Indian Institute of Science researchers uncover traffic jams inside cells linked to diabetes

Time of India3 hours ago
Bengaluru: Just as traffic jams choke city roads, a similar gridlock inside our cells may explain why Type 2 diabetes develops, a new study from
Indian Institute of Science
(IISc) has found.
After meals, the body must clear rising blood sugar quickly.
Pancreatic beta cells do this by taking up sugar from the blood and releasing insulin. The entry of sugar is managed by proteins called glucose transporters, which act like gates moving to the cell surface when needed.
Scientists from IISc's department of developmental biology and genetics, led by assistant professor Nikhil Gandasi, discovered that in people with diabetes, this movement slows down — like vehicles stuck in a jam.
Fewer transporters reach the cell surface, blocking sugar entry and weakening the release of insulin.

Using live-cell imaging, the team watched these "gates" in action. In healthy cells, transporters move smoothly in and out, keeping sugar flow steady. In diabetic cells, however, the system falters, causing a molecular traffic jam. "Most studies look at what happens after sugar enters the cell. We focused on the step before that — the entry itself — and saw how it breaks down in diabetes," Anuma Pallavi, PhD student and first author of the paper, said.

The findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, open up new treatment possibilities. Current drugs target insulin's action in muscles and fat. This study suggests improving glucose "traffic flow" in beta cells themselves could help.
Gandasi's team has also tested a plant-based compound, Pheophorbide A, that boosts insulin release by acting on these transporters. "If we can clear these traffic jams inside cells, we may be able to slow disease progression and design more personalised therapies," Gandasi said.

Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, the minister for urban administration, Kailash Vijayvargiya, said, "This is a major achievement of our govt. We required a centre for research and development of electronic manufacturing." The cluster will promote the Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) sector with world-class infrastructure and Common Facility Centres (CFCs). "For the project, 210.21 acres of land were allocated, and approval was granted for a total project cost of Rs 371.95 crore, of which Rs 146.63 crore will come as the central share and Rs 225.32 crore from the state," Vijayvargiya said. A state govt release stated, "The EMC 2.0 scheme will play a key role in realising the vision of Digital India and Make in India, besides providing upgraded technical infrastructure, common facilities, and a strong base for the electronics industry. The govt approved 1,570 posts for these ayurvedic centres. Each division in the state will now have one Ayurvedic Medical College, strengthening Ayurveda-based healthcare and the wellness industry, the minister said. The colleges will be funded under the National AYUSH Mission, with an allocation of Rs 70 crore for each ayurvedic college, totalling Rs 350 crore, to be paid in a 60:40 ratio between the Centre and the state. Each campus will include a college building, a 100-bed hospital, hostels for boys and girls, residential quarters, and a pharmacy building as per prescribed standards. The cabinet approved the establishment of a Department of Endocrinology at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, along with 20 new posts, including one professor, one associate professor, two senior residents, and two junior residents. In yet another decision, the cabinet decided to provide scholarships for 12 months instead of 10 months for mess facilities in tribal hostels operated under the Tribal Welfare Department. The scholarships, based on student attendance, currently stand at Rs 1,650 per month for boys and Rs 1,700 per month for girls. The council of ministers approved the 'Geeta Bhavan' scheme to promote reading, cultural and literary activities, and provide well-equipped study centres in urban local bodies. "Chief Minister Mohan Yadav wants one Geeta Bhavan to be established in every district, which we want to be completed in the next five years," Kailash Vijayvargiya claimed. The scheme will run from 2025-26 to 2029-30. The state govt will provide financial support for the construction, expansion, and maintenance of 'Geeta Bhavans'. On Tuesday, the cabinet decided to complete the liquidation of Morena Division Cooperative Sugar Factory, Kailaras, and transfer its 22.34 hectares of land to the govt. The factory will be handed over to the MSME department for the development of employment-based industries in Morena district. An amount of approximately Rs 61 crore will be provided through the MSME department to settle dues of employees, farmers, and other liabilities. Plant and machinery will be sold through a transparent process by the Department of Public Asset Management, the state govt said. The sugar factory, registered in 1965, remained non-functional due to irrigation issues, a shortage of sugarcane, and managerial reasons, and was closed since 2008-09 with accumulated liabilities of Rs 54.81 crore. NHM employees begin indefinite strike, healthcare services impacted

Pune: Nearly 20,000 of 39,500 National Health Mission (NHM) employees, which include 1,500 from Pune district, began an indefinite strike across Maharashtra on Tuesday over what they called state's failure to implement a govt resolution on regularisation of posts. The strike is organised under the banner of the 'NHM Integration Committee, Maharashtra', with multiple health workers' unions coming together for the first time. Employees from technical and non-technical departments, including maternity wards, neonatal units, ICU, vaccination, and drug distribution boycotted work. The disruption is expected to severely impact public healthcare services across the state. Committee president Vijay Gaikwad in a statement on Tuesday said the GR issued on March 14, 2024, mandated regularisation of contract employees with over 10 years of service. Despite repeated assurances by the authorities, it has not been implemented even after 17 months, he said. State to provide free toilet facilities, clean water to stem health crisis at Cutbona jetty

Margao: State govt has announced immediate measures to address the deteriorating health and sanitation conditions at the Cutbona jetty following reports of serious health issues among workers employed on fishing trawlers. In a high-level meeting convened at the secretariat on Monday, fisheries secretary Prasanna Acharya assured that resolving the health crisis at the Cutbona jetty was govt's priority, and promised comprehensive action to tackle the mounting problems. It was informed that state govt will provide free toilet facilities through Sulabh International at the newly constructed 50-seater toilet block with immediate effect. This measure aims to eliminate open defecation at the jetty, which has been identified as a major health hazard. Arrangements will also be made to supply filtered water for the drinking and cooking requirements of fishing trawler workers to prevent water-borne diseases. Further, it was decided that the state fisheries department will collaborate with the Velim panchayat to ensure regular collection of dry and wet garbage, addressing the waste accumulation problem that has contributed to unsanitary conditions at the jetty. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The meeting also reviewed ongoing health screening programmes for fishing trawler workers to identify any signs of water or vector-borne diseases.
