Scotland call up player from second tier in France

Yahoo27-01-2025
Australia-born number eight Alex Masibaka, who plays for Angouleme in the second tier of French rugby, has received a shock call-up to Scotland's Six Nations squad.
The unheralded forward replaces Josh Bayliss, who is expected to miss the tournament after being added to the growing list of unavailable players when he was injured playing for Bath on Sunday.
The 23-year-old - with a mother from Paisley and a father from Fiji - was born in Perth and played briefly for Western Force before being signed by French club Montpellier in 2022.
The Top 14 side loaned him the following campaign to Pro D2 side Angouleme, where he has remained this season.
Masibaka, who is 6ft 1in and 18st, has scored 12 tries in 30 games for the club in south-west France, where he plays with former England winger Jonny May.
Scotland's management have been tracking him since 2021 and want a closer look at his power and ball-carrying game.
Their interest in Masibaka grew with the injury to Bayliss, who was so impressive in the autumn Tests.
Head coach Gregor Townsend has Jack Dempsey and Jack Mann as his number eights in the squad but was limited in his other options when looking for a replacement for Bayliss.

Magnus Bradbury is serving a suspension and the impressive Ben Muncaster is injured, while the other eligible players in that position are raw youngsters.
Bayliss' withdrawal means Townsend has now lost for the entire tournament four of the original squad he named on 15 January - Sione Tuipulotu, Dylan Richardson, Scott Cummings and now Bayliss.
Before he named that squad he was already without Kyle Steyn, Adam Hastings, Max Williamson, Andy Onyeama-Christie and Muncaster.
The majority of those nine players would either be certainties for the starting XV or likely to be in the matchday squad.
There is also a concern over Jonny Gray, who has only played three games since the end of October and none since the middle of December.
The lock was expected to make his comeback on Saturday against Lyon but Bordeaux deemed him unfit to play.
He may recover in time to face Italy on Saturday, but there has to be a concern about his sharpness for the intensity of the Six Nations after being out for so long.
Townsend is likely to draft in cover at second row in what is an increasingly challenging preamble to his eighth Six Nations as coach.

Former Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin makes his next move, this time to Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Allan Saint-Maximin's wide-ranging career is taking him to Mexico. The former Newcastle winger signed a contract with Club America, the top-tier Mexican team said Tuesday. The 28-year-old Saint-Maximin arrives in the Liga MX after a one-year stint with Turkey's Fenerbahce where he played on loan from Saudi Arabia's Al Ahli. America, the winningest club in Mexico with 16 league titles, did not disclose further details about the contract. Local media reported a two-year deal worth around $10 million. Saint-Maximin is the second French player to play for Club America. Jeremy Menez, who won the Apertura 2018 championship with the club, was the first. The most successful French player in Mexican league history is Andre-Pierre Gignac, who has won five league titles with the UANL Tigres and scored 209 goals in all competitions since arriving in Mexico in 2015. Saint-Maximin, a former France youth international, debuted with Saint-Etienne in his home country, moved to Monaco and Nice, and in 2019 to Newcastle in the Premier League, where he spent four seasons.

Another Ul-Haq ton helps Yorkshire to cup Roses win

Metro Bank One-Day Cup, Group B, Clifton Park, York Yorkshire 295-3 (46.5 overs): Ul-Haq 117, Luxton 77; Shetty 1-35 Lancashire 294-7 (50.0 overs): Jones 102, Balderson 70; White 2-66 Yorkshire beat Lancashire by seven wickets Scorecard; Tables Group B leaders Yorkshire maintained their 100% start to this season's One-Day Cup as they confidently chased 295 to beat Lancashire by seven wickets thanks to a second successive century for in-form overseas opener Imam-ul-Haq. The White Rose won their third successive game, beating the previously unbeaten Red Rose, who had won one and had the other washed out. Lancashire posted 294-7 thanks largely to an entertaining opening 102 off 88 balls from Michael Jones in front of a sell-out 4,500 crowd at Clifton Park in York. But Ul-Haq was the cornerstone of Yorkshire's reply with 117 off 124 balls and he shared a defining 153 for the second wicket with Will Luxton, who hit 77 off 63, as the hosts won with 19 balls to spare. Pakistani left-hander Ul-Haq, who hit 10 fours and five sixes during Tuesday's innings, is now the leading run-scorer in this season's One-Day Cup with 331. He scored a career-best 159 in victory at Northamptonshire last Friday. T20 Blast to be revamped in 2026 Yorkshire batter Luxton signs new deal until 2027 Vacant chair role at Lancashire 'appeals' to Lloyd Earlier, Ormskirk-born ex-Red Rose Jones posted his first century since rejoining Lancashire from Durham over the winter. He reached a 33-ball 50 and helped them to 100-1 in the 18th over. Either side of losing George Bell lbw playing to leg against two-wicket seamer Jack White, Jones hoisted three sixes over long-on and long-off and hit one arrow straight off Ben Coad's seam. He later pulled successive sixes off Matthew Revis towards the latter stages of a 92-run stand with his captain Marcus Harris, who was the first of two wickets to fall in as many overs as the score fell to 136-3 in the 24th. Harris was caught behind driving at Revis for 32 before Coad trapped Josh Bohannon lbw without scoring. Jones reached his century off 79 balls and hit seven sixes in all. But the visitors were checked impressively through the middle of their innings. They were limited to 40 runs from the end of the 25th over - 143-3 - to the end of the 35th, where they reached 183-4 having lost Jones slicing White out to deep cover. Replays suggest George Balderson was reprieved on 18 as he pulled Dan Moriarty for four. Him stepping on off-stump in the process went unnoticed by the umpires. Balderson made a dynamic 70 off 48 balls as Lancashire fell just short of 300 in excellent batting conditions. Tom Bailey had Adam Lyth caught behind driving early in Yorkshire's chase, which fell to 16-1. But Luxton kicked things into life by taking three fours and six - all through leg - off Will Williams' first four balls, in the 11th over, as the score moved to 57-1. From there, Luxton and Imam cruised along against a Lancashire attack lacking depth, understandable with half a dozen bowlers on Hundred duty. By the time Luxton reached his 50 off 42 balls, Yorkshire were 107-1 after 20 overs. Imam's third in as many matches - this off 72 balls - followed shortly afterwards. When Luxton miscued Charlie Barnard's left-arm spin to long-on, Yorkshire were still a long way ahead at 169-2 in the 30th over. Imam reached his latest hundred off 118 balls by pulling Bailey for his third six before falling caught at midwicket on the pull against Arav Shetty's spin - 220-3 in the 37th. James Wharton and Revis wrapped things up with 41 apiece in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 75. Duplantis sets new pole vault world record of 6.29m

Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis bettered his pole vault world record by a centimetre on Tuesday, clearing 6.29 metres at the athletics meet in Budapest. Sweden's Duplantis broke the world record for the 13th time as he soared over the bar at the second attempt to improve on his 6.28m from Stockholm in June. It was the 25-year-old's third record of 2025 having also cleared 6.27m in Clermont-Ferrand in February. Duplantis notched up his 33rd competition victory, clearing 6.11m on his first attempt to finish ahead of Greece's Emmanouil Karalis (6.02m) and Australia's Kurtis Marschall (5.83m). On his second attempt at 6.29m, Duplantis touched the bar with one leg and his stomach, but it held, and the jump was validated. Since Ukrainian Sergey Bubka became the first athlete to clear 6 metres on July 13, 1985 in Paris, the world record has been broken 26 times, including 12 times by Bubka, 13 times by Duplantis and once by Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie. The US-born Duplantis first broke the world record in 2020 with 6.17m. Duplantis is favourite for a third consecutive outdoor world title in a month's time in Tokyo. tb/ea/nf
