Gulf and Palm Jumeirah. Plus, it can be easily accessed by taxis and the tram in the neighbouring Dubai Marina. It houses 222 rooms and 222 residences and, I'm told, is already frequented by celebrities, from sports stars to movie producers and DJs. The National checked in to find out what you can expect from this glamorous resort. The welcome As we drive in, there are supercars parked in front, a signature of the Five brand, before luggage porters whisk away my bags. Once inside the lobby, the first thing I notice is the triple height glass window that faces out to the swimming pool on the other side. A massive glass chandelier resembling a school of fish and bubbles hangs above the lounge. The staff are friendly and welcoming, helping me seamlessly change my restaurant reservations for my two-night stay. The room We stay at the city-facing Luxe Spa Suite. At 235 square metres, it is generously sized – one of the largest I've ever stayed in – and comes with a lavish bathroom, an in-room steam and sauna, jacuzzi, a shower, his and her faucets, a walk-in closet and an outdoor terrace. All the drapes and lights are electronically controlled. But the highlight of staying in the Luxe Spa Suite is having our own personal VIP butler, Khalid, who offers to unpack our luggage. He even escorts us to all our dinner, spa and beach club reservations during our stay. The food The ninth floor of the hotel houses most of the culinary action, and the variety of food and drink offerings make it stand apart from other Five hotels. We have dinner at Ronin, the Michelin Guide-recognised Japanese restaurant, where the chef welcomes guests by theatrically firing the teppanyaki. Although the air conditioning was not optimal, highlights of the night include the melt me Wagyu sandwich with caviar and 24k gold leaf (Dh160), kimchi bob chicken fried rice with sunny side up (Dh95), Wagyu tenderloin toban yaki (Dh280), BBQ yuzu miso black cod (Dh220) and Japanese doughnuts with salted miso caramel (Dh55) for dessert. After dinner, we head to Paradiso, a Barcelona export and former winner of the world's best bar, which opened its first international outpost at Five Luxe JBR. The Dubai outpost has a circus feel thanks to balloons and merry-go-round horses hanging from the ceiling and a carousel bar outside on the terrace overlooking Ain Dubai. Expect to be served some theatrical drinks, a tapas-style menu and groovy music. Five Luxe JBR food - in pictures My favourite dining spot, however, was Tete-a-Tete, a Monte-Carlo-inspired, fine-dining restaurant with a lavender-filled ceiling and glass jewellery boxes for private dining rooms. A perfect date night spot with ocean views, this venue also hosts the Bisou Bisou brunch on Saturdays. For our meal there, chef Daniel Welna recommends several dishes, but my favourites include the grilled prawns (Dh105) and seared foie gras toast (Dh110) for starters, roasted duck (Dh200) and beef short ribs (Dh220) for the mains, and creme caramel (Dh45) and chocolate fondant (Dh45) for dessert. I didn't have the opportunity to dine at sports bar Goose Island Tap House. On Sundays, this venue also hosts a roast brunch. Breakfast scene Breakfast is served beachside at Cielo and offers plenty of choice. There's something for everyone, including an Arabic spread as well as Indian fare. There's also a live station for pancakes, waffles and French toast, cereals and milk, plus a bread station. There is also an impressive pastry selection and an a la carte menu for eggs. The hummus on toast was a personal favourite.A selection of detox shots is also on offer. Avoid going too late in the morning as it gets very busy and it's hard to get a table indoors. Spa and wellness My husband and I try the 60-minute rebalancing massage at the ReFive Spa. Our masseurs Phat and Loppy work magic with their hands and put us to sleep during the treatment (Dh675), which is for deep relaxation. We are offered a detox water before and a fruit tea after the massage. Guests can unwind further in the sauna and indoor pool, while those hoping to keep their fitness on track can work out in a 24/7 indoor or outdoor gym with skyline and sea views. Hotel facilities Playa Pacha, a pool and private beach club, offers Ibiza party vibes. It was a tad too hot for us to indulge in a pool party, but we spot several guests at the spot, where the service is quick. The beach club offers three pools – one at the top reserved for in-house guests and families, one in the middle and one at the bottom right in front of the DJ booth. There are light bites available – think pizzas and Wagyu beef sliders. Despite the party vibes, the property bills itself as family-friendly and is home to a club and pool for children near Cielo restaurant. However, I didn't see too many family guests at the property, instead there were more couples and groups of singles. The hotel also houses a flower shop, a rent-a-car kiosk and a boutique, while the concierge desk arranges tours to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as well as a range of water sport activities. Accessibility and sustainability Five Luxe JBR offers wheelchair-friendly rooms. The hotel is taking steps towards sustainability by reducing plastic use and installing solar panels to complement water-saving and recycling systems. Our spa suite houses a recycling bin and refillable glass water bottles. No fresh flowers are used at the property. Value for money Room prices start from Dh1,800 ($490), while a Luxe Spa Suite is priced Dh1,950 per night, inclusive of taxes. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is at noon. As part of a summer promotion, guests can avail of either an early check-in from 10am or late check-out until 4pm and a 20 per cent discount on treatments at ReFive Spa for bookings through the hotel website, valid until September 30.

Where to get the best mocktails in Abu Dhabi

For cocktail lovers, Abu Dhabi's bar scene has options for days, but what about those of us who want all the flavour, hold the alcohol? Whether you're driving, detoxing, or just not into the booze scene, there's no reason your drink should feel 'basic'. Thankfully, more and more spots across the capital are taking their mocktails seriously; crisp, creative, and just as good as the real thing (if not better). From garden-inspired mixes to spice-laced refreshers, here's where to get the best Mocktails in Abu Dhabi when you want a proper drink minus the alcohol. La Petite Maison (LPM) This elegant French-Mediterranean spot at The Galleria ticks all the right boxes: refined interiors and water views from a dreamy terrace. But beyond the classics, LPM has quietly built one of the city's most impressive mocktail menus. It's 16 drinks deep, featuring everything from black lemonade to zero-proof espresso martinis. The Limonade Noire is a standout; rosemary-infused honey, verjuice, activated charcoal, and soda water. It's unexpected in the best way. On the lighter side, Pomme-Basilic mixes green apple cordial, fresh basil, and sparkling water. Location: La Petite Maison, The Galleria, Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi Times: Daily, 12pm to 1am, 12.30pm on weekends Contact: (02) 692 9600, @lpmabudhabi Oii Set within the dry but lively Al Qana precinct, Oii is a Mediterranean-inspired spot that puts just as much effort into its mocktails as it does its food. With a tagline like 'serving joy,' it makes sense that the drinks list leads with flavour. The mocktail menu is stacked with twelve originals, all equally photogenic and refreshing. Bird's Kiss is a grapefruit, elderflower, and butterfly pea tea blend. Skopelos Vibes channels island energy with passionfruit, pineapple, and ginger ale, while Porto goes peach and strawberry for something smooth and low-key. Location: Oii, Al Qana, Al Maqta' St, Rabdan, Abu Dhabi Times: Daily, 8am to 12am Contact: (02) 628 2983, @oiiabudhabi Mika Tucked into the waterfront at Yas Marina, Mika is a refined Mediterranean restaurant that brings subtle Middle Eastern influence into its kitchen and its drinks menu. With interiors that lean modern but relaxed and a stunning view, It's the kind of place that works just as well for a long lunch as it does for a laid-back dinner. Mocktails here anything but basic. Mika's 'art in a glass' philosophy means each non-alcoholic drink is carefully crafted from layered ingredients. Expect seasonal options, delicate garnishes, and flavour profiles that match the mood of the food. Location: Mika, Building 2A, Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi Times: Daily, 12pm to 12am Contact: (05) 6 433 1422, @ Dragon's Tooth Hidden beneath Rosewood Abu Dhabi, Dragon's Tooth is the sultry little speakeasy tucked behind Dai Pai Dong. Inspired by 1920s Shanghai jazz lounges, it's got low lighting, deep booths, and an Asian bar menu to match the mood. When it comes to their signature mocktails; The Passion Boba is the standout: oolong tea, passionfruit, lime, and a handful of chewy boba pearls. It's sweet, layered, and playful. There are more signature refreshers on the menu too, perfect for those skipping the spirits but not the fun. Location: Dragon's Tooth, Rosewood Abu Dhabi, The Galleria Al Maryah Island Times: Daily, 6pm to 1am (until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays) Contact: (02) 813 5588, @rosewoodabudhabi Isla Beach Bar Image: Rixos Marina Abu Dhabi website Sitting right on the sand with views out over the marina, Isla is one of the capital's most stunning beachside spots. It's got that laid-back-luxe energy, think sun-washed seating, mellow beats, and a menu that leans into Cuban. Great for a post-swim refresh or winding down with something cold in hand. The mocktail list is refreshing, with tropical flavours, citrusy mixers, and the kind of ice-cold energy you want when it's 40°C and rising. Ask the team for their seasonal picks or go classic with a Havana-inspired no-alcohol twist. Location: Isla Beach Bar, Rixos, Marina Mall Ring Road, Al Kasir, Abu Dhabi Times: Daily, 9am to 11pm Contact: (02) 498 0000, @rixosmarinaabudhabi Taparelle Tucked inside Manarat Al Saadiyat, Taparelle has quickly earned regular status for anyone in the know. It's got the kind of atmosphere that works for everything, date night, family lunch, or group catch-up. The vibe? Warm, lively, and full of woodfired pizza scent drifting through the open-air terrace. The drinks menu is solid across the board, mocktails included. The standout is the Aubin, passionfruit, whipped top, a hit of lime, smooth, fresh, and just a little bit extra. There's a small but confident list worth sipping your way through. Location: Taparelle, Manarat Al Saadiyat, Al Saadiyat Island, Cultural District, Abu Dhabi Times: Open daily from 8am to 11pm (until midnight on weekends) Contact: (02) 657 5832, @taparellerestaurant

Slippers from Paris, ring from Ibiza: The perfect souvenir from your summer vacation

Souvenir shopping has never been more stylish‭ ‬—‭ ‬from resortcore hotel merch‭, ‬to global brands leaning into the world's hippest destinations‭ ‬—‭ ‬luxury resortwear is having‭ ‬a moment‭.‬ In the period between Talitha Getty in 1960s Marrakech elevating kaftans to couture status‭, ‬and Spanish super-luxe label Loewe's game-changing tie-up with legendary 1970s Ibiza boutique Paula's in 2017‭, ‬resortwear suffered a tendency to naff‭. ‬Think hasty purchases from airport chain stores‭, ‬or market stall souvenirs that only ever make sense in holiday mode‭. ‬I confess to stockpiling tie-dye pieces in Phuket that have never seen the light of day‭ ‬in Dubai‭.‬ Then‭, ‬eight years ago‭, ‬Loewe teamed up with Paula's to inject the Balearic Island's bohemian energy into its polished luxury‭, ‬introducing the previously uptown chic brand to a whole new audience of aesthetic nomads‭. ‬Nearly a decade on‭, ‬each drop of Loewe Paula's Ibiza sets the style tone for the coming summer‭, ‬proving that raffia‭, ‬pareos‭, ‬and knick-knack frippery can look expensive‭. ‬Which is helpful‭, ‬because these pieces are certainly pricier than anything you'll find at Ibiza's Las Dalias Hippy Market‭.‬ Narrowing fashion's pin drop down even further‭, ‬legacy hotels are increasingly pairing up with fashion‭, ‬lifestyle‭, ‬and beauty brands to create merch that's covetable‭, ‬not cringe‭. ‬Hotel marques‭, ‬some hundreds of years old‭, ‬can read stuffy and staid‭, ‬but marry them with a young‭, ‬hip‭,‬‭ ‬aspirational but accessible independent fashion brand‭, ‬and they're reinvigorated from grand dame to girl-about‭ -‬town‭. ‬For fashion brands‭, ‬the union offers a step up to the kind of experience its customers might desire‭, ‬but not necessarily be able to afford‭ ‬—‭ ‬yet‭. ‬A Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc x Sporty‭ & ‬Rich tank‭, ‬from the third chapter of the collab‭, ‬costs Dh479‭. ‬A night at the Antibes hotel starts from Dh11,500‭ (‬and you'll need to book five of them‭). ‬ Beyond official collabs‭, ‬there are a wealth of destination-inspired buys this season to tell the story of your trip‭, ‬long after‭ ‬you've returned home‭. ‬The best‭, ‬stylish enough to display on a shelf in place of that market stall trinket‭. ‬Here's my pick of city-inspired style souvenirs that semaphore you're tastefully well-travelled‭. ‬ Paris Step out of bed‭, ‬slip these on‭, ‬and for a blissful moment imagine Paris's fairytale Place Vendôme awaits outside your window‭. ‬From the latest collection birthed by American casualwear brand Frame's collaboration with the iconic Paris Ritz‭, ‬the limited-edition pair of‭ ‬'Late Checkout'‭ ‬slippers promise five-star luxury both on and off‭ ‬vacances‭. ‬For bragging rights outside of the bedroom‭, ‬there's also swimwear‭, ‬cashmere and leather‭ ‬—‭ ‬definitely a level up from a canvas tote and branded baseball cap‭. ‬Between us‭, ‬you don't even need to fly to France to score a piece‭, ‬with much of the collab available via Ounass for delivery to your door‭. ‬Quite literally putting on the Ritz‭.‬ Ibiza The collision between the party island of Ibiza and the 134-year-old Beirut fine jewellery brand L'Atelier Nawbar is a dazzling match made in heaven‭. ‬Drawing on sun insignia and a vibrant rainbow of sunset shades‭, ‬pieces include pinky rings‭, ‬chokers and bracelets featuring hand-painted enamel and precious stones‭. ‬Think of them as a wear-anywhere reminder to keep the party alive‭.‬ Tokyo Strictly speaking‭, ‬the pink blossoms on Loewe's sunglasses are daisies‭, ‬but they more than pass as a stylistic homage to Japan's sakura season‭, ‬when the cherry trees blossom‭, ‬blanketing parks in a wash of pink petals‭. ‬So‭, ‬whether you are planning a trip to witness a spring‭ ‬'hanami'‭ ‬cherry blossom festival or simply value a reminder of seeking beauty in the present moment‭, ‬these sunglasses will keep your dopamine levels in full bloom‭. ‬ Japiur The teardop patterns of paisley have long been associated with Yves Saint Laurent's fascination with India‭, ‬now playing a central role in the spring/summer 2025‭ ‬collection under the creative vision of Anthony Vaccarello as light-as-air blouses‭, ‬maxi skirts and dresses‭. ‬The casually cool‭ ‬'Amalia'‭ ‬bag in silk twill navy paisley incorporates an artisanal jewellery chain featuring the‭ ‬'Cassandre'‭ ‬YSL motif‭, ‬ideal for a winter wander around the Pink City‭. ‬While the cultural history of paisley‭, ‬from ancient Persia to 11th century Kashmir‭, ‬is as swirling as the design itself‭, ‬the motif still effortlessly recalls the urge to travel and is as chic at home or abroad‭.‬ Bali Escaping to Bali for the final days of summer‭? ‬Pack Dior's Toile de Jouy Palms fan‭, ‬covered in lush jungle motifs‭, ‬to waft the warm Indonesian breeze in style‭. ‬Returning to the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay‭, ‬a Dioriviera pop-up is open until the end of August‭, ‬with towering rattan sculptures of elephants‭, ‬giraffes‭, ‬tigers and palm trees for an Insta-goals fusion of fashion and nature‭. ‬There are even Dior pool floats in the infinity pool‭. ‬ Antibes Cherries from the magical south of France town Antibes are typically harvested in May and June‭, ‬but a piece from Valentino's‭ ‬'Cherryfic'‭ ‬collection will sweeten your day all year round‭. ‬Adorning jacquard raffia bags‭ (‬the best with bohemian fringing‭), ‬charm bracelets‭, ‬swimwear and a bucket hat‭, ‬Valentino's cherry print recalls an enchanting summer idled away on the French Riviera‭. ‬Cherries have also popped up at Louis Vuitton x Murakami this summer‭, ‬proving that one bite and we're smitten‭. ‬ Greek Islands No need to artificial intelligence-out the crowds from the vista adorning book clutch brand Olympia Le-Tan's heavenly keepsakes‭. ‬Featuring illustrator Madalina Andronic's picture-perfect imagining of a dreamy tablescape overlooking the Aegean Sea‭, ‬the embroidered silk thread and felt appliqué clutch will prove a far more lasting addition to wardrobes than island-market souvenirs that never quite translate to home soil‭. ‬Sold as a numbered limited edition‭, ‬the handcrafted clutch is the antithesis of an iPhone snap‭, ‬engineered with heirloom artistry‭ ‬and imbued with evocative memories of sun-drenched afternoons framed by bougainvillea sweeping over blue doors punctuating whitewashed walls‭. ‬In the words of‭ ‬Mamma Mia‭!‬‭, ‬how can I resist you‭?‬
